Recommended. Lake Tahoe area, if SF is gonna be your base. Maybe Yosemite.

Santa Cruz is beautiful but crowded, and difficult to navigate for the first time visitor.

Monterrey very costly, and not a whole lot to do, really. Aquarium is cool.

I'd deffo stay in SF, get a bit wild for a few days.. One GREAT City.. Enjoy it fully..!! Go Clubbing at DNA Lounge. Eat ethnic at all the various restaurants.. Indian Buffet meal, Thai, Chinese Dim Sum at New Asia in Chinatown (Stockton @ Pacific - not to be missed - 11am to 2pm only).. No need to drive around, just use feet, busses, cabs and trains.. Everyone just Hangs Out in SF.. Best place in the USA for doing that..

Union Street in SF is not the only choice for neighborhoods. I would choose a different area to stay. Expensive, crowded, no parking, a bit out of the way, and a bit pretentious too. The Real SF is more like "South of Market Street" (SOMA) for staying (prices are lower too) which puts one near all of the public transpo. Some places offer free parking, there. A big plus.

Another option, is to experience Haight Street, which is worthwhile, Big Time, as Mrs Babba indicated... The Red Victorian is a really cool BnB to stay at. It's not for everyone, is a bit European, bathrooms on the hallway. Each room is different and wild..! I always try to get a room that has a window on Haight. I can carefully take some surreptitious pipe hits with the window open, sitting on the pane.. Bring Earplugs. Get ready for the show..! Weekend nights are silly..!
Really fun Bars, restaurants, head shops, Amoeba Records (Go there if you like Music), all you want as an alternative thinker..!

Then drive up North to get an extreme Nature Hit - I am partial, but Mendocino's Coast is a wonderful destination with tons of Natural things to do. Beautiful beaches, and a coastline Beyond compare. Kayaking, whale watching, hiking, BEING...

Also, the Sonoma Coast is more than amazing. Rec'd route: Take Hwy 116 to the Coastal Highway out of Santa Rosa, and then all the way up to Mendo. about 2-3 hours on the Coast Hwy. Take your time, and use the "Turnouts," to let locals get by. You will get massive appreciation from other divers, and Good Karma goes a long way up North.. They know the road much better than you do.

Not much nightlife in the Country, if that is your need. But, Absolutely Awe inspiring drives all of them. Return via Hwy 128 through the Mendo Wine Country. And the HUGE Redwood Trees..

There is some decent weed if you get lucky in either county, haha..

You will return home, renewed.

Bon Voyage, regardless, Compatriot..!

Gonna go step out and catch the sunset before it is gone..! Green Flash Night..??

santa cruz is great place to stay, good beaches all around, 15mins drive to huuge redwoods. a 45 mins drive to monertey south or 45 to san fransico north.

Amen and good bud is everywhere and (unfortunately) cheap....San Fran is only 90 min north, Monterey/Carmel is 50 min south.....amazing area..of course I am biased as I live here!:tiphat:

My trip to Caliefornia!
:D
OK so I really loved going to see and feel california for all its beautieful land and sea and mountains and just an all around beautie.
I went for 7 days but next year I plann to go for 2 weeks because 7 days was way to short. So first we drove to carmel by the sea for 3 days. we stayed in a Vacation rental by owner from this really nice ladie. she had a house up front and a little cottage in the back. thats where we stayed. first day we went to the beach in carmel walked around. Next day we drove to big sur which was a bit smaller of a town that I had first thought. But it was a very beautiful trees and coast. we went to point lobos and holy shit the view was so very nice. it was a very nice day that day.
then on the threed day in carmel we drove up the coast to half moon bay then stayed at a quick motel for the night I had some munchie snacks cuz they had a microwave. got some beer and wached this show bout the worlds biggest crock ever caught in the wild. next day we got to have some home made waffles in the little breakfest knoock at the main office. yumm yumm. then off to sausalito, we drove up the coast line hiway 1. in sausalito we stayed in a nice little house boat, its another Vacation rental by owner place. It was decorated in this every thing is zen style. crystals hanging up in the windows and some ambent music was playing it was so nice. we koock in most of the time, grilled pepper n sassage pizza 2 nights and crunchy tacos with all the good ol grilled peppers and some stuffed J-peppers with cheese.
we went to SF on the last full day we had in cali. First we went to this cool little coffee/pinni shop. it was very tasty. the only thing that sucked it took us way longer to get there because some women cant read a map good. lol. I got to see china town and all the steep roads took a bit of time to get to HAIGHT HBURY but once we did it was cool to see and say I have been there, I even bought a H-A t-shirt its a big logo of the street sigh. later we had to catch the buss back to the ferry boat. didnt get to spend any time on fishermans worf. boo hoo. nor did I have enought time to go see the sea lions. hell I didnt even get to go on a whale watching trip. :( the 2ed day in sausalito we drove up into the mountains where all the fancy homes were. and boy do they have some bitchen views. back in SF i wanted to go to lombard but didnt get make it there. I loved waking up on the house boat to the sounds of seagulls and a fresh cool breez and befor we knew it the trip was over. :(

