Veg N Out

I never had an issue with the worm soil factory, I have bought over 500 yards from them and always end up with a little extra left over. Dave and Larry are good honest people.

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought a yard of soil was about 200gal of soil. If that is true, then I got a lot more than I paid for when I got my soil from the worm farm. I bought 3 yards ( I know, small potatoes) and was able to fill 7, 100gal smart pots, and still have a 95 gal green waste bin full of dirt for all my transplants before they hit their large pots. So if my smart pots actually fit 100 gal(I filled to the top) I figured I got around 800 gallons of soil when I paid for 3 yards. This was also after loosing some on the 3 hour drive home. I tarped the load, and hosed it down, but I am sure I lost at least 25 gallons. Just couldn't be happier with my purchase from the worm guys, quality soil and they seemed to give me extra soil. Not to mention Dave seems super smart and gave me some quality pointers. :tiphat:

Pay up! First thing on Google search...

LOL...Youll never see those kind of trucks going up a residential driveway. Landscape centers and such who cater to the public (not commercial hauling) couldnt charge enough for soil to recoup their truck investment money. Also, most of those trucks arent allowed on residential streets because of commercial weight restrictions....CC

^damn 800 gallons steppin it up! at that point wouldnt it just be better to do mounds and trenches like vegnout? i know if i had flat space like your area i would definately do that....wish i could stop using "dumb"pots myself, im stuck using them because my garden is on a downgraded slope, i would need to terrace and thats just not happening, missed my change during the rains...

anyways, good info CC.....always gotta watch out for sneaks in this business! thats why its good to go with reputable company that other growers have used...

Thanks Props...Over the years, the 215 bulk soil thing has become a bone of contention with me. Maybe its the principle. The principal being that most all of the landscape companies, garden centers and even some local excavation companies who have jumped on the '215 soil sells!", can furnish little more information about their custom mix other than: "Its the best 215 mix ever!..." My biggest gripe is they stay as far away from the Pro 215 legal debate as they can but dont hesitate to giggle all the way to the bank.

I know of at least 3 landscape/garden centers, including 2 excavation companies in my area that compete heavily for the growers business every spring with much touted 215 mixes, but not one can or will provide a soil analysis, much less a detailed description of amendment ratios or even a way to verify if what they claim is in their mix, is actually in the mix. 5 years ago, these companies had never heard of 215 and basic top soil was about all they offered. Nowadays, all they really know is that if they label it "215", they can sell it at a premium. That irritates me big time. When an excavation company starts selling 215 soil, it pretty much says it all. LOL I'm sure their motto is: "Dirt is still dirt and we can charge a lot more for this shit......"

On the other hand, yea, the Worm Farm, IMO, is one of the few, if not the only soil company (if you can call it that) that I would consider " authentic 215 " and can back it up. I was buying bags of guano & castings from the original owners in 07, when it was owned by an older mom and pop couple. It was already beginning to be almost secretly known by the 215 grow crowd as the place to go to buy 215 bulk stuff and I remember at that time, you really had to whisper their name because Butte Co was massively anti-215. Most dont know that many years ago, the Worm Farm was actually a thriving commercial chicken ranch...I find that pleasingly ironic...CC

i plan to reuse my 1 year old roots organic soil. it was always fed only plain water from a well and top dressed with worm castings and guano once last lear.

i was going amend with toms recipe scaled down by a third because I'm in 100 gallons instead of toms 300

so I'm thinking :1 bag stuntman chicken manure 1 cf, 10 lbs steamed bonemeal, 5 lbs gypsum or oystershell
i was going to mix this into each of my 100 gallon pots of used roots soil.

also i had planned on mixing in 3-5 gallons of worm castings per 100 gallon too. (good idea ? or a waste?)

i plan on watering the mix and letting it cook for at least 2 weeks

so what do you guys think? toms mix with or without worm castings? does this sound like an ok ratio per 100 gallon?

before i decided to go with toms amend mix i had just planned on using: 1 full bag of malibu compost bu's blend, 1 full bag of buckaroo worm castings. and some bat guano 7-3-1 maybe a 3 cups. into my 100 gallons pots of used 1 year old roots organic soil.

again thank you all for your thoughts and ideas

Soil Delivery

Just to throw my two cents in on this topic, I had 160 Cubic Yards dropped off at my spot last year from the other worm farm out in Butte, and they actually ended up giving me closer to 170-175. Also, if they won't let you watch them mix it, probably not a place you want to be spending your dollars at. Both the worm farms out in Butte will let you watch them blend your custom mix, one does Manures and the other one doesn't.....my mix had manures in it........if I had the time I would love to do a side by side of the two different farms blends and see how they stack up against each other.

If you're out there FillThePotMore, it would be educational to hear your take on the two different worm farms in Butte.

I don't necessarily like all the mixes from the manure worm farm, but I do like all their products as far as compost/casting/manures/meals/organics etc go......Dave clearly knows his biology at the other farm and that's not debatable, I've spoken with him many times and simply stated....him and his father are stand up people. I know Veg is in Dave's camp but if any others have used these two farms it would be cool to hear your experience as well.

You must be talking about the other worm farm in butte, not the earth worm factory.

ok so i have read this thread all the way through. it took me at least 4 days. i have learned much from the masters here. however i'm still unclear about what tom hill does with his soil the next season. Mr. Hill do you reuse your soil the next season ? if you do reuse, do you just use the stuzman chicken, bonemeal and gypsum only to amend your old soil the following season? I only have 100 gal pots so i was going to amend my old soil with

1 bag stuzman, 12 lbs bonemeal, 6 lbs gypsum per 100 gallon. mix it by may 14th water it well let it cook and plant by june 1st-7th.

is this ok? my soil is 2years old last year I mixed 50% new soil into it. should I add any thing else you think? maybe worm casting, 3-5 gal per 100gal pot? or a full bag of compost per 100 gal?

durham worm farm sucks

earthworm factory ftw

If you don't like one of these businesses, could you at least say why instead of just saying it "sucks"? That's not really fair to them and not helpful to the rest of us who don't have the personal experience that you apparently have got with them.

Are there dishonest / cheap things they do? What's your beef?

Thanks, tjo, for the details. I bought some compost elsewhere this year and have been surprised at how many little bits of plastic are in it.

A friend got 15 yards of the EWSF top blend and I got to get up close and personal with it. Super-clean, maybe found one bit of plastic in a lot of earthy goodness. Really good looking stuff, we'll see how the seed plants chilling in their fives like it.
