whitefly ?. gnats ? superfly?

picture.php

hi guys ,

i am growing indoor in soil and after recent floods i noticed some "whiteflies" hanging around .After some inspection i noticed they were in the soil as well as on the underside of leaves.

The war begins..

Neem oil , abated them for like 4 hours , pyrythium , killed any evident ones flyin around , 12 hours later they were back in force , natrasoap slowed them a little ,then yesterday i soil drenched with dipel and then used a chilli garlic tabacco spray. As well as this i have been in there with a vacuuum shakin an vaccin for freakin hours.
Woke up today they as bad as ever, its been like 12 days or so now,
i really need some help i have tried to identify these little fxkrs but so far no joy any help would be appreciated . .

peace

ps the above pic the fly is a little squashed {i had to half kill it to stop it moving to get a pic}. Also there was larvae in the soil which i figured the dipel would deal with.

whats ur temps in the room ? and can u drop them for a little till u figure out what to do about bugs? i have found higher temps cause bugs to reproduce like a mofo.. but when i cooled my room off by bringing in some winter air getting it down to like 55-60 F .. and worked on getting rid of any kind of bug in that weather.. the cooler it is.. the slower they reproduce is what i was told.

cheers ozzie i tried the neem soil drench , seem to be a lot less activity now , and basement , i am keeping the temp in mind , i heard the same thing , although that was for mites still , safer than sorry

temperature is key to these little bastards staying alive.. think about how many bugs are living in the winter..? drop ur temps a little.. so they dont keep reproducin so fast.. then find some sprays at garden center.. and spray that bitch with 2-3 diff products.

cover the soil with cement lol
I am no expert but you actually can cover the soil with an inch of sand or little stones to prevent the breeding a bit .. I read that somewhere, mb you can investigate more info to that.
And of course you can hang up some of those yellow fly traps.

use diatomaceous earth over open soil.Dont bother with different combinations of potions.Gnats are actually composting initially doing you a favour. It is only the when population takes over they start to do damage.

good to hear it worked for you...neem in soil i have read is active for up to 55 days. i would reapply every week or two to keep the bugs away as well as help the plants grow. watch for roots popping out the bottom of your pots...

mustard that actually made me lol i guess it looks like a gnat, though there are types of whitefly that look a lot more like mine .Do gnats lay larvae?

Spiritual , can u elaborate a little on the diatomaceous ? Is it like the mosquito dunks? Can u get it from any nursery ect?

much love 4 all the replies

basically, you put a layer on the top and bottom of your pots, breaking the reproduction cycle and ending the problem before it began. http://www.richsoil.com/diatomaceous-earth.jsp

DE is almost pure silica (with some beneficial trace minerals); under a microscope, it looks like shards of glass (glass is made from silica). On any beetle-type insect that has a carapace, like fleas and cockroaches, the DE works under the shell and punctures the body, which then dehydrates and the insect dies. DE is totally nontoxic. There is no buildup of tolerance like there is to poisons because the method of killing is PHYSICAL, not chemical.

Fungus gnats' main danger is that their larvae eat roots.

The infestation has to be very established to pose a real threat to plant health in my opinion.

Any coco grower has seen these little buggers.

It does suck to get the ugly little bastards stuck in pretty trichomes though.

diatomaceous earth.

If you can, mix it in with your soil before you plant. If plants are already in soil, spread it over the top of the soil.

Or get one of those bulb aspirators. Find them in the baby isle. They work great for spraying fine clouds of the stuff.

I have tried mixing it with water and applying it like that but the stuff acts weird when mixed with water and it was a pain in the ass.

I mix it in with all my soil now. Plants seem to like it and I havent seen a bug in months.

cheers guys i tracked some de down today will be arriving tomorrow ,seems like my unwanted guests a thriving despite my efforts . i dont want to use pyrythium again the smell stays for days and is very unpleasant . I guess i will spray w natrasoap or neem today and hopefully the de tomoorowwill allow me to spend my days worrying about shit other than superfly .

can i ask how much neem you used in the soil drench?

i use 5ml/litre as a maintenance dose and 12ml/litre to address an infestation.

please let me know how you go with 12. just keep in mind that neem isn't an instant knock down and it can take several days for all bugs to die...

a quick update ; diamatoceous earth is the shizzle! tx spiritual for that.it seems to have cut them dowm by 95% at least. I spread a layer on top of the pots watered them from the bottom for a few days so it stayed dry at the top . Any aussies need to know where to get the food grade stuff mount sylvia is the only producer in aus they will point you to the nearest distributor , i ended up getting it thru a beekeeping supply place .go figure.i will be using neem and d/e from now on . tx again fellas nice to have green girls again!!