I cant wate to go back next year. this time for longer so I can get to see more stuff.

and when we got to the house boat the ladie was nice enought to give me a cupple of good buds to smoke. Then the 2ed night the neighbor came over with some wine and some good bud. so all that added a nother great feeling I have for califorina. also everyone we met was so nice. not one pearson was even the slightest bit rude or ulgy to us... :D

the beaches in cali r so beautiful that they make the gulff coast beaches look like crap!
and one day in big sur area we went to phifer forest park whach was a wast of time cuz the water fall was super small. I wanted to go to the other phiffer park that has the water fall falling into the sea. I for sure do that next time.
so my over all trip to california was a blasty blast. and i cant wate to do it all over agen next year maybe soonere like in the x-mas holidays.

Glad to hear you had a good time and were able to score, thats funny shit the lady hooked you up and then the neighbor comes over to top it off, shows you how much cannabis is in the culture. no one cares and damn near everyone smokes. if your guys are winos make sure to check out napa valley and do a wine tour. they put you in a limo and drive you around tasting wines in some of the most beautiful vineyards and hills around. If your in to big trees santa cruz has a very nice state park with huge redwoods. How did you like the golden gate? except the damn toll.

Theres not to many water falls lefts this year, were in a drought season. didnt have enough snow or rain for the water falls. If you make it down in march or april, you have to go to Yosemite national park. They have some of the biggest waterfalls around and in those months they are in their prime. You can hike up to a few of them pretty easy trails, pack a lunch and have a picnic at the top of the falls. well i could go on, glad you had a good time...burns

Big money in carmel and pebble beach. Check out monteray while your there only couple miles, you wanna take the 17mile drive through pebble beach also, 17miles along the coastal mountains, great look outs and plenty of places to hike to off that road, hidden water falls and secret lagoons.do u plan on staying on the coast the whole time? If not check out yosemite during the week, less crowds and great hikes.but a few hrs from carmel. Pismo beach would be another good spot to check out, not to far from carmel. Rent some quads or dirt bikes and go out on the sand dunes for a few hrs, so much fun, you can drive you car on the beach, set up a nice lunch or dinner.anyways have fun loking4 forward to hear about what u have planned.

Ok so new plans, we r now gunna stay at fernwoods motel/camping in big sur this place it has a live band on the days we r there and they have a lil bar/restaurant. we'll be there for the first 3 nights then its off to hike way up into the mountains to our next humble abode that is a VRBO.
we'll be staying here... http://donloui.com/

This time we are definitely going to the 17 mile drive and will be stopping every where all the way to pebble beach. Is the monterey bay aquarium worth going to. where is the best place to eat dinner in eather carmel or big sur? what about going to a winery for them tastings. I am a photography hungary guy, so where is the best plact for great photography in big sur/carmel/Monterey?
so now we will be only in the carmel/big sur area for the whole trip but the last day we will be leaving late at night like 11 or so from SF airport.

so what should we do in SF on our last day of the trip we have the car until 9 or 10 pm.

another good tips would be grate. Im liking all the info/tips u guys gave on what to do there. because yall have lived there now and or before so ya know the best stuff to do while there...

thx agen 1CB..

wow its getting closer to my vacation every minut, woo hoo and I cant hardly waight to go. Atm I am taking a summer college class in working with photoshop cs6 and it has been a blasty blast. I have learned a lot over the summer class. and it will come in good handy for the career im going for.

OK so we'll be staying in the big sur area for 7 days. and we wanna make the most out of our time there. so people on here have given us some gr8 sugestions on things to do and places to go see. but is there any more ideas. we deff gunna go to the 17 mile drive one day. we wanted to go to the montrey aquarium, is it any good.

so what else is good to do in that area? we thought it would be cool to take a lil horse ride some where there one day.

By the way she's not into dirtbikes or quads but I am a little bit into them even thou I don't know how to ride a dirtbike that well at all. I told her this trip is what ever she wants to do mostly, because last time we did mostly what I wanted to do.
she deff wants to hike the mountains and other beautiful places. last time we didn't take enough photos at all I mean at all! :(

we'r not that much in to lil gift shops but we do wanna go to a few good ones.
ooo what are some good places to eat out in big sure/carmel area.

anyway any more gr8 tips and ideas on things to do would be gr8.

thanks for ur help thus far.
