The Next LED Rage: Quality White LED Tubes

Couple of notes

I have been re-experimenting with magnets. 3 powerful donut shape mags, one half again as big as the other 2, so it is in the middle.

Mags are placed in repulse, as close as I can get them. This creates a powerful energy vortex. The clone on the right has had them around the base for several weeks. It is easily 2xs as full

Coming down the home stretch (~ 10 days)

Changed nutes lowered ppm to ~ 510 will cut that in half in 5 days

I changed nutes Thursday pH was ~ 6.1 for both rezes

Today #1 pH (the one that had been without mags was dropping 4-5 points) but now with magnets, the pH was 5.9

It sure seems like the mags are destabilizing pH swings, somehow neutralizing the waste acidity entering the rez

I responded to a thread asking about 8 bulb Quantum Bad Boy (which I have in my other tent), offering the following 411...

Life expectancy of 54w bulbs We know that 600+ nms is essential to max budding. The problem is red phosphors do not last as long as blue (450-500), but LED diodes will last many times longer than cfl.

I do not have a way to measure spectral output, but i doubt there will be much value after the 4th flowering cycle @ 12 hours per day. Factoring in taxes and shipping exotic HOT5 aquarium bulbs cost me ~ $30 per

I paid $35 per 18w LED tube + shipping. Believe me 18w led gives 54w HOT5 a run for it's money. Why? Well HOT5 distributes homogenous light in 360*s, hence the need for reflectors. There has to be some loss. If it's ~30%, a new bulb provides ~ 35 watts to the canopy. However, LED tubes light 100% of their wattage straight down in ~ 120* coverage. By the 2nd or 3rd HOT5 grow, due to loss the comparison is ~ even, and by the 4th grow LED tubes should outperform the HOT5s.

~60 Days in flower

~60 Days in flower

I will qualify this: although I flipped to 12/12 on 6/6, I did not add the 80w of led tubes until 6/19-20. also I work my way down to 10/14 for Indica dom hybrids

Keep in mind total watts is ~ 110

They have gotten ~ 50% fatter in the last week

Clone #1 supplemented with ufo most of her weight is below the main cola, and unfortunately cut off the right side of the pic

Clone #2 is a beast. cola with liter bottle is ~ 12" below the canopy

Maybe another 5 days before harvest

Alas, my camera does not do Macro and is having issues locking in with auto-focus since the camera fell about 2 ft

Trics are clear (mine never seem to turn amber, no matter how long I wait)- I have a jeweler's loop

I can try using a magnifier as a pseudo macro, no guarantees

You can double click the pics to enlarge, but it's only a tric tease

I started a new thread. Looks like I will be beta testing a bonafied commercial LED fixture, so no HOT5s this grow.

Can't tell you whose yet, but I have followed them for a couple years and they understand the tech and what our beloved mmj
needs:woohoo:

I guess I will wait for the big Home improvement stores to stock 4 ft tube LED's that will fit in my T54HO fixtures. Heck I would like to see some that fit a T8 fixture.

The majority of LED tubes are T8/12, not T5 although those are surfacing too. Fun times:woohoo:

Without posting new pics, I am in flush mode. I have extra buckets, so I move the plant (complete with net pot lid) to a bucket outside the tent

Let me tell you, these babies have fattened up a ton in the last 10 days. If they weren't within days I would need a trellis to support the weight. They could snap at any time

It seems that 110w LEDs just takes a little longer to finish
: 160-200+ leds might cut the finish time down closer to that of a 324w HOT5 or 400-600w hps

Not all 4ft tubes have the same wattage- anywhere from 16-20w also CRI, lumens etc are key to separating an average tube from a top quality tube

The dif between 16 and 20w is ~ 20%!

So what you are getting out of the 4 foot LED tubes in T8 fixtures is comparable to what a T54HO puts out? This would save me some watts but I would need a real increase in usable light to change. Still I would be willing to experiment.

when I account for 110w v 324w, yes

Colas are so heavy the stems are about to snap

A while back I was drawn into trying T5 tubes and like them. Now looking at the alibaba site I would like to try them also. I found a 28 watt T8 bulb LED. When I get time I will study the rather intense site more carefully. On another site it says there is an external power source and on the mentioned site it seems the tubes fit right in T8 fixtures. Pricing on the alibaba site is tenuous at best. Hmmmmm. Minimum order 50 bulbs?

28w is probably 5ft, so check sizes 4ft= 1200mm

There is no industry standard, some tubes have internal drivers, others external. With the internal you probably need to replace the whole board. I have no idea which is cheaper

hey assuming the ballast is included in the tube, what do you use to hold it?

The led strip is relatively thin. It slides into a slot on the half circle heat sink, leaving ample room for the driver board to slide in behind it. That end cap screws in/out for replacement.

I would rather have outboard, in the event a driver dies, you don't have to disturb your plants to remove the tube.

Clone Update

The moon has been full for 2 nights, this morning's flush reduced @ ~ 140ppm, which is PHS (Pink Himalayan Salt). will harvest in 2-3 more days.

Timing is perfect, as the new seedlings are ready for more light

It does appear that Clone #1 main cola (she has been getting the ufo 90) has a bigger diameter than Clone 2.

Clones are far from identical: clone 2 has a vg main cola, and way fatter side branches
