Botanists might disagree, but, to me, veg starts as soon as it pokes its little head out of the soil (unless started under 12/12 light schedule). You can transplant at any time, even during flowering (but I don't know of any reason why anyone would wait that long). I would wait until the roots have almost, or have just filled, the container.

Your plant won't need nutrients until the second set of leaves. Until then, everything it needs is in the seed. At that time, be ready to transplant into a mild soil, or transplant and feed hydroponically. My plants seem to take approx 2 weeks in the beer cups. If you plant in a clear beer cup and cover it with a colored one, you can check for roots without disturbing the plant. Most people transplant two or three times before flowering.

decisions to be made. hydro or soil?

A tip on transplanting: Line every container with 3 or 4 layers of barrier cloth for flower beds. The container will more easily separate from the rootball and the rootball can be easily moved in its sack of barrier cloth. This cloth is then easily separated from the rootball and continue transplant as normal. This keeps the rootball from being ripped apart getting it out of the container and gives better control of the operation.

A tip on watering: Get a moisture meter from the nursery and let it go all the way to the dry side of the scale. Halfway will overwater, stunt growth, and turn the leaves such a bright shade of fluorescent green that you can light the room with them.

Another tip: ph'ed water. Don't underestimate this.

Read the stickies at the top of the forums. Most issues have already been addressed.

Hope this helps. Keep it as simple and reliable as possible. Precisely dial in your environment. Don't go cheap at any time and don't add a lot of crap to your plants. Those people generally populate the infirmary section.

Have a nice day. bg

Thanks guys useful information. I bought the grow bible and seems a little vague on subjects. More factual notes than anything.

Ooterz, there's ton of stuff to read here. You don't need a book. Look at the stickies at the top of the indoor soil growers. Look at my post it has a good one. You need to study up on soils, vegging etc.

that looks pretty good!

that container might be a little big; what i do to prevent over-watering in a larger container/smaller plant is just wet around the plant and let the edges of the container be dry

it would be similar to just spray the surface w/ a sprayer

Before I started growing, I bought a stack of books a foot tall. A lot of the info in them is rather dated. A lot of it is pure garbage. The good info is in Hank's link. Read and memorize it all. You'll refer back to it in the future.

Have a nice day. bg

Well I have the tote cracked about an inch on one side. It seems to pull my flame from my lighter. I still have to finish the bottom part of the tote, cut my intake hole out
