Ubuntu Linux ... WOW!!!!

I've been using Debian from 'woody' edition on my desktop PC, but since i have a laptop I run legal windows vista preinstalled on this and I think it's a good OS, assuming you have good anti-virus software and you clean junk files from time to time. What scares me in vista is that it occupies a lot of harddisk space with only few applications comparing to linux I had. There's a directory called 'winsxs', kind of duplicate of most system files, it's about 6GB capactity here, holy shit! that's more than complete linux lol , only 'windows' system folder is over 12GB huge on disc, without user files and my software. Not that I have small harddisk, but defragmenting or searching takes a lot of time then. I had to disable lot of services running on start and 'bells and whistles' to run it smoothly. Another problem is my antivirus trial expires soon, I don't want avast as it passed very danger virus once so I couldn't even use repair from installation cd.
I'm going to install new Debian edition, next to microsoft OS. I've already tried mentioned here Ubuntu edition, run it from live cd. And voila! everything works, every device in my laptop is installed and seems to work correctly. Nice surprise, as I remember many troubles with hardware (wifi or untypical expansion cards). So now I'm going to download installation dvd with debian and I hope I'll write next message from linux
I'll probably miss my FruityLoop software, but I hope to run it from linux somehow (not sure about ASIO4ALL low-latency drivers for soundcard and overall, midi connection with keyboard).

I used to use .wine (dot wine), but have found almost no need at this time now, between my desktop's functionality and my Tablet's OS, I'm able to accomplish everything I need to without ever breathing a whiff of Windows EVER AGAIN.

I love Ubuntu, but really hate the Unity desktop they decided to go to. First thing I do on every Ubuntu install is install the old gnome desktop.
I guess I could go with Mint or Lubuntu. I just wish gaming was better on a linux OS... that's the only thing keeping me tied to Win7.

Gabe Newell said the Steam team is working on a Linux client and rumor is it will be out this year!
I dumped win 3.11 for linux command line and loved it.
X wasn't supported on my videocard Buuut, the 386 server board I was using allowed all 24M of ram to be used.... unlike being locked at 16M with win 3.11.
Ubuntu is pretty dang slick, gotta hand it to them. I like the LXDE desktop myself.
The only thing I personally use windows for is patching my ddo.com client, when they make a patch that doesn't install under linux/wine properly.
The best thing I like about linux is coming back to something you were typing on... a MONTH later, and the window is still comes to the foreground instantly and without issues. LOL (Yeah... I don't like re-booting my machines, can you tell? LOL)

Whoever said they don't like Unity, I've gotta put bells on that. The developers buried EVERYTHING and made it less usable, not more. Problems with Firefox forced me to d/l Chromium, and then all kinds of neat things happened, like syncing with my Tablet.
I never liked Gnome before, preferred KDE. Because I don't like Unity, I'm forcing myself to work with it.
It's been so long since I've worked on a Windows machine I don't know if I can do it anymore, don't know if I remember. Plus there's Windows 7, now, right? I think it's supposed to be rather different from all previous versions of the OS.

Same here. Can't stand Unity. The intent, so I've heard, is to "standardize" a GUI across multiple platforms (PCs, tablets, etc.).

imho it's easy... Archwiki has tons of info, step by step........ You'll learn alot about linux installling it........... It wasn't bad when I first install it.... I did however had a headache getting the GMA500 card to work on a dell mini 10..... Other than that , it's a breeze...... blazing fast on old systems and new....... linux with out all the bloat....

I learned so much more about computers in general when I started using Linux. I'm a big fan of linux and who doesn't love open source....

I cut my teeth back in the early days of CPM and DOS so I still like having a command line. Linux allows for that.

Anyone use Fluxbox? I've got that running on a machine here at work. Nice minimalistic interface.
