Apollo 600w HPS/MH Switchable/Dimmable Review

I'm posting this because I didn't find enough decent information on these ballasts offered by Apollo Horticulture, e-z to find on Amazon. I really searched the entire internet, not just ICmag and other grow sites. I also did a ridiculous amount of reading before committing to buy any digital ballast - been growing for many many years and have always thought about it but scared myself off. That said, I'm in no way affiliated with this company or any company-check my threads :tiphat:

This is an insanely long post. If you're anything like me, you read for hours before purchasing anything, especially if it's related to your babies. Skim it at least. I have been on this board for years and am OG refugee too, if you don't see any updates from me in this thread then EVERYTHING IS STILL TIP TOP WITH THE PRODUCT! I won't bail on this - if bulb blows, ballast shits the bed, cable guy comes knocking - I WILL POST!

I have built every HPS or MH ballast I've owned in the last ten years. I always buy raw components from places like 1000bulbs dot com and throw them in to creative cases. I liked their price - I liked feeling like a badass instead of forking over hundreds for the exact same internal components. I hated the weight, the buzzing noise, and the heat!

Things that scared me away from all digital ballasts:

  1. Price
  2. RF Interference, cable guys coming to my house
  3. Bulbs burning out mid flower
Things that made me okay with the switch:

  1. A lot of digital ballasts are made in the same factories in China
  2. I'm sick of hearing the buzz/hum of my ballasts
  3. I hate moving the damn things when I rearrange or move out
  4. I found cheap decent reviewed digi ballasts
  5. I read I can minimize RF interference should it be an issue, by shortening the wire from the ballast to the bulb
  6. I plugged a small fluorescent work light in (does nothing for plant growth) - but comes on with HPS to make sure flowering cycle isn't totally effed up should a bulb stop firing.
Anyway, I paid like $115 per ballast and got two of them - free shipping. They weigh 5.2lbs each - each ballast came with a VERY heavy duty 120v and 240v cable, like far thicker than your average desktop PC power cable. It's beefy.

The ballast has a female socket coming out of it, I can't think of the name of this style plug but I cut and paste the plug style in to the pic I took of my two after I unboxed em.

--------------------
Initial Impression

Packaged well, shipped in an Amazon box so stealth wasn't really an issue in that regard. Wrapped in anti static bag, 3 year warranty card in each ballast's box.

The first thing I did was wait until about 20 minutes before my timer was going to cut on my magnetic ballast. I put a radio upstairs and found a good station to listen to. Sounded good. Next, I unplugged my magnetic ballast from timer, unplugged lamp cord from magnetic, plugged in to digital, plugged digital in to timer. Then I cracked the tent open and waited for timer to cut on.

  1. The radio station's clarity was the same, even though I didn't shorten the lamp cord as mentioned above. I run bare bulb sockets in a vert setup so the +/-/ground cables all are exposed to the mogul too. *My cable tv and internet both are working same as before, zero issues. My neighbor/friend said the same*
  2. The bulb lit up faster than I've ever seen
  3. The bulb is FAR brighter. Yeah, your eyes aren't a fancy light meter - I know - and it's not even good to look at the bulb, but later in the night I unzipped the tent to check and was BLINDED. I've run the same tent/type of magnetic ballast/brand of bulb for years so I have a good base line.
  4. The ballast is just barely warm - running far cooler than my previous setups.
--------------
Conclusion

I've only been running this for I think 4 days and will fire up the second ballast when I start my next crop in a couple days.

I am using $20 Plusrite brand bulbs and always have - the bulb is a year old and been used for 3 harvests. I will replace it after this run. Since the bulb didn't blow immediately and hasn't blown yet, I would like to think that it's probably as good as the majority of 'grow' bulbs on the market. So, my worry of it being a crap ballast and toasting my bulb is out the window.

The only part making noise is the tiny fan that vents the ballast. It's kind of high pitch, but it may very well be that way because of how small the fan is. Can't really fit anything bigger but one day I may crack open a ballast and see what size it is, and if I can order one from the internet to replace it that has good reviews.

Since I have no apparent RF issues even with a 12 foot lamp cord, I'm cool with the situation for now. Your mileage may vary I guess, that RF shit seems like dark magic.

Price was insane, again $115 each, 3 year warranty, free shipping. Who knows, may be made by same overseas workers that make the big guy's ballasts for twice the cost.

That's a great pointer mate I'm after a couple of new ballasts, are they dimmable? Did you get the cool tubes with them? Do they affect the light/lumens reaching the plant at all? Cheers thanks for your input.

Holy fuck, was just gonna post if anyone had any experience with this exact product. Do you happen to know if when you set it to 50% if it uses 50% of the wattage, or does it remain the same wattage, in your case 600 watts? Would be awesome if someone could test this with a wattage meter.

Any additional information about how the dimmable option works would be great... Im looking at the 400 watt version currently.

Jack - I just purchased the ballasts (yes they're dimmable 50/75/100%). I saw they had package deals too and I'm sure they're fine if that's what you want for your setup. I run vertical bare bulb so I didn't need any of that stuff. I did run 1200w in a dual socket 3 foot long cool tube hung vertically a couple years ago and it definitely does something to light output, probably because it gets dirty inside fairly quickly. It was impossible to clean something that big too because arms aren't long enough, and sockets are in each end. I'm sure you can find a bunch of threads on the effects of cool tubes on light output though.

