Good call on the defoliating, I do it quite a bit myself
About a week before flower I take off all the lower stuff just like you did. That week gives em a little recovery time
Then I usually do it again in flower, after the stretch and once again once flowers really get going

Tie some branches down to lower em a bit if ya have too. Kinda like this...
