yes, some level of trust is required to communicate electronically. you apparently trust ic mag, no? all companies have to comply with leo's demands. lavabit's mistake was having unencrypted data on their servers. wickr is different in that regard. they will freely turn over all the data they have. if your messages haven't yet expired, they are still encrypted..

The issue with Lavabit is that the NSA walked in and demanded the keys to the castle complete with a gag order. The owner chose to shut down the service rather than comply. Using a service and/or closed source application for encryption requires trust that the operators will do it correctly, not create a back door, and not cave to secret government demands under threat of federal imprisonment.

If you need trusted encryption one needs to do it themselves with openly reviewed software and protocols at a minimum.

As for trusting icmag, I'm a nobody who knows nobody and hasn't grown in two years. I only lurk and share what little I've learned.
