Coco Hempy style.

I'm currently running hempy buckets with coco and have been thinking about switching over to coco with blumat drippers. Can anyone agree that hempy buckets will have superior growth rates over coco with droppers?

Hempy buckets can be used with drippers. I posted a link to some awesome drippers that would work with this system a few pages back. Just make sure you are getting run off and re-oxygenating your plants daily.

Puffley .... i'm not tryin to be a wise ass , but that question has been answered in the thread on the first page or first couple of pages . go back and read the thread . its all there dude .

Did some reading and found my info on page 4 or 5. I did a search for perlite in the thread but it doesn't show up for some reason. I read the whole thread about half a year ago. I just have bad memories.

Those halo drippers are nice but too pricey for me. I would need too many of those. I have actually thought about purchasing some a few months ago. But instead, I just made a simple watering system with a pump connected to a manifold with drip lines. A few pages ago you said hempy buckets with coco will out perform smart pots with coco? Do you really think so? If so I'm going to scrap the idea of smart pots with coco. I'm already doing coco hempys right now.

I fed them every other day in veg & they still exploded to 18" plants in a months time !!!
K+ Dan. I don't grow anymore myself but I just tag along with a mate and his hempy bucket findings are this.

Early Stage of Veg
If xplanting from clone to 2g bucket, feed just a small amount daily until roots hit rez, more or less a week.

Mid Veg
Water til run off every 2 - 3 days, more frequently in higher temps. We got a pretty nice summer so far this year.

Late veg - start of flush
Water til run off when the plants tell you, which can be every 1 - 2 days, again, depending on room temps.

Flush
Water til run off almost daily for around 10 - 14 days with just plain ph'd water, then don't water for a couple of days, then harvest.

Basically you got to do what the plants tell you and all strains are different. The above is just his rough guide.

Absolutely, Hempys with coco will outperform smart pots by a mile. I have tried every type pot, and Hempys blow them all away. Two gallon buckets from Home Depot cost only a couple dollars each. Remove the handles, and you are all set. Two gallons is all you need. I have grown them in 5 gallons also, but the two gallon pots watered EVERY day until runoff beat the 5 gallon buckets watered every 2 or 3 days by a mile. I had 7 foot plants in 2 gallon buckets. Had to be careful of tipping. Had them all tied up. A couple of plants were almost a pound each. Smallest was 8 ounces. This was with a two month veg, though. A one month veg will bring those numbers down, obviously.
I didn't think the Halo drippers were that costly considering the benefits, and the fact that each one has over 50 drip holes for even distribution of the water. For a 2 gallon bucket, you would only need the small ones, but to each his own. Those were the best one I could find, and they have great reviews from users. I first saw them in High Times.

You can feed them every other day and get great results, but if you want maximum results, feed every day. It's the fresh oxygen that does it. I have done it every which way, but got best results with daily watering/oxygenation. It's a true hydro medium. The more you water/feed, the better. Of course, some folks don't want to be bothered watering daily and I can understand that, especially if you have large numbers of plants, and if final yield is not that important to you.

Do Hempy buckets with coco, out perform straight coco with a bit of perlite? I am growing some pretty amazing plants in coco and perlite, and I only want to switch to hemp if the difference is significant.

Hempy buckets outperform any other kind of container for coco.

hi retro, nice piece of advice. can you please elaborate a bit on oxygenation though. i was convinced that roots get oxygen between the waterings in case of coco hemy? because then the medium dries a little and this is the source of ox?
how does feeding help oxygenation then?
thx for your helping hand in this subject :tiphat:

Thanks for all the info. Have you had those drip rings clog up yet? What kind of nutes are you using? I'm thinking about getting those as they have them at the hydro store and I need to return some stuff. Do you use ball valves to control the water flow to each one?

Its true that roots get oxygenated from drying out but you will also be giving the roots oxygen by watering because water has oxygen in it and also because as water goes through the coco, it draws in more air as well.

Guys ..... all this talk about how coco can be fed daily or multiple times is in fact true . thats what makes coco a great DTW medium for explosive growth .

BUT .... lets not forget the reason Dialahempy himself invented the Hempy bucket ...... the hempy was designed so that you DON'T have to feed everyday .... instead you can feed every 3 or 4 days BECAUSE of the rez in the bucket . so people can get away for a couple days or if you can't get to your garden everyday etc ......

with the switch over from perlite & vermiculite to coco in the buckets ..... hempy found he could get better yields (of course ) . but sense that point ...... everybody has been trying to reinvent the wheel by adding this or doing it that way ... whatever . even myself ..... I auto feed my coco hempys everyday till runoff . & this changes the hempy into an autopot ..... not a hempy bucket .

I felt this needed to be said because of all the recent talk in here about coco & how it can be fed . which is fine ..... but its not a hempy once its automated or fed daily . it is DTW drip to waste . theres just a rez in the bucket instead of drainage holes in the bottom . which is just adding a benefit to the standard DTW system .

just my 2 cents :)

Right. Fresh water has fresh oxygen, and it pushes out water in the rez whose oxygen has already been used. Also, trial & error validates this point. I have seen the results and can plainly see that daily watering outperforms watering every other or every third day. You are basically replenishing the rez just as a classical hydro system does.

Retro: Could you share what Nutes you are using? I have some Ionic brand nutes laying around and am wondering if I can use those nutrients with coco. The Ionic nutes work for my perlite/vermiculite Hempys because they are hydro nutes, but want to switch to all coco Hempys. Thanks for the help

I use K.I.S.S.=Maxibloom, + rhizotonic, and I add silicon and a bit of Florolicious+ once in a while. Coco is a hydro medium, so you can use any hydro nutes, or even any "regular" nutes. Used to use Canna nutes, but they are expensive and require mixing, and I find Maxibloom to be easier and more effective. PPMS=800, no more. I think most peeps over feed their plants. Over 800 PPM not necessary, IMO. Rhizotonic very important in the beginning of any coco grow. Makes a big difference. And I use a bloom booster in flower, Bloombastic. I also use aspirin to boost plants immune system. 325 Mg. per gallon, or one plain aspirin tablet.
You could use just Maxibloom and get excellent results.

Hempys are a very simple and forgiving method. You can water them any way you prefer, but if you want optimum results, daily replenishment of the solution with fresh oxygen gives bigger yields. There is no doubt about this in my mind. Try a side by side and you will see a difference. Some folks prefer to water every second or third day for convenience, and that is fine, but you will not get the same yield as daily replenishment of the rez. A Hempy bucket is a Hempy bucket no matter how many times you feed/water. Still the same system, still the same bucket. Just a fresh rez daily.

I guess we're going to see this differently . but i'll bet if you ask hempy himself , he's say the idea behind the hempy bucket was so you didn't have to feed everyday ..... & that by doing so , your creating a DTW system .

You don't HAVE to feed every day. That's your choice. The idea behind Hempy buckets is to have a simple passive hydro system with no pumps or tubing.

Hempy on roids! The way I see it is ebb n flow is ebb n flow, doesn't matter if you feed 5 times a day or feed continuously. Quick question, is passive hydro and dtw basically the same thing?

Retro is correct. Feeding everyday in coco-whether it be a Hempy bucket is the best way to maximize your growth. The growth in coco is unbelievable that way
