just a beginner, call me ignorant if ye want but I gotta know what rols stands for,,,,,

Recycled Organic Living Soil? Did I win?

I agree that slapping a new label on this age-old practice is a little silly, but what can ya do? If a little re-branding helps to spark more interest in organic methods, I'm all for it.

I think the real understanding from organics gardening comes from actually doing it and experimenting. nothing gives you insight like a failure. Some of my biggest mistakes became my biggest learning experiences. lessons are infinite. Keep open mind. Pay attention to your garden and your thumbs become green. Just keep on growing regardless of what method you have, it is going to make you grow as a person.plants reflection....

Ironic how a thread about source what you can for free or on the cheap that was meant for the good of all get's so much hate for having becoming the next 'chic name'.

Call it what you want, I find it an easy method to achieve my desired result. Kind of like miracle grow crystals without all the urine smell and salt buildup. Alot like the moonshine mix I progress to from the crystals but instead of buying a bunch of peat and perlite (FF soil) with my 100 dollars I'm re-using the last batch and spending the money on a wide range of once living things to finish doing what they were meant to do...become dirt. For those of you still figuiring it out I don't call it dirt until it is alive.
Like any good pet you must educate yourself on how to raise it properly. I love my pet dirt and it loves me I can tell. :peacock:

Now that I know how to make dirt just try and stop me from growing a plant! :moon:

Fair enough...I did not know that. My ignorance, obviously I now wish I would have been listening to you sooner.
.............. But as a base to start from that mix is bomb in my mind.
FWIW
it was mr coot who I personally first heard of any one, here, explaining how most to all of the base mixes for container gardening on the canna forums are tweaked cornell organic container mixes used by many in the nursery industry.

Cornell Organic Substitute for Classic Mix (as modified by Biernbaum, 2001)
  • ½ cu yd. sphagnum peat
  • ½ cu yd vermiculite
  • 5 lbs ground limestone
  • 2–4 lbs bone meal
  • 5 lbs blood meal
And absolutely CaCO3 is CaCO3...but crab meal brings chitin and some animal protein for a more complete amino profile (combined with the plant protein from Neem meal) along with CaCO3.

That is what I meant about the quality of amendments.
exactly, mr coot shared a lot of quality information about building soil, for example his mineral mix was again a tweaked version of steve solomon mix (that he was very open about) & im confident he also tweaked steves complete fertilizer mix as Solomon was the first big gardening author, I know of, who recommended sourcing seed meals as an alternative to slaughter house by-products.

I also only knew of clack associating with ROL's gurus and followers. don't think he even repd the brand but it sure seems like most associate him with that tag

@ greenheart
dirt? that's weak sauce man
I proudly call my pet SOIL j/k

but on the real, I personally seen that thread get a bit bias & derailed to a tokers den of sort
sourcing for cheap was one thing but guys going out on a whim and buying specific brand sprayers, aloe powder, fresh organic coconuts & dried "organic" herbs on the internet
was waaayyy to deep pocket organics, for me.
kelp isn't a must and kelloggs compost is bio-solids

Darc, if you look at most of the canna mixes that have been posted here and in that rag Hightimes......they are versions of the Cornell mix. But is was cootz who informed us where they all derived from. I grew great buds in peat, vermiculite, perlite cow manure, chicken manure and bone meal......for years. It was many years before I could get any guanos, castings and things in south florida. It was the Home Depot or nothing.

Cootz did bring about the tweaking of things. Especially the lime ´mixes which I now use......no dolomites for me. I now use Microbemans aeration ratios which are far superior so far than the 30% plus recommended by everyone else. Jaykush turned me onto the nettles top dressing and castings slurry long before most of you showed up back in the early days of the OFC.

But cootz is the man when it comes to custom nutrient mixes for sure. I do favor the seed meals which MM does not. I need to ask him why BTW.

As you mentioned before it was Scabeez that introduced the enzymes for growing thing but that was in a time when I was moving back and forth from europe to america and back again.....lol

So I know it is not be spoken of but fuckit... why it cootz banned? He did not do anything but help the organic soil forum and it would not be anywhere close to where it is now if he had never posted here... he was a blessing... and like Darc said... he was cool with the group but never once did I see him talk about ROLS ANYWHERE... he just has deep ties with Gas... after all, they do know each other in real life... sorry if this is not "appropriate"...

