My DIY LED grow light

Well I'm using dwc and temps are never issue for me.I have noticed that when I change feed at 600ppm purple stems do not show up.Once I'm going below close to 450ppm purple stems start to show up. This has happened with Super lemon haze ak48,flower x jack, bublecious, suber bud. What's going on here ??? From my experience and his is only my opinion - purple stems are sign of deficiency.

Well, it might be some sign of deficiency if the pH is not in the adequate range, as this chart indicates :

attachment.php

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency: Magnesium deficiency will exhibit a yellowing (which may turn brown) and interveinal chlorosis beginning in the older leaves. The older leaves will be the first to develop interveinal chlorosis. Starting at leaf margin or tip and progressing inward between the veins....This can be quickly resolved by watering with 1 tablespoon Epsom salts/gallon of water. Until you can correct nutrient lockout, try foliar feeding. That way the plants get all the nitrogen and Mg they need. The plants can be foliar feed at ½ teaspoon/quart of Epsom salts (first powdered and dissolved in some hot water). When mixing up soil, use 2 teaspoon dolomite lime per gallon of soil.
If the starting water is above 200 ppm, that is pretty hard water, that will lock out mg with all of the calcium in the water. Either add a 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of epsom salts or lime both will effectively reduce the lockout.Mg can get locked-up by too much Ca, Cl or ammonium nitrogen. Don't overdo Mg or you'll lock up other nutrients.

Phosphorus (P) deficiency:Fan leaves are dark green or red/purple, and may turn yellow. Leaves may curl under, go brown and die. Small-formed buds are another main symptom.
Phosphorus deficiencies exhibit slow growing, weak and stunted plants with dark green or purple pigmentation in older leaves and stems.
Some deficiency during flowering is normal, but too much shouldn't be tolerated. Red petioles and stems are a normal, genetic characteristic for many varieties, plus it can also be a co-symptom of N, K, and Mg-deficiencies, so red stems are not a foolproof sign of P-deficiency. Too much P can lead to iron deficiency.
Purpling: accumulation of anthocyanin pigments; causes an overall dark green color with a purple, red, or blue tint, and is the common sign of phosphate deficiency. Some plant species and varieties respond to phosphate deficiency by yellowing instead of purpling. Purpling is natural to some healthy ornamentals.

Many thanks hempfield for that chart-it's a part of hydro bible with nutrient deficiency chart :) PH and lack of food might be causes of them purple stems. My Ph always drifts up overnight and when there is little food left Ph is going down but that didn't happened for long time now. 20L tank is too small and ph drifts too easily.

Mike sorry for thread hijack

Something on topic. Plants grown under leds might like some of nutrients more than others. Are you adding anything additional to your feed ? Let say couple millilitres of "P" or magnesium or any other additive.

Hi All:

I use Fox Farm products which are the tri-pack of Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz and Cha-Ching.

So far, for the past two weeks, I've been giving them the Open Sesame which is 5-45-19. Yesterday, I started with the Beastie Bloomz which is 0-50-30. The Cha-Ching won't be for around 2 -3 weeks from now, I'll have to see how it goes but that is 9-50-10.

I bottom feed the girls but every few days I will get the sprayer out and before spraying with PH balanced water, I will take a tablespoon or two of 'Beetle shit"........yes... that's what I was told it was beetleshit.......I sprinkle that around the base of the plants and the spray water until it's well drenched into the soil.......

That's it, that's all.........I don't see any type of deficiency developing on the girls. I may be way off here but I don't see the purpling of the stems being an issue or else I would think that some other signs would be evident as well..

Thank you for posting and commenting as always..:)

I'm using Canna Agua A+B which is 6-3-8 . At the moment I'm tempted to change for Aadvanced Nutrients. Any other recommendations ?
I have AN for flowering and I'm more than happy with it's performance so far. Let's see what the harvest will be like.

Vukman- I'm not saying that there is something wrong with your plant :)

Most of the people are saying "some strains are like that" "too cold" to me these statements are easy way off from the case. As I have said in my previous post, keeping food level above 600ppm and there are no purple leaves for me(under DSpectrum) but that's not the case for LED light :-(

Just a bit of an update here gang............I'm waiting for an order to come in. I bought a bunch of ratchet light hangers off Ebay so waiting for that to change the light design of the tent around.

I plan on angling the retail bought lights diagonally across the corners and then my HML in the middle of them all........

That's the plan anyway...let's see how it goes and if my cheap-ass electrical system will handle it.. It should but only time will tell. That will give me an approx wattage in the tent of around 1200W....probably more like 1050-1100W if you remove the fan draw.....hmm, driver inefficiency .......maybe 1000W.

You know I'll put the whole system on the tester when it's up and running....damn postal system..LOL...can't get shit here quick enough!!

Thank you all for posting, reading, lurking..etc..etc..You are the reason I keep on posting.......thank you

Looks great vukman!!! When I first started doing my research I was going to go with led's but after hundreds of hours of research I just wasn't convinced that in a 5x5 foot print a led could produce the same bud that a 1000W Gavita could. Maybe a 1000W of led but then that would have defeated the purpose for me. Plus costed huge. I think one day once I can get consistant enough with my growing I'd like to try a side by side with say 600W of led versus 1000W of Gavita. But I think I'm at least half a year away from being competent enough for that:laughing:

Looking forward to your end results!!!!

Now now...let's be fair here brother.. I was talking more about a regular HID, not the Gavita..:D..

That would definitely have to be a 1000 LED to the 1000 Gavita to be fair....heheh..

Your grow is going to kick ass!!

5 or 600 watts of XM-L HML should do the trick.

I'm still at the cheapo stage of my testing my friend so I have absolutely no experience with the high-end chips such as Osram or Phillips. I hope to be there soon. I probably have to go through one or two more development stages with the Chinese 'cheapo' LED chips before I can get my hands on some good brand name chips.

I have no doubt that you're more than likely right. I didn't take the brand names even into consideration but the proof is in the pudding, as the old saying goes....Just look at the spec sheets and that should be enough to convince people.

Then again, I would say there is a difference between 600W of 3W chips and 600W of 5W chips too. The lux/lumen/PAR readings, which I haven't checked, would probably be different...........hmmmmmmmm..that gives me something to work on today even if it is on paper..heheh.....thanks bro!!!! :D

3 weeks into flower.

3 weeks into flower.

Hi gang:

This post really doesn't have anything to do with my DIY HML but I just wanted to let you all know what's going on.

I'm waiting for the ratchet hangers which are coming tomorrow via courier (The Brown Guys).<<<<<heheh.

I've set up the LEDs I have here but waiting for the final set-up tomorrow when I'll place my light in the middle of the canopy and the retail panels will be placed on angles. Basically like the panels which are hanging on the sides now but in a more uniform manner.

If you can picture a retail panel in each corner with my HML in the middle. I want it there so I can use the white light from it to keep an eye on what the leaves are doing.. It's hard with that reddish glow in there now...

Yes, it will be around 1200W in there then. Experimenting as usual. I obviously wont be able to judge what the gr/w will be but.......there's always next time for that.. This experimenting is more important I think.

I know one thing and that is if I don't 'burn' the plants, I'm gonna have some real frosty-ass bud..:D

Hi gang:

Sorry about this but I got into it with UPS.. Their drivers no longer accept cash. The brokerage fees were $16 and he couldn't accept it so I have to get the damn thing redirected (just down the street to the UPS store) which will take them....ready....1-2 business days to do this!!!

WTF??! I always thought that COD meant cash on delivery.. I guess I was wrong...

So the placement of the HML is going to have to wait until I get the ratchet hangers....hopefully I get the call today that they're at the store.

Anyway folks...just a few pictures from today (Tuesday Dec 4/12)
