This is from the Wikipedia entry on rubbing alcohol. Obviously this won't apply to 99.98% industrial purposed ISO.

Legislation

In the USA, rubbing alcohol, USP and all preparations coming under the classification of Rubbing Alcohols (defined as those containing ethanol) must be manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the US Treasury Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, using Formula 23-H (8 parts by volume of acetone, 1.5 parts by volume of methyl isobutyl ketone, and 100 parts by volume of ethyl alcohol). It contains 97.5-100% by volume of absolute ethyl alcohol. The rest consists of water and the denaturants, with or without color additives, and perfume oils. Rubbing Alcohol contains in each 100 mL not less than 355 mg of sucrose octaacetate or not less than 1.40 mg of denatonium benzoate. The preparation may be colored with one or more color additives. A suitable stabilizer may also be added.[4]

Also note that 99.0% Iso doesn't contain ethanol and isn't classified as rubbing alcohol.

99 iso

99 iso

Our local Cal Ranch store, in the veterinarian section. One gallon 99% for around 20 dollars.

Prescott AZ.

Use it for a topical salve and infuse coconut oil. They boil at different temps. Reduce the alchohol down then add the coco oil. Then boil the remaining alcohol off ( the coco oil has a higher boiling temp).

We get it, you love safeway's CRAP ISO

I also read that using a mirror test safewaybrand ISO left behind nastywhite residue while clean actual ISO left nothing behind.(Mirror test is simply letting the ISO evaporate off of a mirror at room temperature to see what is left behind.)

Juice. . . Better shut your mouth, lest your foot make you choke on it.

You don't really have anything to say/offer about ISO. You don't know what you're talking about(repeatedly sighting threads from memory that you can't even corroborate) You have no evidential experience about this subject. Go out into the world, and come back when you understand this subject, and have something to offer this discussion.

the mirror test done on 99.989% ISO STILL has clouding/fogging (from the residual 0.0110% H2O) GW's whole point, is that due to the fact that you can NOT drink ISO (its not ethanol) it doesn't require denaturant/etc. . . . Clean room grade ISO [used to clean electronic boards before/after soldering] does not have any additives!

its important we all understand whats going on here, and don't just make assumptions based off something we thought we read (3 years ago). We're really actually trying to increase the knowledge base here, and NOT just making statements based on a heartfelt opinion.

I think that re-reading GW's posts might be in order - nowhere does he advocate for Safeway's ISO, he is simply stating facts. You may not be aware of it, but he has probably forgotten more about this subject than most of us will ever know.

And no, I'm not saying that as a proponent of ISO - the only time I tried it, it was a lung-searing, eye-popping experience regretted for a couple of days afterward.

Everyone will talk till the cows come home about "purging" Butane!
But when it comes to ISO(or even Ethanol) you all run away screaming! It really doesn't matter what you're talking about; ISO,Butane,Hexane,Ethanol, ALL of these solvents/carriers have to be removed from your concentrate AS COMPLETELY AS POSSIBLE.
Some come with a little water(alcohol) as a bonus F U to remove, some come with Pentane, propane, isolates, even mercaptains and sulfers if you use cheap solvent("Can Tane"). It all comes back to an understanding of WHAT, and WHY we're doing.

Rives, I'm so sorry you had an unpleasant intro to ISO residue. I hope somewhere in the future, lays in wait a delicious sample of ISO washed concentrate, waiting to fill you with warmth and smiles!

I get it! you can't keep on the subject, without turning it into a personal attack. I don't feel singled out, because I watch you do it to others on an ongoing basis.

Any brand of iso, that has lanolin added, leaves behind nasty white residue.

A little more investigation on your part will educate you to the fact that they add lanolin to 70% and 91%, but not 99.0%. Any cloudiness is from water.

On the surface, it seems that you read a lot, but have little actual practical experience. That is OK, because we all are ignorant on one subject or the other.

Like rectums however, we all have opinions. You are entitled to yours, but you would present a more intelligent image, and the forum would be more harmonious, if you share yours less harshly, especially until you are better versed on the subject matter.

I use everclear to extract from trim. If I let it sit and evaporate I get nice "shatter" or gooey oil, that is safe for smoking.
I would never use rubbing alcohol.

I have read that 99% contains just that, 99% alcohol and 1% water. And the 1% water is very difficult and expensive to remove.
I'm not sure if there's traces of other things in it.

99% EtOH may contains traces of toluene.

Is that added as a denaturant Jump? or does it "piggyback" with the EtOH during distillation?

I was once lucky enough to observe someone using cellulose absorption (a corn grit alcohol dehydration unit) to turn 180proof into 199+, very interesting! They had designed to use absorbent, because the energy requirement for those last 12proof (180 to 192) was considerably more than using-and regenerating absorbent instead.

I've also seen someone do similar with a modified water heater, and hot-lime (unslaked). . . They filled the water heater with course lime, then dumped 190+proof to the brim (sealed/insulated over night) and 24hrs later it tested at almost 200Proof.

So since we both agree it is counter productive, shall we stop and focus on supportable scientific data, as opposed to the individual?

Since (lol) the personal attack observation sailed over your head, may I explain?

The issue is whether Safeway 99.0% Isopropanol is adultrated, not whether "We" (?) get that I am defective enough to love Safeway crap.

People can and do have opposing views, without evil intent, lack of intelligence, or secondary agendas.

You are also profering that Safeway 99% Iso is crap, while still avoiding my request for your data supporting that.

Is the difference between attacking the issue or the messenger more clear now?

Pretty much in line with the quality of your other evidence to date.

Do you have any actual data to back up your statement, so that you might be taken seriously?

For instance why it is bad quality and what they advertize that isn't so.

I was thinking about it. . . . it would seem to me, that if you were to use anhydrous EtOH as a carrier (closed system, thus not subject to the ambient moisture) and then vacuum desiccate it(again, closed, dry environment) it would vastly increase your purge/boil-off efficiency. . . perhaps?. . . . hmmmm, back to the laboratory. . . . .

Yes, I have huge scientific data and tons of secrets. But why release them here to unworthies.

I will just post truth and leave it at that.
