Kit Kat's OG Kush Donuts

right on KitKat! that's great for 20 days of progress for your plants. Might need to check out blumats now because I'm such a lazy and stoned gardener. And I can see they are no fad

Very nice, Kit Kat. I'm looking forward to seeing how you end up managing the increasing density of plant material and keep the plants from overwhelming each other and the light. My next grow will be a vertical attempt, and I struggle with the desire to keep it simple and without excess infrastructure. I like Ichabod's screens, but man that's a lot of PVC.

Sounds like you got the Blumats dialed in?

Thanks woop, I highly recommend giving those blumats a look - $80 for the patio kit and you'll have everything I'm using here. Then you can be even lazier!

I appreciate it, komboloi. The keep it simple desire is how I started this one out, although if I had the time and space and could start over, I'd do Ichabod's screens. Tonight I hope to stake them up and create a flat plane as Ichabod suggested earlier, and it is definitely needed - unfortunately the pictures don't show, but unless I do something there are going to be a lot of otherwise nice branches that are going to churn out crap bud, it's pretty obvious already.

On the plus side they've all fleshed out some nice tops and the tri-stake method should be sufficient to get them all in good positions.

Blumats seem to be dialed in nicely, none of the plants have shown any water stress signs. I occassionally have a half gallon or so puddle around one of them where they overflow, but that's because just one standard carrot for a 2g airpot I think isn't enough. They ought to be maxis.

Day 19 flower shots, from the phone again, can't find my actual camera. Holidays and work ended up getting really busy so I still haven't had a chance to stake them in a more efficient pattern yet.

Bulbs were dropped to try and halt some of the stretch, they certainly aren't getting as tall quickly now. Definitely happy with how they're coming along so far though.

Day 22, staked everything using Ichabod's suggestion (thanks!) and pulled a bunch of sucker branches. Definitely going to be using screens next time, this turned out to be a huge pain in the ass.

I can not tell what you are using to tie with. A while back Marlo suggested using pipe cleaners to tie with. If you use the white ones come harvest time it is easier to find them and removed them. I used his suggesting and it works great and is less of a PITA to harvest.

Great diary, KK. I appreciate having all the info about your set up (variety, pots, medium, lights, days in veg, etc.) right up front, and your updates are great. Keep up the good work.

Good to know that you think screens would be worth the trouble. Also, this is a good advertisement for going vertical. If these plants were being grown horizontal, you'd have some serious height issues or would have been forced to do lots of training/topping.

Thanks shapes!

I actually popped into a craft store to pick up pipe cleaners since they'd be easy to see and work with, but unfortunately someone had come in minutes prior and cleaned the place out. I'm using standard green garden wire in here, and I've already caused myself issues getting hung up on it.

Been thinking about just getting the horticulture tape gun you use, it looks even easier, especially if starting out with screens instead of sorta jamming it around after the fact like I am.

Thanks komboloi! I think I'm going to clean up the OP a bit and make it even clearer, and glad it's helpful - keeps me motivated not to slack. I came pretty close to not bothering to use the stakes and just letting it run out, but the thought of posting that made me go eeeeeeh. After having the difficulty trying to fill the canopy in evenly and simply just WORK in there without having to bathe in olive oil afterwards I'll always use screens from here on out.

Speaking of training, my five rejects ended up getting flowered anyways after an extensive LST and stem crushing veg period because it ended up getting so cold here I needed to run 600 during the day just to keep the room warm. I was originally going to scrog it (never actually done that before) but completely missed the point... should've put out the screen, let it grow into it, then started training. I think these pics are five days old, and they're about a week behind in flowering on the vert.

I just plumbed blumats in there last night after they started requiring hand watering every day. Turned off the control valve at the res, added a T, then hooked up another loop for these five. Control valve is a must on the res, really makes troubleshooting way easier.

Just reminded me... I had my first blumat issue the other evening, I was rooting around plucking leaves and noticed one of my ladies in the far back right was pretty droopy. When I lifted the pot it was light as hell and some of the buds closest to the light had crisped pretty hard (this was before I staked them all, and a huge impetus into why I did). When I finally wriggled my way in there I saw a mound of roots had slowly grown up under the drip tube, then inside the tube itself - clogging it completely.

Thankfully I had heeded sunnydog's advice and kept some carrots soaking in water, so I was able to handwater the poor lass, replace the sensor (the 3mm tube was a loss, I spent like 30 stoned minutes trying to tweeze out those fuckin' roots) and she's back to being happy as can be.

