Blues Music!

Who else here is a fan?

Of course I'm a fan of the classic bluesmen who've now passed on, everyone from Robert Johnson, Pink Anderson, Floyd Council, Honeyboy Edwards, etc., to Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Albert King, Albert Collins, all of whom are now dead.

But I've also seen some amazing blues artists who are still alive -- last month, Buddy Guy handed me a guitar pick! I was front row, center stage at a show of his.

Saw Buddy last year too, as well as Eric Clapton. Going to see Taj Mahal soon, as well as Jimmie Vaughan (brother of Stevie Ray Vaughan), and B.B. King.

So, who else loves blues music?

Buddy is still doing his thing, saw him a couple years ago. That's sweet he handed you a guitar pick. Saw Jimmy Vaughan a couple years ago opening for Dylan, he played great that night.

Love the old timers, mostly. Son House, Blind Lemon, Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Willie Johnson, Sleepy John Estes, Howlin Wolf, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Charlie Patton. Then there's the Alan Lomax collections. I can go on for days so I'll stop now. You can find new world's listening to some of this stuff. Takes you away.

:tiphat:

So glad to see we have some blues enthusiasts here! Sad to say that Pinetop Perkins passed away back in March, and Honeyboy Edwards died last month.

Cool that Jimmy opened for Dylan -- saw him early last month, one night before seeing Paul McCartney. An epic weekend.

Snagglepuss -- great YouTube posts!

Met Junior Wells & Buddy Guy together back in '79-80 backstage at La Casa de La Raza in Santa Barbara. Buddy Guy shook my hand, Junior seemed cranky and wouldn't. After an intermission Buddy came out and stated he was getting high backstage and said "Now I wanna show you how high I got" and proceeded to give an amazing, amazing solo!

Awesome that you got to meet him. He spoke directly to me twice.

First time, he was trying to get the crowd to sing along to a "Hoochie Coochie Man" cover, and says, "I was in India two weeks ago singing this song, and they did somethin' y'all didn't do."

I yell out, "They didn't fuck it up!" and he says, "That's right -- they didn't fuck it up," and 3,000 people crack up laughing.

Second time, I yell out, "Play 'Strange Brew'" and he says, "I'm gonna get to it," just smiling. He didn't sound aggravated or annoyed -- just kind of like an old man telling this young guy, "Relax, I'll take care of ya."

Buddy rules.

Love the blues, long overdue thread.

here's a kickass book I had the joy of reading

http://www.amazon.com/Land-Where-Blues-Began/dp/0385312857

"From Publishers Weekly
Working for the Library of Congress and other cultural institutions, legendary roots-music connoisseur Lomax ( Mister Jelly Roll ) visited the Mississippi Delta with his father, folklorist John Lomax, and black folklorist Zora Neale Hurston in the 1930s; with African American sociologists from Fiske University in the 1940s; and with a PBS film crew in the 1980s, researching the history of the blues in America. Addressing this wonderfully rich vein of scarcely acknowledged Americana, Lomax has written a marvelous appreciation of a region, its people and their music. Burdened early with now long-forgotten technology (500-pound recording machines, etc.) and encountering pronounced racial biases and cultural suspicions about black and white people mixing socially and otherwise, Lomax sought out those in the Delta who knew Robert Johnson and Charlie Patton and others acquainted with musicians once less well known, such as Doc Reese, young McKinley Morganfield (Muddy Waters), Dave Edwards, Eugene Powell and Sam Chatmon. Traveling across the South "from the Brazos bottoms of Texas to the tidewater country of Virginia," Lomax discovers the plantations, levee camps, prisons and railroad yards where the men and women of the blues came from and the music was born. In a memoir that will take its place as an American classic, Lomax records not just his recollections but the voices of hard-working, frequently hard-drinking, spiritual people that otherwise might have been lost to readers."

I think we still do blues mondays in chat. or maybe its tuesday......

Just got back sitting in with a friend's blues band at a famous dive blues bar somewhere in Dixie. When I left - get this - Dennis Quaid was singing with the band. Elizabeth Banks was there, too. Very cool. Too bad I gotta work tomorrow. :dance013:

Underated and forgotton musicians. One such person is blues guitarist Shuggie Otis.Due to poor marketing and other factors, this
amazing musician never made it big.

Of spanish decent ,Shuggie was the son of band leader and tv personality Johnny Otis ,who used to have the Johnny otis show.
I got lucky one day when i found his record "Here comes Shuggie Otis" at a used record store.Recorded when he was 14 yrs old

Since then he has become one of the greatest blues guitarists i have ever heard .Unfortunatly missed the big time. His song strawberry letter 23 ,was a super huge hit when later in the 70's it was done by the Brothers Johnson. In fact their whole sound and many of their songs are based off of Shuggies sound.

A truly gifted artist who never got his due.His song Jenny Lee is
one of my favorite songs ever ,top 5 .Its great that music is tangeable ,and will be around forever .So not to miss ,something you may never have heard of....

I love blues music. Is so raw and powerful. It's the seed that grew up to be rock and roll. Buddy guy is still at it as well as Matt Guitar Murphy. If you want to hear a phenomenal blues album that most people forget is Layla and other assorted love songs by Derek and the Dominos. Their version of key to the highway is epic as fuck. I just got my Les Paul back from having the frets polished. Think I'm gonna plug it in and jam!

Hey friends, I know I come in here to brag often, but earlier this week I saw Jimmie Vaughan in concert! Small venue, and I was front and center. Gotta love general admission. Phenomenal show, too -- he played for a solid 2+ hours.

I ran BB.Kings Bluesville and the #70 of Sirius on my dirt modified last season. I people should name some hybrids after some blues legends. Hey roll up some more HOOKER! The Bluesfest was incredible!!!! Walter Trout closed the second night. In my opinion Janiva Magnus had the best show of the two day event. There wasn't a bad show the whole weekend. Fargo we can't wait to come back next year. Thanks for some great BLUES.........

Just checked on the girls. One is a little on the slender side but the longer she is flowering I'm sure she will put on some weight. The other 3 are very robust Hawaiian sweeties. It sure is fun spoiling the four of them with a lot of affection. They seem to be big BLUES fans also. Is anyone going to any late season shows or outdoor fests? Have a beautiful weekend!
