compost in a bucket
compost in a barrel
compost in a pile
compost is compost
whether in a bucket or a barrel
compost in a pile makes me smile :)

Ode to Compost

Leaf and rind sit silent
atop the pile of waste
lifeless leftovers lingering
piled together in an organic grave

still sits the mound
quietly surveying the hum of activity
planting, watering, tending, milking, feeding, pruning,
harvesting, dancing, laughing, weeping, hoping

productivity surrounds the pile of refuse
restlessness judges the contemplation of the silent observer
yet in the inner life of that monastic pile
deep in the caverns of trash
the wet sponge of death is wrung out
hyssop and sour wine mixed with goat's milk and honey

beyond knowing and seeing
the pile teems and turns with
societies of decomposition
This civilization of death and decay
brings life

There is magic at work in the rotten stench
There is mystery to behold
in the watchman of the farm

The search for environmental ethics, in the conventional modern sense, seems wrong-headed and fruitless … [Some] think“environmental ethics can be as tough, practical, rational and secular as prevailing Western ethics.” I find this neither desirable nor necessary, and perhaps not possible. …

The search … is not for environmental ethics but for ecological consciousness.

The attempt to solve these ecophilosophical problems on purely logical or conceptual grounds is to fail to realize that this approach is itself part of the old paradigm which needs to be replaced.

Thank you for the poems Babbabud... and everyone for understanding.

Glad you finally got to shout it out Coba!

Sometimes lately those 'other voices' were drowning out all the really good things people have to say here at ICMag.

I never thought I was going to love rotting things....

Coba you the man....

Compost in a bucket that's what I go for

Timbuktu

I also use plastic of other shapes and sizes beside a bucket, thought the buckets are useful to be stacked in small square foot spaces, i might also add that this method of compost (in a bucket) does really well with holes added, since I dont have the bit (which costs $8) i use a japanese knife to whittle the holes

oxygen to the pile=gold

also (off topic) coba u know what kind of spider this is? i brought him in...

I can agree the poem is cool. Coba's rant is BS. So is the fantasy that voices were drowned out. As Forrest Gump's mom said, 'Stupid is as stupid does'

It can be misleading to people who can think one can make compost in a bucket. This is exceedingly difficult considering the ratio of carbon to nitrogen required, the input of balanced moisture and air.

I agree with Von that nobody has been made famous.

I want to state for the nth time, I do not cook my soil and so far as I know, neither does Coot. Not ever!

I will add that the holes allow for passage of earthworms into the bucket, when it is placed on the ground. I also like to scatter towels with my dogs anal expressions around the area to deter other animals from getting into the crab meal

can you poke some holes in this one?

The compost bin is a five gallon bucket, it has plants growing in it and at this point i add raw food waste to keep it going.

Initially (almost a year ago) it was a pile of house sludge (or typical diverse food waste that sat around a while) that I poured into a hole in the ground that was full of twigs and branches both dry and raw. the hole was in a shaded spot

a few months after i made this initial pile I came back with a shovel and checked, it was loaded with the worms and did not smell like it had before. I shovelled it into my bucket and can't seem to cut the plants in there back far enough. maybe not so much zen but i had to move

The name of the plant isn't coming to me but there are also barley thriving in there, as well as violets and pansies and ground cover

maybe it's not technically a "compost" but thats where all my raw garden waste and food waste from the house goes. :tumbleweed:

i have been literally composting in a 5 gallon bucket ~it's not the whole process. I use some finished compost and add a little yarrow, alfalfa, and dandelion {cause thats what i got} this time i amended it w/ kelp crab and greensand

today, i separated the ongoing vermicompost in my tote and put some 1/4" hardware wire in the middle so i could add this compost in a bucket to my worms and they could move in to this from the finished vermicompost in the other side