Bobbles, I know that digital ballasts use less energy when dimmed and I just bought a killawatt yesterday.. but to tell you the truth I'm really hesitant to touch the knobs and find out the exact consumption, I don't want to jeopardize effin up my cheapo yet reliable Plusrite bulbs.. they've been good to me and I just don't see dimming em being good to them. Anyway, all still going great with the setup, both ballasts ended up working fine and 1200w is just about the brightest thing I can imagine getting smacked in the face by, vertical eyeball destruction (yeah, I don't make a habit of it)

This is what's on the Amazon ad:

"Compatible w/ 120V and 240V power supplies (We include a 2 meter 120V chord), High frequency output results in less power loss (50/60Hz Frequency), 99% Power factor"

Sounds like a good ballast so far.

This is a great thread. We need more reviews like this. It's hard research nowadays because all we really get are the ads.

^Thanks man, I have this problem on all message boards (grow related, truck related, bs forums) where I transform in to the TL;DR BOSS hah. Like I said, people who are truly interested in this product can learn more here in one thread in less time than they will reading for hours across dozens of message boards with incomplete posts.

Since I'm running two 600w lights vertical (one hanging from roof of tent, one from the bottom aiming up) I'm just using the top one to get the plants to stretch upward a little more. Bulb has been going for 8 days without any sign of problems and ballast still makes me grin ear to ear.

I will mention that the heat coming out of these ballasts is minor. You can barely tell that the fan is blowing out anything warmer than room temperature. The casing is the same way, so barely warm you can hardly tell.

HOWEVER - if you unplug the ballast or the timer goes off, the fan stops immediately, and some components stay warm. The casing does heat up at this point. If you wait ten minutes and plug it back in, you will feel significantly warmer air coming out - not hot though. I guess there's no way for a ballast to keep the fan on after losing power unless it had an internal timer for the lights on/off (god that'd be neat) but we'll see if it has any impact on reliability. 3 year warranty tho!

Hey I was checking out the 400hps version and I noticed on the ballast it says input 5.6 amps? So it uses 560 watts for a 400hps? For comparison most 400hps, even the digi lumatek use 3.6 amps totally like 430 watts. Does your 600 show the same extra amperage? It would be labeled on the ballast itself.

A typical 600hps would be 5.47A, so the 400 digital Apollo light uses just as much as the lumatek digital 600?

I dunno, but I figured this should be noted because thats a huge difference in power consumption between ballasts.

*It should be noted I was very medicated at the time of writing this so I may have it all wrong and just spent the past 30 minutes researching something that didn't need to be.

NICE post!!! i just bought 2 of the apollo 600w cool tube w/big ass hoods for both my tents. where do you mount the ballasts? my grow is in the basement, its always nice and cool (imo 70* +/-), so going to use the cool temps to my advantage.

whees my edit button? lol

what the benefits of the dimmer? if yu wa the full 600w for owing, wouldnt dimming the bulb output defeat the purpose?

I can think of a few reasons-

Getting plants accustomed to more intense light after vegging under fluorescent lights, when you can't keep temps under control, when you want to use some of your gear on a smaller grow setup and don't want light bleaching / also can't control heat..

Probably more reasons, but that's just what I can think. I figured it'd be cool to do if I want to grow during the summer and can find a good temp on one of the dimmer settings.

Pretty easy to mount the ballasts, you can screw them on to the wall if you want - there's holes in the frame perimeter so you could put a screw or two in a stud and hang there. I'm sure you already figured this out though since your post was a while ago

i dont think ill have any hood heat issues. im running a 440 cfm fan per hood (2x hoods) on thermostatic timers (on/off at certain tem ranges) and a 440cfm for my monster charcoal filter (8"x24").

i can see dimming the 600w lights on juvinile plants

Still very much pleased with these things and will soon be at 30 days flower, running both ballasts now for 1200w total / 4x4 tent. Both bulbs are like a year old and cheapos, still kickin'.

If I plug this company too much (or any company I guess), I could be accused of brand humping and being an undercover vendor or for having some $ interest in the company. Naw, I just answered a PM on a Toyota Tacoma message board that explained my entire life philosophy. I buy shit that has good reviews and costs much less. I wind up loving these companies for giving me an 'out'. Not everything has to cost $$$, and companies just LOVE to fuel the whole following they get when people are like "Is it worth it to cheap out?!".

Just do it.

i was looking into this light a while back but i dunno if im ready for a setup that big im used to micro growing. what size fan do you think is needed to keep a 4x4x7 tent cool with one of those 600w lights?

I use 2 Ipower 600w digi's in a 6x8 room with mh/hps hortilife bulbs. Never had a problem. They were 150 apiece when I bought them off of Amazon. Came within 5 days, and so far have worked flawlessly. I read about 10 million pages of reviews and besides someone receiving something broken (which they promptly replaced) everyone was all good. I haven't noticed any interference so I'm gonna ride them until the wheels fall off, or I go to a larger op.

3 out of the 4 not working after first run :(

I ran one grow about a month later i was going to start another grow and 3 our of the 4 light systems from Applo would not start. I am currently working with there tech support to see how they handle this issue. i will post when i find out what this customer tech support is, so far they are working with me.
