What's new

otis' vertical experiments and other projects

I uploaded some pics to an album and I am attempting to start a thread. I am computer illiterate, so i hope i can make it happen. The set up that is about to go into flower is a coliseum/stacked donut. 1000wt above a 600wt surrounded by screens to train the plants to.

Ok. that kind of worked. I will work try to work out the reason my photos are upside down. The strains are og13 on top and sour jack on bottom. I am feeding them the house and garden full line. i have grown both once before. the sour jack smells and tastes pretty much like sour diesel, but it didn't yield as well as I had hoped. Hopefully it can be dialed to produce a bit better because everyone loves it. The Og13 is an awsome yielder and has great bag appeal and potency. I expected it to smell different. It smells kind of earthy, a nice scent, I just thought it would be different. In any case it too is a hit with friends and family.
I have a 1000wt experimental ppk donut next to the stacked donuts. I read about them forever trying to wrap my head around what was going on in those ppk threads, then one day everything just made sense and seemed too simple not to try and build one. so here is a shitty pic of that.

Cool looking setup bro. Hard to look at the pics, lol.....but the grow looks cool hell.

How far are the plants from the bulb?

:tiphat:

Plants are about 20-24" from the 1000wt and 14-18" from the 600wt. I was a little concerned about the distance because in the past my plants were closer, but they turned out as big and dense as usual. I figured out why they are upside down, and will ploidy some better pics when I get off work later. Marlo, your grows have been an inspiration to me and many others. Thanks!

Ok, I've got some better pictures today. Woke up this morning to run away blumats. Because I am using bigger pots this run, my drip trays are too small. I I usually have a couple in ths beginning that need adjusting, no big deal. However, I Have had such impressive growth in the ppk's that I'm probably switching to multiple feed/day dtw in all my set ups. I have a bunch of blumats between here and my rental, so I may use them for my many plants in veg. I'm in the process of building a 4x8 coco bed similar to bldswtrs. I will get some pics of that up next time I go over there. I know its not vert, but I want to be a well rounded grower and those are the only thing horizontal that has really piqued my interest so far. Here are some better shots of my stacked donut screens:

So, I began my grow career last Feb, 2012 with 10 pineapple express cutting that I paid 250$ for, not because I wanted to grow pe, but because this was all I had access to. This is also why I paid so much for the cuttings....and they were just that, fresh cuttings, not rooted clones. The guy I got them from later lost his mother and had to ask med for clones, which I GAVE him. I give away clones to the few friends I have that grow, and will not charge b/c of my first clone experience. If you want a bunch I will ask you to bring me a bag of plugs.
The reason I ended up doing vert was that when I began, I had very little money. I was reading Web sites, looking for basic info on growing while I waited to have enough money to buy a decent size reflector when I stumbled on the vertical section her at icmag. all of a sudden reflectors seemed like a waste of money and light. I realized that I did not NEED a reflector, and I would be better off without one.
One of my original 10 cuts died, I saved one as a mother, and flowered 8. My first run I harvested 26Oz of dry manicured bud and a sit ton of larfy crap that became hash. My first grow and my first vert grow and it was a success!

Up until my last run, my harvests have been getting better and better . I just added the screens last run, I didn't really train them well and think I stressed them by training too aggressively. On top of under vegging some, my temps were dipping down to 58° on very cold nights. I learned allot from my last run on the stacked donut cage, so I am pretty confident that I can at get back to .7-.8g/kwh.(.6 this last run). I bought a space heater, I vegged for a decent amount of time, and now have a really good ideas of how to train the plants to the screen _

I'm constantly taking clones, between here and the rental, and projects that require scores of clone s, I'm always filling trays.
I also popped popped some beans tonight. I'm super excited about these:

Went to the rental for the first time in about a week. I really could use another light in between the mothers I decided to flower out. They are so much taller than the rest that they are getting almost no direct light. Here are some shots of the circles over there:
Its hard to really see what's going on here, just looks like a jungle

I hydrated some coco for the beds. I'm starting to second guess taking on a new project like this when I really should have been perfecting what I already have going on. Kind of late now. things are already in motion, so I will see it through and sink or swim. The clones are pretty much ready to fill it , I just have to plumb the irrigation and screw in the bulbs...and probably add a bit more coco.

First flat grow. I was given these magnum xls , so I thought I'd put them to use and try to replicate some beds. They are the only thing horizontal that has kept my attention
