What's new

is there a way to encourage females from seed?

My concern with coaxing a borderline plant into one sex or the other in veg hours , is that it reverts later in flower under 12/12 regime or other floweroom stress.

Would try manipulateing environment to maximise males , on the reasoning that those girls left are more stable.
:yeahthats

Never had any 'surprises' when I ran things this way myself. Well said. :)

Concerning cannabis, B.R. Lazarenko and I.B. Gorbatovoskaya announced:

"Reports that the characteristics acquired by the plants in electrically treated soils are transmitted by inheritance to the third generation are particularly interesting.
"Under the influence of the electrical current, the numerical proportions between hemp plants of different sexes was changed by comparison with the control to give an increased number of female plants by 20-25%, in conection with a reduction in the intensity of the oxidative processes in the plant tissues." Foomar I have maximized males haha that's all I got males and now I need to minimize the male ratio ..so all information is good, good or bad and a little experience is the best recipe.
Trichrome101 what?
Trichrider I like that article, thanks for the reference.

I've used bits and pieces of Straw's methods for years and i've been pleased with the results, no gluts of males, mostly female majorities in the 6-7/10 range.

Only real way i know to get more girls is to simply plant more seed and cull more males , restricted a little in rootspace and light intensity almost every plant shows sex at or around nine nodes/ 28 days from seed under 20/4 lights at nine per square foot.

F2 everything promiseing and pop 30 for at least 10 girls most of the time , if you can arrange the extra veg space.

If you are working with retail ten packs i share the desire for more girls but it really is a matter of probability and very random with such low numbers and often three outcomes includeing non viable.

Been following the Dutch Passion article so to speak for years and rarely get more than 2/10 males. I hate HPS and haven't used one ever in veg and only use CMH in most all phases. IDK - Just my experience. Had a rash of hermies with Reeferman's junk, but with quite a few other strains like 70-80% females easy. Was frustrating for at times when I was actually hoping for a good male........

Probably only a few hundred seeds or so though. Someone I know will use the same seed stock and due to high temps and his "apprentice" skill set and status he/she runs around 50%.

SS...it's an old debate. Some say yes, some say no. It wasn't my intent to start the argument all over again, but was in response to the OP's question about the number of males that seemed to dominate he was popping. I posted the old OG/DP/Strawdog post with the options he could try with some or all of the methods at his discretion. As I said, I take neither side, it was just an FYI he could do with however he wanted.

Peace!

Messn' - I don't have the background to argue on genetics or this topic in general! Just what experience I have had. I am a green thumbed electrical and mechanical geek. So environment and way healthy plants are easy for me, but genetics and why we get a certain ratio are beyond me...... To be honest, I was taught to follow the Low Temp veg, blue light veg, moist/wet root zone, high N and low K regimine by someone when I first started. He is a super green thumb and lives in some crazy symbiotic web with the earth and his plants. I swear he could grow one in his pocket! So I stuck with what he said.

Peace to all in 2013! Many kind regards,

Azeo

Azeo - I've noticed that most of those who pop dozen's, if not hundreds, of seeds at a time say that it doesn't work for them, But, most of those who pop a couple dozen or less at a time say they have noticed a difference.

Without any kind of science, notes, etc. to back it up; I have never had less than 50% success at any one time and probably average about 60% overall, when popping 4-8 seeds. Even then, I don't think it hurts the seeds any, one way or the other. But, I do it anyway...just in case! ;)

Florel = ethephon = estrogen for plants. Same product used to reverse males so they flower so they can be tested in a lab. Supposedly, if u soak the seeds in it before germ it will increase the female ratio, etc. I HAVE NEVER DONE THE SEED SOAK NOR DO I HAVE PROOF IT WORKS but it has been suggested to me more than once bu more than 1 person.
