It works, has no ethyl mercaptans, no smell, or taste, but does have about 28% Propane and it leaves significant amounts of paraffin on the mirror test.

We've used it when we were out of n-Butane, and Lucienne was not available, but only when we are also going to winterize to remove the waxes. Because we run a recirculating system, the 28% propane isn't an issue. Locally it costs less than $20 a case.

Damn, the low end of average cost here is 30$.

We recently loaded a recovery tank with Lucienne using a can tapper. The first 12 lbs or so went in relatively easy, but the non condensables brought the pressure up significantły. We froze the tank (-10f) and blew off any gases (propane included) through the vapor valve. We got a few more lbs in after that, but in order to fill it with all 23 lbs, we had to blow it into the pressure pot and then recover with the appion. After repeating the freeze and blowoff steps, we have a nicely purged tank of can gas. :) much cheaper than buying instrument grade solvent from airgas, too!

This is the tapper we used:

We only run about 10# of butane in our two process tanks, to leave more room to condense vapors. We load them using cans, by injecting the butane into the collection tank through the vacuum pump line using a can tapper, and allowing the Appion to pump it to the storage tank.

I have noted that it is hard to transfer a complete Lp-5 of n-butane using just heat and cold, so we usually split it up between two tanks, and pump off the last bit.

Well, I never thought of that! Thanks, GW.

Saw the Pharm mentioned in the latest High Times as a resource on extractions. Congrats!
