What fish is that masa , Trevelly ? if thats how you pronounce it . Look good enough to eat .

Its just another member of the grouper family, not sure of its proper name, got lots of different types of groupers swimming around here.. Those got caught in the tide and trapped inside the reef,,the big monster fish hunt in the deep just outside the reef.

Reckon that gecko's gonna need a drink to wash that down! Fish looks good though- rapalas certainly do the biz, great for bass in our waters.

I would have pegged the fish for a snapper of some sort. I think you likely also see parrotfishes (a type of wrasse, pronounced rass) and surgeonfishes, which are also called commonly tang. And I hear tang is very good eating. <insert big grin of absolution here>

I didn't comment on the gecko because I always comment on the geckos. Figured maybe I should let someone else have the gecko-love. If it's a baby, I'd like to see the adults. We already know Tokays are nothing to be trifled with. It occurred to me that you likely have at least one species of monitor lizard on that island, too. You know, the animals related to Komodo dragons? Saw some big monitors out on Guam. They're FAST! or I would have tried to catch one.

So your tortillas are made almost like crepes, a very thin batter cooked in a hot pan? Sounds intriguing.
That prehistoric wasp-thingy looked almost as big as that baby gecko. Must have taken him a while to choke it down, wiggling all the way...

So I imagine you do all your cooking over hardwood? Maybe some wood charcoal that was carbonized from previous cooks? Adds a nice smokey flavor to your foods. Fresh fish from the ocean, roasted over a wood fire, dish like that would set you back 10-30 bucks in a restaurant in America. Your price: free.

Grown man couldn't ask for much more than that...

Good eatin huh ??? ya dont say...
Yea lots of parrot fish,, triggers of all sorts sizes and colors,,,one of the coolest things I like about snorkeling here is when ya hit the water its a meter deep so as soon as ya get to the edge of the reef you spot little colorful fish about 3-4 inches long and as you get deeper you see the same kinds of fish only now their about 7-8 long,,and so It goes for a 00 meter or so until you get past the reef and now your swimming in 6 meter deep water with the adult fish,,,I guess whats cool for me is they look the same from baby to adult. And yea ,,most are "Tasty"..

Ok the lil lizard,,,yes Its a Monitor, check out his red toes, the piks bad I know but you can see the shape of his head,,when they get bigger the head looks T-Rex'ish,,they live in packs at the edge of the swampy areas way up river and are very aggressive, will eat anything it can catch,,,pigs, kids,,chicken,,,fish. They get shiny black with big ass bright red toes and grow about 4 feet in length.
Ive only seen them up river, and they seem to stay up there, any time one gets spotted in the open in hunted and killed ,,,first off because its a dangerous animal and will without question grab a small kid and run off with it,,,or at the least a small pig or some chickens,,,they stay up river for reason,,,a venture down river may be the last...
They also make for some good earing.
We figure this guy got caught in the storm and ended up this way..

Side note to SM,,,,
As a senior member of the crew I think the younger members look for you to ask more question,, you have a taste of what its like to live in a different environmental and culture and more important you always offer up a new direction for the thread to run off into..:tiphat:

Yea the tortillas are good eating, their called , "Pani" (Pa-ni), and anything made from rice or corn flour is called "Pani", and best translates to "bread".. Most huts will have um during evening meals,,a pile is made up and used as a side "munch" eat rice meat and fish with your left hand while holding "pani" in your left.
The corns the best and I eat um as is right out of the pan,,my wifes mother finds out where Im at BEFORE she starts making the corn pani,,, she's to nice to tell me ta piss off and I'll sit there and eat um as she's making um...

