1000watts for 200sqft?

Hey Fellow Cultivators!

I have a 5x5x8 Grow room and I need to flower.

I have 16 plants to flower.

Is more light better? I was originally planning on getting a 600 watt hps set up but felt that for a little more money, i could have more light.

Do I want that much light in my small space?
5ftx5ftx8ft 200sq ft

I'm getting an air cooled hood and have a 300 cfm exhaust fan for ventilation of the hood alone.

I'm factoring electricity costs and if the yield return is true from more light then it would cover the cost of the extra juice to run the show.

So do I want the 600 set up to save electricity and get similar or just as good results as the 1000?

Or is the 1000 going to shit on the 600 in every way possible, except with electricity? :tumbleweed:

I plan on hanging this fixture 7 feet high in the very middle of the 5x5 room with the plants raised 1 foot.

Thanks!:dance013:

You've got 25 sq. feet or 200 cubic feet. If you are going to do 16 in that space you'd better keep them small. I run 20 plants in an area 5 times that big and try to finish them at 3.5 feet. I'd do a 1000w in your space.......

ummm...when you multiply lxw, that's sq., when you multiply lxwxh, that's cubic. If it was sq, then your space would be 10x20 or 13x15(approx) anything equivalent to that.

With that pesky math out of the way...general rule of thumb....the more light the better. My tent is a 2x4 and I had a 600w. I was thinking of upping to a 1000W but am testing out the LED side of things. If that doesn't work out, I will go with the 1000W.
So yeah,,the more light the better. Now, your fan should be more than enough to pull through a carbon filter, through the hood and out.
As far as the 1000W compared to the 600W, you can check out some lumen charts for yourself and see the difference.

Now, for the height. Again..the closer the better without 'burning or bleaching' the plants.
I would say that with the 1K light, a distance of around 18"-24" should be fine...maybe might even be able to go closer due to the hood but only time can tell with that.

As always...this is only my opinion......

a 1000w for a 5x5 will work well with the right hood. the $ difference in electricity between a 600w and a 1000w is small.

Thanks for the input everyone, going with the 1000 watter for sure!

As they say, you learn from your mistakes!

I can get a nice 1000watt virtual sun set up on amazon, and when it comes to my budget, its not big, so 300$ is my max spending and I can get a 1000 watt MH/HPS set up for that price, or for like 230 I could get a nice 1000 watt hps set up.

1000 over 600 in 5x5. some prefer 2 600s in that space if you can afford it.
is more light better? if you can control the temp, hell yes!

1000 watter

1000 watter

I use a 1000 watt light in 22 sqft area with a light mover and works great. 2-600 watters may get better light distribution but with limited budget get the 1000 watter.

Just be sure that the reflector will cover the 5 X 5 area well.

Use yoyo hangers to adjust reflector height or a rope and pulley system.

used to run 16 to 25 plants in a 5'x5' tent, hit 1.5 lbs without even trying. 1000w for sure, 600w will be puny in a 5x5.

nice. I hope it serves you well......I don't know if you know this next bit of info so if you do, please do not think I am to be a wiseguy or anything, just trying to help.
HID lights only 'last' for approx. 1 year. By 'last' I mean that they start to lose their intensity. I don't remember off hand how many hours they are rated for but please do not think now that you have bought this system, your spending days are over...That is the drawback about HID. They're good for around a year but better check on that. Some people swear by the practice that if you're ballast has a 100+% setting, after around 8-9 months, depending on how long your cycles are, you use the 100+% setting to get that extra bit of life out of the light before you have to spend some $$$ to buy a new one.

Good Luck

If I had to I would change the hood and bulb every year and will be able to do that, its the ballast that I hope can work for a long time. 3 year warranty, not the gavita i wish I could get but thats the plan for later!

I dunno if I'd buy something like that from Amazon. And I certainly wouldn't review it with a nic like "Pro Grower" like someone did on there.

Trust No One, as my friend Fox Moulder used to say.

you'll be very happy with a 1000w in a 5x5 area, with only one lamp i would be shifting
some plants everyday or so so they all get a crack at the sweet spot.

good luckand post some pics when the nugz start to fatten up! :joint:
