Myths about growing that you've proven false?

I wanted to see if anyone has ever experienced the busting of myths when it comes to growing? There are a lot old folk tales out there that are based on older methods that are just outdated now, and I would be interested in hearing any thoughts on the subject.

I can start I guess... I just setup a small 2x2 grow tent (dr60) that has a 400w mh/hps in there. I'd been reading a lot about this specific combination for many weeks prior to making the purchase, and the overwhelming response all over the Web was that it couldn't be done easily. That a 400w would create too much heat.

Oh, there's more... Also, I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money on an exhaust fan, because I didn't need a carbon filter in the tent, so I figured I could give one of those duct booster fans a try, see how they do. I researched this for weeks and the overwhelming responses from people everywhere were that those fans are pieces of shit, they are a waste of money, they are ONLY good for boosting long duct runs. Long story short, I bought one, and it is working just beautifully!

So, in one go, I've busted 2 myths... 400 watt HIDs actually DO work with 2x2 tents, and they can even be air-cooled by a twenty dollar booster fan! I keep my house temperature at 77 degrees all of the time, whether by air conditioning or opening windows, and the tent so far has stayed at 79.5 degrees, right where the plants are.

Anyone else ever bust any growing myths?

The first myth to bust is the importance of bigger bulbs, with a part B being leds v any other bulbs

I am using a 2 X 4 tent, with 2 x 2 dedicated to one plant. The other side has equipment and a cloner

I am using a 3 yo ufo 90, whose spectrums are R/B ~ 8:1. To this I added a vanity light bar with Y adapters to angle low watt leds toward my main plant and my clone bubbler.

The light bar is positioned right where the ufo penetration stops.

Rough total watts 80-90 max.

This pic is from my other tent with HOT5 top light only. Notice the lower bd development is OK, but nothing like the LED tent

Low watt multi- led panels rock
. There is a grow on another mj grow site that I sort of copied as a test. His system will be available soon www.astirgrow.com

Coco needs to be kept moist and needs runoff . My best yeilds came from letting dry out zero runoff .

400w in a 2x2 is fine... lots of micro boxes have been that small, a tent isn't any different.

As for 79.5 degrees? You'd get better quality cheaply with a real fan or by spending a fortune on keeping your house cooler. IME... anything over 72F and you're really impacting the quality of your end product.

Oh, well keep in mind, I said I keep my house at 77 degrees, so the point was that the tent is only 2.5 degrees above ambient. My wife gets cold easily so I have to keep it that warm. That's why I mainly grow sativa dominant strains, mostly Mandala seeds, that prefer this temperature.

Thanks though, generally that is the best advice, I agree!

I have friends that will pull and toss plants that have alternating nodes because they swear they are males. I gave one some female seed and they pulled them all. Since they are idiots and idiots are dangerous. I have never shown them my gardens. I took them a couple of whole plants to show them different growth patterns. And they swore that the ones with alternating nodes were hermies. I quit trying and left them to their foolishness years ago. And I love how people still float their seeds and toss the ones that eventually sink.

72F will affect not only the quality, but the weight.. My plants slow down with anything lower than 78f, which is widely accepted as the fastest temp for transpiration w/o co2..

You dont agree with this?

Depending on strain, high temps can evaporate off volatile terpenes, certainly effecting quality.

Good on you!

I've busted a few.
High humidity causes powdery mildew.
You can't spray your buds with anything late in flower.
Spraying buds with water knocks trichomes off.
You can't feed your plants with urine and expect a good result.
You can't bottom-feed in coco.

What else....? Lemme think about it and I'll get back to ya. :D I'm a rule-breaker, a tester, an annoyance and some might say completely fucking delusional. Yet, I manage, somehow, to produce something worthwhile.

plants in dirt and coco can sit in water/nutrients their whole life and flourish

also mixed rockwool mini croutons with dirt .. works great

rdwc, dirt and coco without any ph adjusting

Okay....... Don't want a pissin' match but, I have to say it...... They myth that LED lighting can compete with higher wattage HID! Sorry, just not there yet. May be in about 20yrs.
