Dr. Sanjay Gupta is apologizing for "misleading" the American public on weed.

CNN's chief medical correspondent, whose documentary Weed airs on CNN this Sunday, said he was wrong about the effects of the drug.

"I have apologized for some of the earlier reporting because I think, you know, we've been terribly and systematically misled in this country for some time," Gupta told Piers Morgan on CNN Wednesday night. "And I did part of that misleading."

Gupta has spoken out against the use of medical marijuana in the past, including penning a TIME magazine article in 2009 titled, Why I would Vote No on Pot.

In an op-ed that appeared on CNN's website Thursday, Why I Changed My Mind On Weed, Gupta said he had mistakenly believed the Drug Enforcement Agency had sound scientific proof when it placed marijuana in the category of the most dangerous drugs.

"I apologize because I didn't look hard enough, until now. I didn't look far enough. I didn't review papers from smaller labs in other countries doing some remarkable research, and I was too dismissive of the loud chorus of legitimate patients whose symptoms improved on cannabis.
Instead, I lumped them with the high-visibility malingerers, just looking to get high. I mistakenly believed the Drug Enforcement Agency listed marijuana as a schedule 1 substance because of sound scientific proof. Surely, they must have quality reasoning as to why marijuana is in the category of the most dangerous drugs that have "no accepted medicinal use and a high potential for abuse."
Gupta says he hopes his upcoming documentary will help set the record straight on medical marijuana.

It's good to see more doctors and scientists come out in favor of the truth. Anyone who takes an objective look at the facts will see that marijuana shouldn't be a schedule 1 drug.

All I know is I'm a peace loving man...but the old anti-pot guy they had on there needs a punch in the face

Addictive...come on...
You don't see anyone sucking cock for weed...
Crack....
Meth....
Heroin...
Yes
Weed..
NO

It's bittersweet isn't it?

On one hand the tide is turning and that means less decent folks getting molested/raped/tortured in US prisons over weed. Good.

On the other hand, is there a single member here who doesn't know a good enough person who had their life ruined because guys like Dr. Gupta peddled his anti-drug shit for years and years?

It's good but at the same time it's like...fuck him, fuck his make-believe newfound rediscovery (I don't believe his "oh I just happened to stumble upon all this data now") bullshit for a second, something changed financially for him).

At least he's pro-pot now...not many people have the balls to go back and do a 180, even if he is getting paid. I'd smoke a doob with him. :)

Yeah, I was so pissed off at Gupta's towing Big Pharma's banner behind him every time he'd be on. He really is being misled by them as well, but he still hasn't realized it.

No doubt there are others around him (even on CNN) that have taken issue with his stand on marijuana.

He represents a prevailing attitude towards cannabis by most in the medical profession. It's not just the DEA that has them hoodwinked, it's Big Pharma, the tobacco and alcohol lobbies and the Conservatives in government as well.

Every doctor should understand the benefits of "harm reduction" that marijuana provides as opposed to tobacco, alcohol and pharmaceuticals. That alone is reason enough to PRESCRIBE IT (not just recommend it!)

Let's hope Dr. Gupta's huge Public Pulpit will enable him to turn around the heads of many others in the medical field who cling to the Gov't propaganda and fear mongering.

The time is now, for we have now reached the top of the hill. The media is coming around. It's now downhill for the legalization fight! We're gonna WIN!

Perhaps Mr Gupta would atone for his mistakes by GETTING INVOLVED with financial donations and life-support on television?

It really does seem so. I remember feeling the law change was going to happen back when I was in my early 20's back in the late 70's, but then...WHAM...all of a sudden shit just reversed itself. We are much farther along now, though, and when you see people like Gupta reversing course it certainly does suggest something big is about to happen.

Feeling very encouraged! But still keeping my fingers crossed!

i'd be my house that if someone hired a private accounting investigator into "dr" gupta we'd see that someone in big pharma stopped breaking out that long paper sometime around last year.

this guy is a harvard educated physician, a brilliant man who is as media/government savvy as a physican can be...and it just bit him in the dick- now- that the dea/fda et al is completely full of shit?

If you were to ask the average dumb american on the street why the dea schedules marijuana w/ the same classification as heroin they would tell u exactly why. EVERYONE- even dumb people- know whats going on w/ weed.

And this all just magically dawned upon dr gupta at a time that coincides w/ us working the kinks out of the dispensary system/big business warming up to marijuana?

I've seen too many poor/working class/unconnected taxpayers have their lives ruined to feel joy that this guy changed his allegiance to our side.

Eat a dick, doc. A big veiny one w/ smegma.

This. Doctors have entered the wealth stream .In the UK the NHS (National Health Service) is no longer a compassionate help the underclass system, its a systemic abuse of working class people by middle class doctors and managers who feed and benefit enormously by prescribing 'Big Pharma ' drugs and addict vulnerable people daily.

Whatever his motives, it's good to see a prominent doctor and journalist publicly apologize and change his position on marijuana. Mainstream America will see his new pro-weed documentary on CNN. He's in a position to change a lot of minds about the issue. The more people we have on our side, the closer we get to legalization.