All our cooking is done on wood and charcoal,,When we first set up shop here we went with a small gas 2 burner stove,,nice lil German made unit,, Just about every smuggling boat that comes through here carries LPG tanks of some size so getting gas wouldn't be a big deal,,get 3-4 tanks and rotate.. First it was the price going sky high,,,but we still paid, than a storm cut us off from everything for 4 months,, that's when fruit bats,,ground snails and monkey meat, starts looking mighty good,, shit who am I kidding ,,,I like monkey meat...
Charcoal is purposefully made,,, when a hill side is cut and burned before the burning all the wood is gathered in big piles and covered with banana leaves and then dirt,, a hole in the dirt is left at the bottom and top,,then some hot coals are put in the bottom hole,,,3-4 days later the entire pile is blacken charcoal takes 3-4 more days to cool off,, threes a hand full of guys who are charcoal makers,,, that's their function,,,,they don't cut plant harvest or fish but do get a full share.. If ya ask me Id rather farm or fish...

I was wondering if it was Rango (I'm lizard identification impaired).

No this is Rango having one hell of a meal,,,I was sitting here chillin watching you tube shit when all of a sudden a SCREAM came from behind me in the tool hut,,my lil fort is hooked to it.. I get up to see WTF and I find Rango having a go at a nice meal,,,the frogs screaming bloody murder as Rango slams the frogs head into the wall subduing the frog more so he could get a better bit on him,,,and the frog wasn't gonna give up ,,,he had his back legs in the jaws of a bag ass tuko a was still trying to get away,,,it took an hour for the noise to die down,,, I knew they ate big ass bugs,,but I've never seen one eat a frog before...

I only got a few piks cause I could tell I was bothering him and I didn't wanna ruin his meal

Yea the boys getting better ,,was just a bunch of fotos of his feet...

Wow, you've even got charcoal makers. That's a pretty advanced economy you have on the islands. Interesting.
That's funny that Rango ate a frog. Isn't that like eating his cousin or something? They don't care.
Slamming its head into the wall to subdue it? That poor frog, lol. Being eaten alive over the course of an hour. That's Nature for you. Everything eats something else.
Bet Rango didn't have to eat for a week after that...

Just wanted to stop and hit the tube for a bit,, take a lil break...
Been learning how to make a dug out boat small paddle style,,I want something I can get up into the shallows of the rivers and carry past low water areas up to deeper water,,then explore whats way up there. To do this I need something small and strong,,small cause im not looking to drag a heavy ass wooden boat, and strong so it can get dragged around some and take a few mangrove tree hits. Theres still a lot of area I havent been to yet,,and going up river into the shallows is one of them.

Is that cephalopod stew?

I guess thats about the best translation for it,its small squid, some spices and a few peppers for some zing, it is dam tasty with a bowl of rice....

Man that occy looks good.

Do you run cattle under the coconut trees?

No I only have 3 cows, a bull that gets separation anxiety and a water buffalo..
They all roam free in the area of my house the cows hang out in a shelter at night,,natives said I spoiled my cows, and now the other cows will want a shelter,,, my buffalo prefers to lay in a 4 foot deep mud pit until its time to hitch him up and do some dragging or pulling,,, I of course call him ,,,John.

Does everyone on the island drink kava? One time I showed up to marry some Fijians. After the wedding the men chased all the women off to the kitchen and started to pass around little cups of tea. I couldn't make out what they were calling it. They sort of sheepishly offered me a cup and not wanting to look like a puss I shot it down in one gulp. Tasted like bitter dirt. They all sort of smiled at each other, like all right we're getting the rev fucked up! Not wanting to be rude I accepted the second, slurping it a bit slower. Than I realized my mouth was numb and my ass had gained ten pounds. And I figured it out.

In veg, I use 12 on, 5.5 off, 1 on, 5.5 off. The plants do not go into flower, and grow just as well, if not a little better, than 24 on 0 off. This is an old commercial greenhouse technique. I'm betting that the light bulb manufacturers and electric companies don't want this to be common knowledge. So, masamaaso, just 1 hour during your dark cycle, would be sufficient.

Thanks for the tips. We have been using the balikbayan boxes to supply her family with anything my wife finds on sale, at a garage sale, etc. Plus I throw in some tools and chocolate in each box for the boys and kids. The Philippines has a special deal for foreigners that are bringing $$$ and retiring there. I can stuff a shipping container with 1 car and my stuff, for greatly reduced duty.
