hey guys right now my plants are still in vegging I have 12 plants in a 5x8x8 tent I built and im running a 400 cfm inline fan with a 400cfm carbon filter from active air and my house reaks... now did get a reall crappy brand or something? or do carbon filters just don't take out 100% of the smell?

im a little nervous cause when I go into flowering it know the smell will get worse.. and im doing my grow in my multi fam house that I own..

So check for leaks in the ducting or your connections.
If you are pulling air through any hoods you have the potential to bring in unfiltered air past the filter(at connections) that will cause smells.
I always use Can Filters way oversized for my room. I use a Can 50 for a 4'x5' room. Way overkill but well worth it. Absolutely no smell with face in outlet air stream.
I pull through my hoods but my connections are rock solid.
Pushing through hoods may be a better way for you.
Filter/Fan/then hoods. Not: Filter/Hoods/Fan

.. I have my inline then ducted to one light then ducted to the 2nd light then ducted to the carbon filter. the inline fan is pulling air

from the inline fan it go into my basement. (want to use the heat from the lights to help keep my basement warm during the winter to keep pips from freezing.

Sounds like you have it flip flopped and you are pushing air into the filter. The fan should be pulling air through the filter, then through your hoods, then through the fan and out into basement.

like this: Filter inside grow room====Hood===hood===fan out to basement

that is how my set up is set up

My additional 2 cents... I've had issues over the years with certain strains making my life miserable becuase of the stench, even in veg. What I've done is use an inline duct ozone generator after the fan to catch any smell that is missed by the filter.

So my setup is: Filter in room==>fan==>ozone generator==>out

They are expensive so this might not be your solution but it was the best solution for me and it works... even when I'm growing SourD or blueberry. If this does become your solution, be sure to keep the ozone generator outside of the room if possible.

seems to me something is not set up right if your filter is not even taking care of the veg smell fully.

basically you need to have the grow area under pressured, ie you suck more air out then you blow in, leaving the smells from the tent in the tent. so you need to suck the air out of the grow area through the filter. as long as your hose from filter to ventilation is perfectly sealed, any air you lose on the other side will be filtered air. so basically you have to create under pressure in your grow area to contain the smell and only allow air out through the filter.

ok this is how the room is built... I had a huge basement so I built a 11 foot wide by 21 foot deep room 9foot high. the room is completely sealed.. I put insalation in all the walls. then I covered all the walls, and ceiling and the ground with plastic. then I put sheet rock on all the walls and ceiling.. and then I put new plywood over the floor to cover the plastic.

then I built a flower room and veg room in side that big room. made it out of 2x3 and panda film. so in the veg room I have my lights and inline fan and carbon filter. from the inline fan I have the ducting leave the veg tent then up into the ceiling then blows the air into the other side of the basement

the reason im having it blow into the other side of the basement is because im trying to use that heat to help heat up the basement so my pips wont freeze in the winter.. and also my apartment is the first floor so figured all that heat will help keep my apartment warmer during the winter and help lower my heating bill a little( figure hell if im spending the money to use the lights use the heat if I have it avaible.)

oh and when I have my inline fan it is pulling out more air then what is going in. cause when im on the outs side of the veg room I see the panda film get sucking in .

Are you running the fan durring lights out? The fan needs to be running 24/7. Is the smell in the veg room or in the basement? If it is not smelling in the basement, then your filter is working.

Yes, the grow room, tent, plants, and ducting vent are all in the basement and it stinks down there. We need to know if the odor is passing right through the filter and out the ducting vent, or is there some other failure causing an odor leak somewhere else in your set up.

So to tell if the filter isn't filtering, does the air coming out the vent smell like pot?

i just went down to my grow room i put tape around the sides of my vented hoods were the glass swings up and down so that there is no air being sucked threw. Then i went to the other side of the basement to smell the air and i could still smell the pot plants.

to know what the problem is, we need to know if the air being exhausted into the basement through your filter is stinky, or if the stink is coming through some other way. if the air coming out from your filter is smelly, clearly the filter is not up to the task. on the other hand if its you sucking stinky air into the basement due to a leak, a bigger filter will not do anything.

oh and on a side note im not even using my inline fan at full power... i got one of the inline fan speed adjusters and i have it running around 10-15% power
