I love growing these things.I had about 40 this year and in one afternoon ,Squirrels came and had a party.
Not one seed left for me.I couldn't believe they got every single seed.
Lookin forward to see what happens with your project here.

I started with 12, Planted 8 outside at a foot high. And kept 4 inside just in case.

Overnight stray cats came and ate all 8 of em except the stems. Then the next day the stems dried up and died.

Good thing I kept these 4 indoors. I plan on transplanting outside before they bloom. But I want to keep them inside until I see a bud popping.

birds got all mine, the plants got like 8 feet tall but they got stripped pretty quick...

And that's the next obstacle I completely forgot about. God damn, Sunflowers may become one of the most challenging to do a back yard garden with. May wind up buidling my very first scare crow!!!

one of the best things you can do is buy a region specific gardening book and check and see if your nearest state college has an agricultural extension service.also for whatever plant you may try to grow theres an internet site devoted to it somewhere...theres tons of gardening sites and many will have state specific areas where you can see what people in your area are doing....find and make friends with your local nursery people, they are often a goldmine of local info on not only growing but where to get things like compost or well aged manure at bulk rates... and look around your neighborhood and see if anyone else has any growing, people with well tended gardens are generally more than happy to talk for hours about it...

If you were not already an OG with maxed rep that would have gotten you some.

Day 28 now

I just took some new shots of them today, Keeping them in a large rectangle tupperware type thing. Alot of roots visible from the bottom, they drink the hell out of water.
:tiphat:
Shortest of the 4 is 16.5" tall
Tallest of the 4 is 20.5" tall

I thought this was a cool closeup

Got top leaves as big as my hand almost

@Joe : I am certainly going to have to give that a try and get my buddy who does all vegetables outback, Never heard of it but willing to try, Hell its only a dvd. However I also have to deal with stray cats and city rats.

@kiwi : Thank you! Luck never hurts.

@izzybud : These 4 are Burpee Sunflowers. They are saying on the pack they will get 12' tall. Hoping to keep them closer to 6'.
You should post a pic or two of your harvested sunflower. Hell I know what you mean this was my first attempt at growing them also.

I saw this thread title and thought something beyond sunflowers, but this is cool!

I have some 8 footers now that haven't opened their flowers yet, deer got a bunch early on, but I think about 20 survived.

Anyway, good luck!

probably, plants are remarkably tough and really having sexy time and making seeds is their whole purpose,i dont know if they will set seed indoors without an insect to pollinate them, but i really have no idea how they pollinate....

Stupid f'in dog^----- Some mod should hook me up and delete that first post!

God / Satan / Mother Nature decided to teach me a lesson about physics and gravity.
I Took the remaining 4 that I had outside to let them soak up sun. I set them on a ledge outside. And not even 1 hour later the wind picks up and tips over these top heavy flowers.

Started with 11, City rats ate 7. down to 4. This catastrophic event took place, now I have 2 with bent / broken stems. And 2 that are fine.

Anyways. These are BURPEE Mammoth sunflowers Supposed to take 75 days to bloom. And supposed to get 12 foot!!!

Well keeping them in this tupperware at day 49 and only 4 feet tall. It appears even the 2 with broken / bent stems have begun to form flower buds.

After my speech, here are the update pics.
