question on watts

I have a 1000 watt switchable that I am currently using for a 6 plant flowering cycle, and a 175 watt mh for the clones I cut from the 6. My question is will it be worth my time if I veg for 1 month under the 175 watt then go right into 12/12 under the 1k hps? Is that 175watt gonna be enough? my grow space for the 175 is about 4x2.

i dont think 175 will be enough, i justswitch from a 400w to a 600w in the veg room.. great results! but i have a 4.5 X 4.5 X 72 tent.

I disagree with homeboy.

175 watts of MH power will be plenty to veg out 6 smallish plants.

Proper flowering takes a whole lot more energy than proper vegging... you'll be fine going from the 175 in veg to 1000 in flo... actually its probably pretty close to ideal all factors considered.

ok smallish.. i started with low wattage but could not produce vigorous growth, did not have enough canopy penetration and really had to watch my watering.. i see how it would work for a micro grow but not enough. why start smallish plats then throw them under a 1000w? 4 x 2 .. what is the height of your room?

huh? whats considered smallish or large(ish) im new here so ready to learn.. my experiance did not produce anything exciting under low wattage.. i guess im missing something. this is something i love and went to school for(botany) 175 for clones (perfect) but for veg? really? maybe im vegging to long? vegging for 1 month is that enough?

Watts per square foot of canopy/floor space is what we are concerned about... I'm surprised they didn't teach you that in Botany School.

As a loose guideline:
Vega= 20 W/Sq.Ft
Flower= 50 W/Sq.Ft

So, for veg, a 175W MH will cover about 9 Sq.Ft..... perfect for the 4x2(8 Sq.Ft) that the OP is using.

It should be fine, just not as fast. I like to do a fast veg under 1k then put them under 2k for bloom. But i use clones n prefer a 1-2week veg max.

Flowering under the 175 would be pathetic, but veg its fine, just make sure u dont let the canopy get too thick or itll starve the lower leaves out. If ur runnin a long veg u may wanna consider defoliating in veg... Pull all the big fan leaves every week or so, makes much denser, stockier plants with tight nodal spacing.

And tom... 175 mh for cloning??~? are U mad!? hehe dude its best to clone under a small shoplite (23ish watts) for a 2x4 area. In fact, I prefer to clone in total darkness, makes happier looking clones. Photosynthesis is bad when ur making clones, light dep forces them 2 push roots faster and prevents leaf yellowing/decay.

Dont buy a light mover for a 175, thats just silly, total waste of money, if u wanna speed up the veg room, just add another 175.

My $.02

Oh and if u do defoliate, give plain water for at least a couple days after u pull the leaves, as the plant uses less nutes at that point. ^.^ Sorry if I sounded like a deuche, was kinda worked up earlier, long day.

sorry had to sleep. no not a deuche at all, the opposite, i will try your cloning technique. i clone in my veg room, i guess its because i am a little lazy.

Thanks for all the feedback,
so how long can i leave the pre veg (just after rooting) clones under that 175watt? I have about 2 months to kill while my flowering finishes up should i leave them under that for 2 months or keep the clones in stasis for about a month and then put then root um and put them under the 175watt for 1 month? Then of course move them over to a 1k for a little more veg.
