Damn this thread brings me back a few years! I started puffing herb at around 15 years old, and then my tastes in music gradually got to be less & less angry... Some old favorites that I don't find to be horrendous to my eardrums these days are:

Operation Ivy
Dead Kennedys
Dropkick Murphys (before the departure of Spicy McHaggis)
Misfits w/Danzig
(Old) NOFX (The Decline and what came before that
Rancid
Clash
Suicide Machines
U.S. Bombs
Flogging Molly
AFI (before the "dark" shit got the best of them)
Stiff Little Fingers
Social Distortion
Propagandhi

An absolute classic from the punk heyday think it came out 79 was The Ruts first album 'The Crack'.... .
There was a lot of mediocre stuff around in them days (yes im that old) but the heavyweights were The Sex Pistols, The Clash,The Ramones, The Damned, The Ruts, Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers, The Dead Kennedys. There were loads of peripheral bands such as The Lurkers, 999, UKSubs, Killing Joke, but they were all lightweight compared to the ones who started the Punk thing.
You could of course date punk back to 'The Stooges' first album or The New York Dolls. Some would go further back to the 60's : Love - (theres a track on 'Forever Changes ' called 7+7 Is, thats a great punk track by any measure. ).......also the MC5 'Kick Out TheJams' is punk...think that was 69.....lots of the psychedelic US bands of 67 etc such as The Seeds are punkish....

Love seeing the Misfits listed so much. Nothing like it.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anyone mention Jawbreaker - one of my favorite bands ever. They aren't purely punk by any stretch, but that is their foundation, with some epic musical breakdowns and ingenious lyrics. Every album in their catalog is different, but check out 24 Hour Revenge Therapy.
