i grew that sensi super skunk back in the early 90's and it was awesome back then. Don't think its anything near the same anymore.

That neon green skunk, i think the closest things to it today i've grown have been sour d & some chemdog crosses.

Growing out esko's 90's shiva skunk at the moment.

Northern Lights the old kind before the copy’s.

Northern Lights 1 was a single stalked, compact plant with a moderate Afghan smell. No one offers this classic version at this time. A strong plant and buzz.

Northern Lights 2 was a sturdy, pine tree shaped with a musty and piney odour. Dutch Passion (Oasis) and THSeeds (Closet Queen) currently offer versions.

Northern Lights 2 X 5 from The Seed Bank was very bushy and resinous with a strong juniper berry smell. A truly remarkable hybrid not offered by anyone.

Northern Lights 5 was available from BCSC for $75, a variety Nevil of The Seed Bank said was only available pure as a cutting. It is likely hybridized at one point.

Northern Lights 9 X 5 "disappeared" when Nevil sold his genetics to Sensi Seeds. This is the only original Northern Lights 9 genetics source to my knowledge.

These are the original Northern Lights breeding lines from which today's versions arose.

Sensi Seed Bank sells Northern Lights with no number attached.

There are also a number 6 and a number 9 which are related.

It wasn't a skunk that you were smoking that is why you won't find it looking in pure skunk.

It is in one of those NL lines that isn't around in seed.

You had to buy em or miss out.

Genes which are located on the same chromosome are not randomly assorted but tend to be inherited together.

"This is known as linkage".

Plants depend on a large number of factors for their phenotype and linked factors are usually dominant.

Linkage adds to the difficulty of combining favourable factors of parents of a cross.

Large populations are needed to obtain recombination and find that rare but desirable individual.

(sound familiar)

My mate grew this NL weed not far away from where I live.

Skunk and NL back then was as tasty as it got. Like Vg said That was the most stoned I have probably been off ganja and ever will be, it was tripping stoned.

People were buying the trim compressed crushed into blocks and loving it until they found what was happening..

Nobody at this time possessed seed of the original skunk genetics from Sam.

We got to grow in this era what was sold or passed on to others who ripped Sam off.

(He's a clever person much smarter than anyone else in the scene I think he knew what happened would happen, and he played it accordingly.)

Most of the great stuff back in this day were the sister lines to the big names, sold to test the favourable combining ability specific combining ability of Parent plants.

"We were able to buy top crosses from proper breeding projects sold to test convergent improvement, and select from the favourable combining ability on certain IBL's which had the ability to combine well with these testers".

All the generic Skunk x NL (Shiva BigBud) Everyone went mad for.

The NL#5 x SK#1 Label sold because of how it was wrote.

The testers from SSSC all as a rule had a general combining ability Known as (GCA).

'Old' smelly clones'.

The only way for a breeder to select for combining ability is to grow and examine the progeny.

back then most it seemed to be big bud, super skunk or NL that was grown by the early commercial growers... until white widow etc came along anyway

I remember smoking some very neon green weed back then, still sticks in my mind today along with Durban Poison.

A lot of decent hash about as well.

Well seeing as my original post was so unhelpful to someone, I'll be more frank.

hello everyone.
does any one know what the "skunk" was that was around in the uk around the early ninetys period?

Could have been anything mate, any indica/sativa hybrid that was around in the '90's could have been it, pretty much everything that wasn't African/Asian import was labelled skunk back then.

Anyone saying anything else is just guessing/bullshitting.

thanks ppl, good posts coming up! they all used to call it skunk, but i have long thought maybe it was not.
neon green sounds right tho, also fond memories of when hash in uk was good hash, in all its many varieties.....before the dreaded soapbar.
maybe guesses, but educated guesses can still be very helpful:)

i have heard of the road kill quest, but this does not sound like it describes the smell to me... the smell was very strong , almost indescribable, with a very sharp edge to it(not sweet) hard to describe...grabbed your nostrils, nothing like uk cheese.
"that smells like... fuckin good skunk" is the only way i could describe it myself.
wondering if it was a hybrid, as the skunk ive grown is sativa-sweet.
what was around , back then?

have you tried sam skunkmans skunk #1?

that is fairly sharp smelling

early ninetys we were doing mostly the super skunk from sensi, although the skunk 1 was ok the super gave the compact buds (bag appeal)..many a "cheesy " a pheno was lost cos of security, fans n filters wre not yet the norm..E2a..many a pheno was lost cos of the new "thing" be it jack herer or white widow..all good but if id kept some of my original skunks from 89/90 theyd be up there with todays cheese easily..imo ,at the time wots known as "that cheesey" smell was a norm at tht time ,but as said before ..fans n filters!!!

This post has made me shiver!

How we survived getting a knock on the door or an early morning visit I will never know. No filters and venting out onto the street. Mate came up from South to visit without knowing where we lived, was arranged to phone to get guided in and there he was. Followed the smell!!

I've no idea how we avoided the pull.

Jesus!

And then there was the 'meter beater' ..... That'd get you a long holiday on its own !!

exactly mate!!!...looking back in hindsight our set up at the time was truly laughable by todays standards!!!we had stolen streetlights (thts another story),buckets tht id got from the flower stall on the high street,a tiny pedastal fan and a 1970s american pamphlet on how to grow!!...like you say its a miracle tht more of us didnt do time!!!!

i have followed the road kill trail and it's north american, the rotten meat smelling strain that is

the dutch made skunk into something totally different than what it was, now it's sweet and not really skunk, just skunk being used as a name/synonym for stable genes/hybrid/around a long time

british colombia is where to look for shit smelling real deal skunk

This thread is taking me back to those 'rave' days. Pretty much all the homegrown around was from sensi seedbank gear.

If you also want to try shiva skunk, its on sann1es, he describes it as sweet citrus cream & Lemon Ice cream power.
