Smell is often a good tell, but I have come across absolutely amazing sativas that had very little odor and I have run across some truly stinky indica style berry/skunk scented bud that really wasn't very good at all. I guess the later is probably just my dislike of indica effects, rather than the bud actually being of poor quality.

Still, even the old sniff test can throw me off at times although I trust it more than my eyes. I find the types of aromas are more important than the strength of them.

For instance if the bud smells like old leather, woody incense, lemon cleaner or peppery spices it will immediately get my attention even if it doesn't stink up the place since it is cannabis with these sorts of odors that works best for the medical problems I have. (Neurological and GI problems.)

i'm easily swayed by pretty things - anything unusual does have some influence even if it doesnt signify special qualities...

around here things are kinda backwards, i have fluffy strains that frost up like crazy, with unusual flavors, but people seem to prefer the denser, less frosty pot, with the basic skunk smell. It's just what people are used too around here, street weed is kinda meh, and sure, a lot of people go nuts over the good stuff, there are some people that actually seem skeptical! on average i think people here just want their pot to look like the normal street weed they buy every week, which really isn't that great, or at least they are willing to pay the same 60 a dub for a strain that yields 3 times more than most super frosty ones...makes the decision kinda easy, and frankly, it's probably not super smart to stand out in a non med state, i could be totally wrong, but if i started sending out chem ibl or wifi fully cured i would think the cops would start to notice it when they bust people with it, and maybe even try to look into where it's coming from.

of course the economics of it are totally different in legal and med states vs illegal states. i must say it would be interesting to have to compete with other growers for the best crops, to ensure a good price, here i could grow whatever i please and it would sell like hotcakes!

It's not the most critical factor, but with a discerning eye.. bag appeal can tell a lot. Appearance, aroma.. it's a considerable factor.

Bag appeal ??? How about grower appeal? I would rather have it look poor and not be nuked myself. I think if you take the time to do it right. [organic] IMO.... You will have Bag, Mind and superb quality. That appeals to me. Earthworms, natures answer to nukes. PEACE

how i rate buds
1. effect
2. flavor/taste
3. price
4. smell
5. looks

usually dont "buy" weed since grower...but thats how i rate da kine

well, must admit it is important for me, because in a lot of situations its the only judgement you have BEFORE smoking it of course. and i think it has a mental effect on you as well, but badlooking weed surprises me more than goodlooking weed disappoints me :D or am I high?

What does bag appeal mean? Are we talking the frostiness? Density/dryness of nugs? Manicuring/trim? Smells/flavors? Looks/colors? Even the name of a strain could affect the 'bag appeal' to some smokers.

There are so many aspects that people find appealing in cannabis, it seems difficult to narrow down what aspects are appealing to different people.

All but the smell/flavors part. Peace GS

When people talk about bag appeal they are usually just referring to how it looks and smells at first glance. It includes all the traits you can spot just by picking up a bag, looking at it and taking a whiff. Generally people refer to large, frosty dense buds as having good bag appeal although all of the things you mentioned could be considered aspects of bag appeal. As you mentioned it does tend to be somewhat subjective but in general the traits I mentioned above are what most people find appealing.

An example of poor bag appeal would be basically any land race sativa where the bud is thin and looks like ditch weed and it often doesn't smell like the typical generic street hybrids. It doesn't matter how absolutely godly that bud might be, many people would simply rather have a bag of something half as good that looked and smelled pretty.

Bag appeal doesn't mean much to me personally . the smoking & tasting after i see it is what matters to me . its my wallet where bag appeal comes into play . if it looks & smells good in the bag .... people are all over it !!!

Outdoor>indoor as far effect.
Indoor>outdoor as far as looks.
Smell is equal
However most people in Cali will immediately discriminate based on a visual inspection and trim job. Before they even open it up and take a whiff.

Weed with great bag appeal will end up being a great smoke much more often than the other way around.

That varies on what sort of strains you like. I don't like indicas for instance, and indicas as a general rule tend to have very good bag appeal where as sativas do not. For me, big dense sticky bud with "great" bag appeal is more often than not a let down since it ends up having an effect which I dislike.

definatley is a nice sight to see light green nugs covered in crystals.

Greetings,

Smoke before you judge, culture is learned diatribe:

I have been smoking for almost 45 years. When I was growing up, all the weed was pressed, leafy, and cured to a brown, red, or gold color. It was almost all imported, and quality and potency of the high varied widely. People were trying to grow their own and it was usually green from over fertilization, not being cured, not ripened enough, and barely got you high.

I moved to California, where people had the climate, their growing skills honed, and people used the term "green bud" to describe the good weed. I thought they had their heads up their asses. Turns out, some of that green bud was killer. I still think most growers haven't learned how to cure their product well yet.

Those photographs from Red Rider with that Columbian Punto Rojo, Purple Highland, and Gold literally make me drool. That shit is not schwagg, it is some of the finest weed in the world. California used to have weed like that in the 70s and 80s, but is becoming more rare due to the indica invasion which has sacrificed quality and potency for early flowering and bag appeal.

To be fair, there are still some connoisseurs of fine quality and potent herb, and the cure has become more important to them and even to the new indica smokers/growers. But they are paddling against the newbie tide. The really bad quality weed is mostly gone, so the average quality is probably higher than when I was young. But the top shelf weed is mostly gone also. I'm not sure I would make that trade if I had a say in it, because the super fine top shelf weed, like the Colombian Punto Rojo, Thai Stick, Oaxacan, Jamaican Ganja, and Colombian Gold each with their unique highs were really something to behold.

Would you turn down this weed because I didn't fertilize it enough, the buds are small, and it is not green:

Smoke it before you judge,

ThaiBliss

P.S. I like an Indica on occasion, but I think it is a travesty to cross a fine quality sativa with it. 98% of the time, it screws up the sativa high, and puts me to sleep. The other 2% gets hoarded out of existence. The newbies now don't know better. Culture is learned.
