Wow, do you all over think this whole thing sometimes. lmao! I can see your points though in a way. Me, well I just put the pieces of the puzzle together and let nature take its course all the while making sure there is an optimum environment for it to succeed. Compost making is an art as well as vermicompost. I do agree with the use of various types of rock dusts in different forms. Some of you like all powders but I tend to use different particle sizes in my mixes. Such as my Oyster shell. I get the Oyster shell crushed that is used for chickens. It gives a longer decomposition time in the mix and I combines this with different types of gypsum and yes I still use Dolomite lime (in the powder form) but not dominantly like I used to.
If you are worried about the amount of Ca in your mix just increase the use of EWC and that should suffice. I add mostly EWC after the first grow cycle just to freshen up the soil in preparation for the next time it is to be used.

I will add to this.......don´t forget the Ca and other secondary micro-nutrients in the rock powders also. The too have an affect on the ph of your mixes-I use crab meals for the high chitin content.

i am also a fan of the fabric pots, i have a few from all the different makers (i get alot of free stuff where i work) and cant really complain about any of them. im about to implement a few yeildpots which are more nylon feeling and im told dont stream water out the sides like the others. we'll see about that.
bluejayway- ill drop the alfalfa, i enjoy brewing the teas, so i wouldnt want to miss out. the rest seem ok? i just ordered 20 lbs of neem meal, 44lbs of glacial rock dust, and 12lbs of crab shell meal. the rest i have except the compost, but thats just a craigslist search away with all these farms around.
have also been looking around for seeds so i can grow my own tea ingredients right outside in my flower beds (not really a flower guy). things like comfrey, borage, lavender, sage, rosemary, and was even thinking a raised bed for some alfalfa. anyone else do that? or do you just forage and hit the wonderful herb?

you got it my man, i use them inside and outside. they even have ones that are like raised beds!
last summer the sales rep donated a bunch of 20g smarties to the store and we did a big urban garden (on the loading dock and parking lot) grew all the usual suspects, but we even took a 35 gal and then cut the bottoms out of 2 20 gals and stacked them for potatoes.

The larger sizes are also good for what they call Pocket Planting as shown below with more examples at the link

i'm about to pack a bowl with this little nugg...
it's just some bag seed that i grew out, but the cool kids called it "kush" when i bought it. tastes hashy, not too bad even though it hasn't gotten a cure.
I have used some for cherry tomatoes, bush beans and pepper plants in the past three years outdoors. Same pots, same soil (for all three years) same feed as my medical plants. They work great and are somewhat mobile, although roots do grow out the bottoms. Probably good cover for clandestine gardens too

Using a large one gives you a very compact kitchen herb garden. We keep ours on the deck near the sliding-glass door from the kitchen. Just take a pair of scissors and cut-off what you need for your recipe.

Your aeration items, are those things you already have? If so rock 'em - if not, consider pumice/rice hulls - I love starting a mix with 50/50 rice hulls and pumice as my aeration.

Is it the SS version? I grew out the SS white russian, really stinky WW dominant phenos were the better ones tho

The Luebke's say add 10% clay...I was simply wondering if srp would count as a clay given its colloidal nature. I like what it brings mineral wise.
