Puffing for Terps

My fave time to puff my herbs is 4 days from chop. The terps are so awesome at this point. Most folks completely miss this buzz by waiting weeks, or even months before puffing. I am a terpene junkie hardcore. Anyone else? Peace GS

Im with ya I love the really special smells and tastes of cannabis. There not easy to find. A Lot of stuff has the same smells flavors.... This is why I did some crosses with my Querkle grape candy pheno... She is lip smacking for sure..:)

I like barely dry weed too, can't beat the taste. With some kinds, anyway. I have a few that taste like shit until 4-6wks.

My wife likes to take green budlets, right off the plant, and just burn off the trichomes in a bowl. I always know she has been in my grow because I find little blackened but not burned balls of bud laying around.

Speaking of querkle the samples I vaped right after dry (so somewhere close to your 4 day mark GS) tasted so good in the vape. They still taste great now 1+ month later but that fresh taste was something else. I wish I had frozen some like I said I was going to.

yep...right here man...i find the fresher stuff to taste stronger with a better terpene profile and much more intense than cured herb....imo comparable to scissor hash and dry sieve...the scissor hash will always taste more and get you more fucked

Seriously??? lol.. Ehh, that shit's funny as fuck..

Yeah she likes the taste and high doing it that way. She is real good at keeping the green material from burning, so the hits are like hash.

She got the technique from me, when working with something new, I do this to help determine optimal harvest window. Of course I use visual indicators too, what the heads look like, smell, etc. but I find that actually flashing the resin off a green budlet into my lungs is the best gauge of the resin's profile at a given time.

One more thing about smoking just dried, uncured buds: If your product is not squeaky clean, it doesn't work too well. It won't burn right, and the disgusting taste of the overfed green material overwhelms your yummy terps. I am particularly sensitive to the bad taste and harsh burny smoke of unclean weed, so I take great care to make sure my smoke is as clean as possible. The green part of my buds has a very neutral, clean, kinda woody taste that does not interfere with the good stuff, and I can roll a joint that will burn perfectly 48 hrs after chop.

Tug was a ball player too Mofeta.

I was hangin and puffin with Chimera this week. We discussed why I grow big plants. You see, I like to puff big buds, so I grow big plants. I told Chimera I kept all the tops. He said you know, those are the youngest part of the plant. Some folks may want the older parts of the plant. My guess is, the freshest terps will be found at the end of flower ,on the youngest plant parts. Wink and a nudge. Whatcha all think? Peace GS

I really dont know if I have found anything that I enjoy more than day old scissor hash.
This of course is a cannabis related statement..

Hi GS

I think of freshness as the time from chop to the time of consumption.

I think of maturity as the amount of time that the flowers are allowed to grow on the plant.

I find that the tops of plants are about a week behind the lower buds in terms of maturity.

So, if you chopped a whole plant, the top would be less mature than the lower parts, but since you harvested it all at the same time, the freshness would be equal.

But would the older nugs not have evaporated more terps than fresh ones still producing fresh ones?. Remember I am a terp fan. Peace GS

I think it is mainly dependent on the variety.

Some types I have will have a much different terp profile when immature than when mature. I think a lot of people are familiar with plants that stink in a certain way when immature, then lose that smell when mature.

Some types I have will have basically the same terp profile (smell the same) at all stages, becoming more intense (sometimes less though) with maturity.

Then of course, is how the terp profile changes once chopped. Sometimes the change after chop depends on the stage of maturity at chop.

Also, as you have perceptively pointed out before, the amount of veg (small vs big) adds another variable.

I also find that growing temps, especially the max temp, and then also DIF secondarily will effect terp profile and overall terp amount.

Then the style of growing (organic soil vs hydro etc.) has an effect on terp profile and amount.

I'll stop now, as it seems I have ranged far from the original "tops vs sides" issue. It is just that I too am a terp fan, and have spent considerable study of how to get what I prefer.

It really is very complex.

With some of my cuts, the difference in terps obtainable by manipulating the above variables can be striking. I give people two samples, not letting them know they are from the same cut, but grown/matured/cured differently. They don't believe me when I tell them. I think this also explains the wide variation in reports you will see on the boards on a cut- the "best smoke I've had" followed by a post "WTF are you talking about, this cut didn't even get me high" thing.

Bottom line- couple different growing/maturing/curing with extensive puff testing. EXTENSIVE puff testing.

Someone has to do it.

Nice reply bro. With plants like Rene there is a harevest window for smell and taste. It goes from about day 54- 62. Harvesting after loses much of her famed stank, but the buzz intensifies a bit more. I like to harvest in both windows, having the best of both worlds. I must admit the early jar is always empty first. Some may be thinking this could be a result of it being done first, but I find it is just the jar I usually reach for when wanting to puff Rene.

I have a few strains that I like to take nugs from earlier {I normally hang plants for 7 days then trim into jars. These ones I chop into jars on day 6} and store them in the fridge to keep them more fresh. Much of their uniqueness disappears if you dry them completely. HP 13 for instance, it has a sour smell and taste that disappear when it dries out. After it dries fully it just reminds me of Hashplant or Champagne.

I am not close to figuring this all out yet, but cherish the opportunity to experiment further.

Puff on my terp lovin brethren and sistren . Peace GS.
