HPS and MH together

Please forgive what sounds like a stupid question !
I am using both HPS and a MH 400 watts together for flowering.

Will the MH cause a problem ? They seem to be taking longer than normal to show me there girly parts.

Sorry for the waste of space

it could be the strain, multiple spectrum is the way to go IMO.The last 3 weeks i do remove the MH ,no particular reason though

You'll be fine, just like you'd be fine vegging with HPS, your plants will do better the first 4-5 weeks under the hps in flower then the plants will start doing better under the mh the last few weeks. I had a perpetual goin that had an mh for plants in last 2/3 weeks, they developed extra frost once they finished under the mh in my experience.

Ive read the mh for extra resin production ,But I've also read the downfall to this practice is Buds tend to be more "airy"I dont know how much is fact but the last 2 weeks is when they pack on weight .Personally i want denser buds vs airy

perhaps more radiant heat causing the buds to open up ?? MH are hott !!

I think its somthing more on the lines of the blue spectrum .The plant is tricked so it causes extra resin production as a natural defense,Instead of putting its energy into packing on weight

No matter what the spectrum I think more light is better. If you had two HPS that might be better for yield and density but an HPS + MH is better than just an HPS if your adding watts no matter what your beliefs on spectrum are.

Having said that, I run a dual spectrum 1000w bulb from Hortilux that has a 600w Super HPS and a 400w Blue MH in the same bulb. Definitely less stretch, more resin, but do think I may lose some yeild compared to a strait 1000w Super HPS.

Healthy blessings br0ther Moth. Just wanted to chime in and let you know that I run 400HPS with 400MH in bloom. Also, I transfer a few select plants from veg to bloom during lights on and back again at lights off, on a daily basis.

The more light, the better, use what you have. Do you rotate plants so they are under both lights or do some stay more centered under one than the other? I have a ancient, ( 17 yrs now) 430 son agro, and hope that I get the best of both worlds.

I recently had a hps go out and had no choice but to replace it with my MH. Still solid nugs with extra resin.

I use an even mix of 1000 watt sodiums and halides in both veg and flower.
My favorite halide bulb is the 39 dollar plantmax 7200K.
It's spectrum has a lot of red in it and has nearly the lumens of a hps.
Cheap too.

like i said I dont know how much is fact, but this i do know
CFL veg,ok/bloom, not any where near HID mh or hps
mh -veg ,better/bloom, good
hps -veg ,good/bloom,better
hps/mh- veg/best, bloom/best

Interesting breakdown. I run MH through veg, up until blossoms start in flower (10-14 days) then switch to dual arc bulbs for the rest of flower. It would be interesting to do some comparison runs with the dual arc bulbs from start to finish. That is an experiment i've been meaning to do, but haven't gotten to yet.

What kind of Dual Arc bulb u using?

There's one at the hydro store that is a Lumatek i think and its a Dual Arc both HPS & MH in one 1000watt bulb...
Everythings included. The reflecter, the bulb, the yo-yo hangers, cords, the glass bottom cover for the reflecter and a Lumatek ballast that runs at 500watt, 700watt, 1000watt and super lumens witch is like an extra 10% i think ...all for 500. oo something ...
I'm almost sure its a Lumatek ...

Anyway, i was thinkin about grabbin it. I've just never seen a bulb like that. Wondering if i should get that or just a regular 1000watt bulb ...

I'm running 2 - 1000 watt Ultra Sun Dual Arcs. They were relatively inexpensive and so far seem to be doing the trick. I know another lower cost one is made by Plantmax (Ultragrow MegaLux), but i have no experience with that product.

As far as which route you "should" take, there are arguments on both sides of the fence. I'm more interested in spectrum at this point, but obviously straight 1000 watt MH and HPS has proven to work well historically also. Experience is everything. Run it one way now and try the other later. Choose based on your own ideals and situation.

Most importantly: enjoy the journey to enLIGHTenment! :dance013:
