Stinky, Garlicky Afghani

Back in '02 or '03 I got some really stinky, pungent indica in New York. It smelled like garlic, but not quite, and very heavy and intense like the whiff you get from a bottle of certain German lagers like Becks or Grolsch. Anyone know a strain that has an aroma profile like it?

It smelled so strong, a girl at college could smell a gram of it through a fleece and a down jacket over it. She told me I smelled great! In retrospect I should've smoked it with her, but I wasn't really about to share.

Garlic/burning tires/rotting meat/skunky funky smells are common in Afghani lines. Sensi carries (or carried) an Afghani called Garlic Bud that they claimed had a heavy garlic aroma. Never had experience with that particular strain, so I can't verify one way or the other. I have personally found some Garlicky phenos in Seedsman Afghani #1 and their old Hashplant offering (no longer offered). It shouldn't be too hard to find a garlicky pheno in anything with a heavy Afghani influence given enough selection.

Yup, I know it's an Afghani trait and I have a pack of Homegrown Fantaseeds Afghani on the way. I was wondering if anyone had recent experience with a non-feminized line that had that trait as I absolutely love that kind of indica. :)

Some people say ChemD has a garlicy tone to it. Haven't smoked ChemD but plenty of its crosses/semi-stabilized ChemD hybrids, I always get this nose searing sock/foot smell but I can see how people would say garlicy.

TopDawg seeds, I think all that are up right now are his crosses with it though. I snagged a pack of his Tres Dawg a while back, waitin for that opportune moment....

Rezdog also did alot of work with her, and his seeds are discounted at seedboo/bay.

Hopps and Cannabis are both from the Cannabaceae family, that's why it smells similar, because they both contain the same or similar terpenes. Beer and Cannabis loved recreatiuonally and therapeutically by all, is it any wonder mother nature has this all figured out for us, and it still satisfies after thousands of years of production.

Peace

Gelado,
I recently did a run of a bunch of different plants that turned out having a very onion/metallic smell. which isn't exactly what you posted about but it is pretty similar and maybe there was some garlic in there. but my thoughts for about how to bring about that phenotype.

I mainly got that smell from MNS Ortega (NL1*NL5) and MNS Medicine Man (widow*skunk). the Ortega was my first time running it but I had about 30 females and its supposed to smell like berries. but every single one had the onion metallic smell. I have run the medicine man once before and most of them had similar smell to that but there were two that had a berry smell. those two however did not have the berry smell on this last run. they also had the onion metallic smell.

I posted something about this on the MNS forum, hoping to investigate the cause, but everybody went off on me telling me I can't talk about the onion smell in any forum because they're supposed to smell like berries and I'm calling Shanti a liar and I'm trying to put them out of business. blah blah blah
those people are a bunch of mindless assholes. I don't go on that site anymore.

anyway since everyone went off on me I never got a chance to find out what brought out the onion/metallic smell pheno. you know a lot of times they say "you determine the phenotype just as much as the genetics do". I thought about starting a thread on here to see if anyone knew what kind of conditions bring out the onion metallic smell. but I cannot stand that smell so I was hoping to avoid it.

the one thought I had is that on the last run I grew those hydroponically in straight perlite rather than hydroton and I also used different nutrients but for the life of me I can't remember which nutes I used on either run.

my thought was that maybe the perlite encouraged the onion/ metallic phenotype to be expressed from the Afghani genetics. on the same run I also grew out a blueberry cross that I made it didn't really have any Afghan genes none of those plants had the onion metallic smell and they all smelled like a cross of the two parents. that was also in straight perlite.

perhaps someone with a lot more experience than myself could give you some suggestions as to what might bring out the garlic smell and maybe that will make your search a little bit easier

Yup, cannabis and hops are so alike some people have even grafted cannabis to hops plants and caused problems for the legal system. ;)

Interesting, Lammy, and it might well be environment causing changes in terpene expression. That MNS Ortega does sound interesting!

HP-13, maybe. I've seen it around before and its definitely something you can't carry in your pocket.

I looked into the MLI, but the price and the Sensi horror stories I've been hearing have me wary!

I have made f2's of the MLI and they are identical to the f1's from Sensi. This strain survived the crap that happened to some of the other Sensi strains.

Moondawg or D. S. Toker which ever name you like, will tell you this strain has not changed in 10 or so years that he has grown it.

Ortega is supposed to have some MLI in it and that has a rep for the garlic smell or taste. The MLI is not total garlic maybe some incense or spice thing that is hard to define. But garlic is a smell if not taste that could easily be included in the mix.

...I have personally found some Garlicky phenos in Seedsman Afghani #1...

Hi mate. I know someone who's about to flower these. Can you give any description as to bud structure, yield, taste, flower times etc? I can't seem to find any decent info anywhere on these afg#1 from seedsman.

TIA

^^ I grew out 1 Seedsman Afhani #1 and it had below average yield, was airy type buds, and thin sativa looking leaves.

The smoke was sedating and taste was typical afghan to me. For some reason quite often I would have some trouble breathing right after I smoked it so I shit canned it all. Allergic?

High was fairly strong but not knockout stuff. I would say you could take it 9 or 10 weeks in flower.

Thinking back on the strain from my first post, I think I found a few seeds in it too! I wish I'd been able to save that seed collection. :(