FWIW- I always thought "ROLS" was dumb... it's just organic soil... LIVING

Cootz wished to have his account deleted for some reason he could not delete it himself. The mod that banned him could not delete so he did the next best thing and that was to ban. Cootz simply got what he wanted.....to have his account at icmag terminated.

and yes he helped many people including myself which I am indebted to him for that. But in the end I only did that for which he wished or as best as my abilities as a moderator could do for him.

recycling your living soil can take many forms. As i have mentioned in the past you could dump soil into a main vat/bin/can of recycled soil and fill fresh pots from that receptacle/batch but; the ROLS guys advocated the no-till method moreso {as MM has explains: leave the fungal hyphae intact} and w/ this method, you can harvest and transplant w/ no rest period

by no means can it be more economical to throw a mix away and start a new one whether a buck or 2 is the goal or not

anyway, the goal/ideal w/ ROLS is that the soil gets better w/ each cycle

it can be accomplished w/o a batch of soil in progress but does rely on good humus sources particularly as a worm bin

& so did many of the ROL's guru's or are they now all gone? are you "still" growing rols style lol
just busting chops von

I understand why everyone left, as its was no secret to me before I joined, of this sites rep & pretty confident I overstated the frustration some had with getting a message across.

gas and coot were entertaining, like many stated, all was & is ther in the OFC thread but gas could woo the bud porn junkies, commercial scale growers & clack man coot could kill it with the details for the organic purist, plus heat things up with smart ass remarks.
many :beat-dead discussions & topics became the past or easily moved along and the main matured for a bit, imo I felt that's what gas ALS group objective was

the threads they started and contributed too got the most hits, longest detailed discussions and amusing debates.
haters of ROL's & gurus cant deny, they earned ther keeps
considering ROLs, can we call him. founder;felt of being treated like a " red headed bastard step-child " here

this of course gave rize to some pretty bias favoritism among these boards, that im confident those favored were aware of.
this was till all lost respect for this site & took off. I would of done this long ago when jays OFC was threatened :angrymod: specially if my mentors & good friends did.

yep I still grow rols.......more along the Uncle Ms style but none the less rols. Soil building ......what my goal has always been even when it was in the OFC. Now my life is more stable it will be easier for me to do.

I have been here so long now I have seen many come and many go. It is just the way of things. Mostly after gaining popularity and deeming themselves above and beyond for one reason or another believing they were responsible for generating a large amount of revenue for the site. Little do they know that is not how the site runs or how many sites run.

I will remain as I always have and help those who wish to learn what little I have to offer. lol I myself learn each and every day from all of the posters here as I always have.

Soma's won a few!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought his genetics won...I thought the weed entered was his genetics grown by someone else.i hear he's not as proficient a grower with the flowers as he is with the seeds.

you're right DARC, gas did attract a lot of people to his threads and won over some people to those methods - that cant be denied.

imo he knew the simple formula to attract the attention and respect of the average grower - pictures of happy, well grown plants.
Even if you grow in a shoe box like myself lol people will always take notice of some half decent pictures, i'm constantly surprised and flattered by the respect i get for my diaries and how many peeps say they have been influenced by the way i grow.
In the BS world of the internet a picture can speak a thousand words - anyone can say anything about what they've done and how great it was but in most cases, most people will be more convinced by a picture and fewer words. Im not saying its right or wrong - its just the way it is.
Von knows this too and he's rocking his thread by posting up great looking plants.

Pet soil! Think we could market that like the pet rock of the 70s? lol

I like my pet worms also. They eat better than me most days.

I will just say it. If it weren't for Tom Hill's big plant thread I would be gone from this site also. I am a commercial grower with a preference for ROLS style. I have nothing but respect for Cootz and Gas. I have zero respect for this site itself.

More people don't grow ROLS because of all of the bullshit associated with it period. And this site is the problem...not the answer.
