It should be fine. Flexible PVC is the problem material , not Polyethylene.

Hmm, maybe I'm using something different. I've had a flexible pvc on the walls,ceiling and floor for a while and had no problems. This stuff has great reflectivity and fire resistant. Check it out.

All flexible vinyl contains plasticizers that are nasty. Not all flexible vinyls are formulated so poorly that the plasticizers migrate and off gas dangerously. Strong odor is a sure sign of trouble.
