Hello folks, this is the new book by the author/co-author of the classic Teaming with Microbes... published on May 7, 2013... not sure how I hadn't heard of it yet, hehe, all you folks are too hung up on your ROLS stuff to notice? tehehe...

so anyways, I thought it'd be nice if I sorta did a read-a-long thread... I ordered the book this morning so once it arrives I will post notes, summaries, and questions I have.

Hey now! Watch what you're sayin' about us ROLSers!

FYI, CC posted this a week and a half ago. Gotta get up pretty early to slip one past him. I believe he's finished reading it already, too.

The author of Teaming With Microbes has written a new book titled Teaming With Nutrients and in the Introduction he (Jeff Lowenfels) discusses the history of Justus Von Liebig's work in the 1840's that gave birth to the NPK mythology. 168 years isn't a bad run.

This new book from Mr. Lowenfels will hold little interest, if any, for the adherents of stoner science.

You won't find any alchemy or read any assignations of special properties to this or that material. The book is well researched with far more documentation (cites) than Teaming With Microbes.

The stoner scientists will have to come up with something better in their attempt to explain the benefits of flushing or their feeble attempts at explaining the special needs of this or that 'strain' (that term in and of itself is suspect), etc.

We'll see......

Such disgraceful overt sacrilege. Crucify him I say.

You know the needs of my purple rumpled squat indisat are far different than my tomatoes.

here's what ol' amazon says.

Just as he demystified the soil food web in his ground-breaking book Teaming with Microbes, in this new work Jeff Lowenfels explains the basics of plant nutrition from an organic gardener's perspective. Where Teaming with Microbes used adeptly used microbiology; Teaming with Nutrients employs cellular biology.

Most gardeners realize that plants need to be fed but know little or nothing about the nature of the nutrients involved or how they get into plants. Teaming with Nutrients explains how nutrients move into plants and what both macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients do once inside. It shows organic gardeners how to provide these essentials. To fully understand how plants eat, Lowenfels uses his ability to make science accessible with lessons in the biology, chemistry, and botany all gardeners need to understand how nutrients get to the plant and what they do once they're inside the plant.

Teaming with Nutrients will open your eyes to the importance of understanding the role of nutrients in healthy, productive organic gardens and it will show you how these nutrients do their jobs. In short, it will make you a better informed, more successful and more environmentally responsible gardener.

ordered up. amazon prime is going to be the death of my savings account. sounds like it will have a solid return on investment down the road as things progress.

Wow!
Ordered this book on the day I saw it online and I've read it all through already.
It's a long fantastic scientific journey into the plant cell. Every part of the cell is explained in details, and each of nutrients is followed in their paths through the plant.
Well detailed and written in a very understandable way for everyone.
Wonderful reading.
excellent book.

Go to the PDF link and hit Chapter 3 titled Botany for Plant Nutrition and if you don't read any other chapter and if you decide not to order the book, read this chapter.

In particular Mr. Lowenfels' discussion on Meristematic Tissue and its undifferentiated cells. Keep in mind that a plant has two 'meristem' centers - I think I remember discussing this over and over and over during the past 3 years but I could be wrong.

But probably I'm not...

the pdf looks very promising.

if publications like this means that newcomers or misguided growers can be pointed in the direction of some real science rather than treated with 'in' jokes and sarcasm - then more of them might stick around for long enough to learn something.

The first several chapters are totally fascinating. Really nicely laid out and explained in a way that is easy to understand.

When he gets to the money shot though...what to actually feed plants...not that great imo.

But overall well worth it.

Something to consider perhaps is that the co-author of Teaming With Microbes is Mr. Wayne Lewis who owns Alaska Humus Co. That factoid is seldom mentioned and for good reasons from a marketing perspective. Review the results of the tests and analysis on the Alaska Humus product specifically at MicrobeOrganics.com

Denali Gold, Alaska Magic, Ancient Forest (rebadged by GO), Alaska Humus and so on.

Oh, and the wheels on the bus go 'round & 'round all over town

Let me tell you about Timber Press (the publisher) and their digital messes. This is in no way a reflection of the author, Jeff Lowenfels, in any way.

Some publishers are doing a better job with digital books than others and Timber Press is pretty bad.

When TWM was released there wasn't a digital version offered - that didn't happen until the 2nd Edition was released but not really. When you would hit the TWM 2nd page at Amazon and if you selected the Kindle version you got a digital copy of TWM alright - the 1st Edition.

The only real difference was that a chapter was added in the 2nd Edition on mycorrhizal fungi with the rest left pretty much alone.

So you go to the page of the 2nd Edition, click for the Kindle option and then find out that you just bought the 1st Edition. Last time that I checked there was not a digital version for the 2nd Edition.

It took me a half-dozen emails between myself, Amazon & Timber Press to get a refund. The problem wasn't Amazon but this publisher. In the future before I buy any book that they digitally publish I'm going to use the 'Send a Sample' option - at least you get the cover, introduction and table of contents and then usually 1 or 2 chapters. That way I can tell what I'm buying from these jamokes.

Idiots...

Well at least they finally have the revised edition of TWM now LOL, just got the 'sample' - will have to order TWN if I have the ever elusive funds in the bank...