While I was getting the T shot I ended up taking a few others, here's an updated pic of the horizontal and some gratuitous shots of the workspace:

Definitely have a bowl with blumats, saved my ass!

I don't even peek anymore without using my welding goggles. They're kind of a huge pain in the ass, I'd definitely like to get a less awkward set sometime.

I get my pipe cleaners at Walmart in the craft section.

I also like the tomato clips better than the tape gun or pipe cleaners.

The clips are easier to remove and put on. This makes it easy to move during stretch and at harvest. By far the best way I know to tie to screens.

Whoa, these clips look amazing, and they're pretty cheap to boot. Thanks for the tip, I just ordered a bag of five hundred for twenty and I'll get in there and redo everything when they arrive. (Nearest Walmart is like, sixty miles from me, we don't do Walmart in these parts ;p )

And because I'm in a picture taking mood here's my hilariously inefficient watering set up

My RO system is downstairs since I'm paranoid of another flood, definitely don't want it happening upstairs. So I fill a five gallon jug with RO in the sink in case I get lit and forget (happens often enough) so the excess runs down the drain.

Then each bottle gets measured out, jug is capped, twisted a time or two to mix it, then the next added in. Now that I've done this enough it only takes a couple of minutes and is a perfect little chore to do when the coffee is steeping. Carry the sucker up the stairs, dump into the trashcan and stick back in the sink to refill.

Totally inefficient.

Spent some time reading a few photography and picture editing threads, so hopefully the shot quality starts improving here soon.

This is day 21 for the horizontal OGK under a 600w that runs during the day, mainly to keep the larger vertical tent from dropping under 72 when lights are off. They're about a week behind, originally these were all the rejects.

I've also got some kind of flying bug cruising around in there. I crushed up some mosquito dunks and drop dressed with them, hand watered it in for about 10 days and stuck a yellow strip up, but they're still fucking around in there. Never encountered this before, what should I be looking for? Anyone have suggestions on clearing them out, or does it not matter?

I top dress with the dunks then turn the exhaust fans off for several nights with no pest strips on the floor fans. I triple the amount of them needed because they only work when enough vapor from them has built up in the air. About a half half hour before lights come on the exhaust fans turn back on. This will take a few days to kill the flyers.

If the don't fly away from you when you are in the room they are most likely fungus nats. If they fly away and hide they are most likely root aphids.

Another thing you can do is place a white bucket with soapy water under your light. The white blinds them and they fall into the water. You can then pull one out and scope it to tell what you have.

Turning the exhaust off at night isn't going to cause a problem (besides some rising rH)? If so, I have some Hot-Shot no pest strips sitting around and I'll definitely do this.

I just went and poked around in there and they're pretty lazy fliers... they don't hide if I disturb them and generally just float around the place like they own it, or something.

Edit: I'll try the bucket thing too, I have a clean 3 gallon sitting around not doing anything.

Thanks y'all, I appreciate the good vibes.

Day 28 now, and since stretch stopped a week sooner than I was anticipating I dropped one of the veg weeks from the H&G schedule and will be using Top Booster through next Friday. Really hasn't been a whole lot to do once they were staked up.

Just sorta stuck the camera in there for these

These pictures are from two days ago, on day 40. Today is day 42, end of week six. All of week six I've been using shooting powder at 13g per 5g of water, first adjusting A/B to 1.0EC (6ml/gal each), pH to 5.8 with ProTekt (3ml/g) then Bud-XL (4ml/g) and finally mixing the shooting powder in warm RO and adding it last. EC comes to 1.5 and pH goes from 5.8 to 6.2 after this.

The US site nutrient schedule originally called for 11.5ml/g of A&B + shooting powder which is just nuts - my final EC would have been 2.5 easy and I have no idea why that recommendation is there. Next run I'm already planning on cutting A&B back by a quarter of recommended since some dark green leaves were starting to appear towards the end of week five, there is just too much N in the H&G schedule. Unfortunately I was getting a bit lazy and didn't notice until it had progressed along a bit, so I've likely stunted them right as the powder started.

And thank you, Ichabod! I managed to pick up two Hot Shot Pest Strips and stuck them on a circulating fan with the exhaust turned off for a couple of nights and a vast majority of the population was wiped out. I stuck them into a few zip lock bags in case they come back in force, if so, I'll do it again.
