My 1st Grow :) Suggestions Appreciated

How did my plants get so big with these same lights? I haven't read anywhere that you have to add more lights in flowering period, just switch to 12/12 and they should produce budding.

Just speaking ideals here, but in a 4x4 canopy, dont waste your time with anything under 1000 watts. a 1000 watt hps in a cool tube hood is literally the perfect amount of light for that area. 600 not enough.

my suggestion is pony up the cash and get the 1k HPS. when you master that one light you can get 2 pounds a harvest. roughly 8 pounds a year. At first you will probably get half that, but practice and it will pay off.

but i understand not every one can go that route. my suggestion is make a large reflector out of cardboard and white paint to go over the lights to concentrate the light in there. half your light is going up top.

You are correct they will bloom under the lights that you have now. The only buds that will develop properly will be the ones closest to the lights. The rest will just be fluff that wont amount to anything. Reflectors will help like Hash Zeppelin said. With all of those wires in the way it may be easier to make several smaller reflectors than one big one.

I use cfls in my grow but mine is a micro grow. My grow space Is only 12wx 18d x16 h. I use 6 23w cfls. My grow space is separated from my lights with a sheet of clear acrylic and my containers take up 6 inches of my grow space. So that leaves me 10 inches of space to grow my plants so there is no wasted space.

I made some homemade reflectors and added 4 more lights to the top corners. Plants look to be getting more light now pics below.

hehe that is innovative, holiday spirit there, turkey trays for reflectors, any ways all jokes aside for a first grow your plants look healthy, they are past the jumping stage or just about and now the fun starts for ya, keep us posted.

That looks much better. If I were you I would try to get all of the top growth at the same height. In other words, level out your canopy. You can either raise the shorter plants to the height of the tallest plant or bend the taller pants over to the level of the shortest plant. If it was my grow I would bend the taller plants over that way the branches that are lower on the taller plants will get more light. If you get everything level and even you will get a better yield.

2 plants are 1-1.5 weeks older then the other 3 plants so that is why the lights are at different heights. my next batch I already have vegging in another tent are all the same age and I will top and trim them so they grow all the same height.

I don't have to worry about them breaking? what is best to use to tie them down?

I usually break mine over on purpose. All you have to do is mash the stem between your thumb an finger where you want it to bend . While you are mashing the stem roll the stem about a quarter of a turn. back and forth. until the stem softens. That will keep the stem from snapping off when you bend it over. You may still want to tie it down so that it stays. Don't be afraid to mash hard. you want to crush the stem. This is called supercropping.

Well you do it without em breaking, you can also bend branches to lst just dont break em all the way. Use rope, string whatever ya got. If you can manage to get em all down level somewhat youll be in better shape light wise.

Cloning Time

Cloning Time

I was trying to tie down some branches to even the height of the plants and I broke one of the branches of one plant so I thought I would turn a downer into something positive. I made 5 clones from the one branch but I quickly got a surprise after only 2-3 hours of being in my small tent the plants quickly looked like they were dying. As shown below;

So I guessed that they were getting too much light, couldn't be water because I made sure the soil was very moist. I decided to leave them in my office and within 8-10 hours they looked like they were back to life and healthy as seen below.

I make little trays from the cut out bottom of half gallon milk jugs, and keep a little water in the bottom for when im out of the house so they dont dry out. Your cloning technique is just like mine, right into dirt!
