product needed that softens the shell on old seeds

I have never seen teas or special products for seed germination. But you may find the following information useful....In the presence of red light and infrared light some seeds, such as tomato seeds, are known to produce bioactive chemicals called gibberellins (GAs) which promote seed germination. In dicotyledenous plants (that is, plants whose seeds have two embryonic leaves), dicots for short, such as the tomato, the GA promotes the growth potential of the embryo and weakens the structures surrounding the embryo. Really interested to know if mj responds in this manner!
When warmth, water, and oxygen become available a seed begins to germinate. The embryonic plant begins to grow and the seed coat swells and breaks open under the pressure of the growing seedling within the shell.
I would suggest using warm water....as most have said...just water!

You can get an enzyme product that will dissolve the outer shell, leaving the embryo intact.

lol preferably a product meant for seeds i mean

I thoroughly recommend Harrys Highgrade chai infusion seed sprouting solution.
It looks, smells, and feels exactly like a normal teabag from a box of Yorkshire Tea;), except its 20 pounds for 5 teabags and comes with a glossy leaflet filled with psuedo-scientific bullshit, false promises and hydro industry buzzwords.

Shaking with the sand paper is kind of a pain and you feel ridiculous doing it. When you are done you ask yourself if it really did anything. Then again I never gave it a full 5 minutes. I just scuff the seed a couple times where the two shells meet together, like someone already mentioned.

I've heard of people using match boxes to scuff up the seeds, and obviously sandpaper has been mentioned. After that I would just take a clear glass with 1 inch of purified water and set it on top of your cable boxes warm spot, make sure to agitate the water a few times during the first 24 hours. Seeds will float on top, then sink, then pop.....

it's actually a age old technique that mimic's the life cycle of a seed.... that has been eaten by birds and passes thru there digestive system .... to soften the husk...
lay in the bird poop germinate AND BEGIN AGAIN......

If that's the case, then he should buy a parakeet...

Bro, if you have 50 seeds, just put 10 of them in a glass of water and see what happens. Then you don't have to worry about all that other crap. If the first 10 pop, then you're good. If not, then try some more drastic measures, remembering all the while that there is no guarantee that 10 year old seeds will germ.

i dont want to transplant the seeds into the plugs after they pop

They are a very small company;), just a startup really.

This is just the kind of investment opportunity I've been looking for. Harry, your 'tea' sounds like a unique product that has the potential to revolutionize/solve the old-seed splitting dilemma. I have a few thousand $$$ that I'd like to invest to get your project up and running. Please PM me and let me know where to send my check and let's get cracking!!!

Oh, and TREE KING--I Googled it also and didn't get jack-shit (I think Harry is keeping it hush-hush until he has the wholesale distributors signed up). While we are waiting for HG's product to become available I suggest you just put those little old beans between your teeth and bite down just a tad. Works for me

What plugs? You asked for a way to "soften" seeds for germination. The obvious answer is water. Water first, then plugs, if you must. Once they crack, I put them straight into their medium. If they aren't going to crack in water, they aren't going to crack. They would have to have been refrigerated/frozen first to last that long, unless you get very lucky.

starter plugs. i had a bad experience in the past doing that and everything suffocated and died after transplant. from now on i soak them while there still in the plugs for 12 hours. i know i can probably do it and be successful but i dont wanna stray away from how i usually do it cause i dont wanna take a chance with these seeds there important to me. sometime in the future il practice on some freebies
