insulated ducting works wonders and put your fan inside a box or rubbermade with holes cut for the ducting and fill around it with egg crate foam. kills almost all noise

And using over sized insulated ducting is even better...allows the air to move more freely with less restriction.

Also,a duct muffler at the end of your duct run will lessen the sound of air wooshing out of the ducting...some growers use a duct muffler directly before the intake side of the fan as well.

i made my own duct muffler by taking the long box i got my acoustic ducting in, cutting a 5 inch circular hole in either end, and cutting up some old pillows and pva glued it to the sides of the inside of the box then duct taped this onto the end of my ducting. took it down a few decibles! i will post a how to soon. Also use loft insulation to wrap round anything u want to sound insulate any more and tape up with black bin bags to stop the itchy dust getting every where!

If you're legal, fuckem... but yes mufflers work, insulated ducting works, insulated box around the fan works etc. What kind of fan/filter we talking about here though?

The only solution I know of for your noisy ballasts is to replace them with electronic ballasts. They're silent. Good luck. -granger

If you're legal, fuckem...

I don't know if I like that logic. Just because you're legal doesn't mean you should be a bad neighbor if it can be avoided. Why piss your neighbors off if you can reasonably prevent it. If it was your bedroom on the other side, would you give a shit if your neighbors grow was legal, or would you just want to be able to sleep at night without all the noise?

As mentioned above, insulated ducting worked great for me. Try to keep your duct runs as straight as possible too, the more bends the more noise. You can also noise insulate the fan itself. The yellow-colored squishable foam stuff works great. You can pick up a good sized roll at walmart in the bed section. They sell it as an extra cushion for putting on crappy beds.

I was mostly joking... that's why I didn't stop there.

I live in a condo so I know more than I'de like about sharing walls... after finally becoming legal in February though noise is my least concern. Now odor that's something that keeps me up nights, even now.
