Well this will be fixture number two the first one was a 430nm veg light with a cfl seemed to give me some nice looking vegetative plants. The cost of the 100watt led plus driver is a $100 I just want to rethink things and get a clear vision of what I want.

I will be travelling to south America pretty soon so when I finish I will keep you posted.

Peace

hey habeeb, i like what you're saying about the sol. the wide spread with low height is what i need for my smaller cabs which are only a couple of feet high.
i wasnt aware that the SOL had a lens? i thought it only had a square reflector? given that most of our grows are square/rectangular it sounded a good idea to me.
HGL put pics of SOL units with round reflectors on their website until recently so that they didnt get copied until they were ready to release the units!

http://www.hydrogrowled.com/Sol-4---200W-LED-Grow-Light-P159C59.aspx is this what the actual light looks like? This looks a lot better than the render

yes i think thats what they will look like. i was told a while ago that they would have square reflectors when they get released - and no lens afaik.

hey man..

yeah, I was showing the round reflector lens for people who want to build something similar vs. buying the SOL..

yeah it's a great build. they moved the fans over the heatsinks, so the air blows through the heatsink fins, which is very nice.. the fans sound a little quieter then the X2, maybe that's just me, as my X2 is packed up right now ( have one with noctuas, one stock )

also as I said, you can get the light very low, while getting huge coverage space, amazing.. I think it will have high PAR ( getting my meter on Thursday to see ) as it only needs to be raised like 12 inches above tops to cover a 3x3 tray ( more info when I get the meter to verify ), if you want a smaller area for say the 200 watt, then your at about 8 inches above tops for a small unit!

the color rendering is a little better then the X2. not sure if it's the 2 green LED, but it's a little more red tint then the purple on the X2, you can see the plants a little more green vs. the dark color when looking at your plant under the X2. it turns a more pinkish white color when under it. nicer color render then the X2 ( but I'm giving them up anytime soon.. )

I already "modded" mine. cut the fan covers / replaced thermal paste / moved the reflector up as some light was leaking through into the case, as the reflectors didn't sit flush against the chip.. want to switch out the fans once Noctua makes some new 80mm..

I feel we have another winner here with HGL. also love the white case, very nice clean feel.

I wish I had my camera battery, as it's a good unit. also to show some PAR readings, but oh well.. what can you do.

enjoy yours VG when it comes in!! I was waiting for it ever since they put it up on there website.

please let us know watts.

I have a SOL 200 watt. it's got very nice spread. the thing I like is it looks like you can get it nice and low for good intensity ( 3x3 tray for veg ), and be able to light up the sides very nice..

I lost my light meter in a move, and sold my kill-a-watt... also no battery in my camera ( in storage ) so not much fun here.

I looked into making these ourselves. you can buy the chips in different watts online at ali, I guess the company pushing them is called vanq. link here. second thing to find is a reflector, as I opened the sol and ran it without a reflector, yeah bad idea, as the light go everywhere, looks like a 180 degree spread.. so no good, as you do need a reflector if building these..

I bought the SOL, as it's easy to buy a unit, HGL has been good to me, so it was a no brainier, but those interested, you can build these, I found a lens reflector here

Thanks for posting this! I've been on aliexpress and google looking for these exact lens, Im buying these led chips from hero led http://www.hero-ledstore.com/heroled-50w-led-c-2_185.html both cw and ww and building my own rig soon, i will document the process....I wanted to get cree xpg from rapid led but for the power and coverage i need the cost was very high lol...

^ no worries.

here's another.

I am trying to find one though like the SOL light ( reflector, no lens ). it's very nice, and would suggest it to anyone if we can find one similar or the same. these are just catching on, so it might be a while before someone makes one, or were not typing in the right term in search..

Lol, the way I see this never-ending bickering of HPS pageantry reminds me of the dudes driving around in their lifted F-350/Detroit Guzzler on Dub's telling the guy in the Prius/Honda/Econo-Car he needs a "REAL" car... Were all getting from point A to point B. Amazes me the way dudes just bash on L.E.D.'s (Like C.F.L.'s, lol, so 2006...) when the facts are right before their eyes... Sure your getting monster colas, but your wasteful management of energy is directly causing global warming (bwahaha I went there...)... End of rant...

Anyone got any words to speak on the 100w blackstar UFO? Good for a 2'x2' cabby?

thanks for the rant and...

on the subject of the blackstar, be aware that the 100watts is prolly only 60 as LEDs are under driven to give them long life.

60 watts/4 is only about 15 watts per sq watt in your setup. i would want a little more. 30 watts per sq/ft is a good rule of thumb for LEDs.

with that said, i would look into at least 180 watt panel. :tiphat:

I appreciate everyone's input! Don't we all love playing with more watts  , but in the L.E.D. world, more watts=more money. After seeing "Merry Gardener's" tub, I think I shall try something similar (And I am sure there's far greater room for improvement.). The light was only around $130USD shipped. Okay warranty, and I got no problem openin' her up and pullin' Frankensteins :bashhead: ... Even heard of em accepting them traded in for other units (135Wer' :chin: ). I am planning on going either 0-Veg Dr.Bud lollipop's, or Modular Scrog (Perpetual, larger footprint and additional "U.F.O.", area dependent. I think these are a perfect little starter array to dabble small-scale into the L.E.D. realm. It's supposedly got a nice PAR output, and 14,000Lm ain't too shabby. [YOUTUBEIF]http://youtu.be/jszZ2GuRmR8[/YOUTUBEIF] I recently added up the costs for JUST the DIODES for a small 21 bulb array from RapidLED at $99 alone (6 Band, but no drivers, sink, fan's, cordage, etc...) I will keep everybody updated (Lol, I mean at least whoever's in the micro scene...)! :tiphat:

If you are looking for good prices on LEDs and other LED related hardware, aliexpress.com has a lot of stuff and great prices. Sometimes you have to buy a lot of more than 1 item to get great deals, but they are there. Also, never forget the high powered LEDs need a constant current LED driver, not a constant voltage LED driver, and I don't necessarily trust those listings that list the driver as constant current, but have the common cathode / anode design that constant voltage LED drivers typically have.

I kindly disagree. 30w/sq ft is not nearly enough for LEDs. My Radiant tent is only at 37.5w/sq ft and the buds are way more airy than usual. Resin production is lacking compared to the other tent running 50w/sq ft

For LEDs I have been recommending 55-75w/sqft. This will make rock hard buds and also help with LED penetration.

I think GP7 is on the money with 30 watts. I have not had any issues with density or resin production running 33.33 w/sqf @ around 24" above the canopy.

30 watts/sq ft. is just what i have found to be a good average on all the grows i have researched and documented.

interesting that of all lights the radiant is producing the airy buds

well, people do 30w/psqft with hps too, and its still in most cases not 'recommended'.

Anyway. got my LED today from CLW - solarstorm 400w ;)

So met george while I was down there, and he gave me some more detailed 'presentation' information about the CLW lights, it seems to fill in nicely where i've not seen some of these details before. His figures compare very favorably to a 600w hps.
