I did African Seeds version of Malawi Gold many years ago. The difference, well, the old African Seeds version delivered a notably more complex high that scrambled your head so that you couldn't function-perhaps one man's medicine vs another man's poison. Further, they didn't taste nearly so good, it was a lot hotter to smoke and didn't produce nearly the resin, nor did it have the intensity of upness to it's HIGH. Also, their version was prone to setbacks in growth as they were entering the budding phase so that they would not recover nearly so easily. Yield wise, they were probably similar in the final outcome but all in all, Afropips version shines out head and shoulders above IMHO. Despite what people may have thought of Jim, he was really onto something when he released this strain onto the market and I see it really stands as a legacy from the man now that he's passed on (may he RIP).

I haven't tried ACE's version yet but from my experience with their Golden Tiger, which is a cross of their Malawi with a Meo Thai, it appears that she's not in the same league. After it's initially intense high, she lets you down with an indica like stone that lays me out with a heavy thud everytime. That's certainly not the Thai factor in there creating that effect, so I gather their standard Malawi, while reputedly being dreadfully potent (as is their Golden Tiger), doesn't bear a lot of resemblence to Afropips version either. But if you simply want your head ripped off and hammered into the mud after an exhilarating rocket ride, Golden Tiger's one to try for sure. I can only imagine their Malawi must be a real shocker!

Hey Billy, I want to first thank you for this thread. I ordered some Afropips Malawi Gold before, but I clearly got hosed on the deal, and got bogus MG. I wont name the seedbank, but now I only do business with the Boo.

Its great to hear your thoughts on the strain. I have a few of his strains going in my garden too(Senegal Haze, Swazi Red).

I must correct some misinformation in your post though. Afroman(Jim) is not dead. He's alive and well, but sadly its his son who passed away in 2008. I learned this in a few email correspondences with Afroman in 2010.

Someone, somewhere started this internet rumor that he is dead, and for whatever reason it just wont stay dead, no pun intended.

fantastic growing and breeding billy! love it. If only my Afropips Malawi (and swazi) had not been ripped when I got robbed ~6yrs ago...still got a pack of his Nigerian in the fridge. they're getting old too but hopefully they'll still pop!
I would love the chance to grab your version of the malawi as that sounds like a wonderful experience.

How hard would it be to preserve her characteristics mainly type of high? I'm aware this would require meticulous picking between large numbers of plants. One would also need luck with weather.

I'm interested in geographic acclimatization of MJ plants in general. Where could I read more about it?

Great thread, Billy. I still have some of my Afropips Malawi Gold seeds as well as some of their Malberry and Nigerian. Finished an indoor grow of Malberry and it's a great strain. The high is pretty unique. The Malawi Gold was tough to grow for me indoors, but I haven't given up on it just yet.

Id say not impossible, Ive grown similar flowering strains above 50N, they finish (just) before frosts, the light is too low so buds are smaller and not as resinous, but still great smoke.
Once these sativas get big, they can handle frosts just below freezing, but basically stop growing at that point.

50! Wow. The only experience I have with long flowering sativas is sativa from Durban region (30ish deg latitude). Not aclimatized. She went deep into November but eventually froze and shriveled. She wasn't in a good spot. Not much sun. Only mornings. I bet she could live a few weeks longer if placed on a sunny spot.

I would probably have to sample a lot of males which flower earlier and make majority of decisions based on that. Picking earlier ladies in the process. I might get some results after 3, 4 years...

Type of high that billyblog described is what I'm looking for. Cocain type of high. That's why I also pick my flowers a bit early.

But first I would need to get a hold of those beans.

for a quick suggestion and a strain that always impressed me, c99 for a clear and intense energy high, though a good pure haze could be even closer to the mark.

Perhaps what stands out the most about Afro's Malawi is that the energy is not interrupted because it delivers such a clean, clear buzz that in real terms, it equates to real energy because it allows you to get much more achieved, where as it's nearest competitors to it's own class all tend to scramble you more so that at the end of the day, their energy is more just going around and around in your head and you don't actually achieve nearly so much. Because I am into creative stuff, I way prefer this as I don't lose my train of thought and end up pulling a lot more together in my day without being hampered as I'm not so wasted. Also, nothing else delivers such a lingering UP buzz that you wake to energy the next day without residual hangover effects.

For anyone who is interested in beans, I'd like to do a donation to Gypsy's Server Fund at sometime in the future but as I am about to go away for a month or so, I'm not going to have a chance of doing anything like that until after then, so I'd deal with that on return.

I've enjoyed the C99 and it is a very nice up daytime experience. I also quite enjoy Ace's Old Timer Haze. It is a very unique and clear up experience, though can get a little edgy with over indulgence. No need for coffee when using the Old Timer Haze.

I'll be keeping my eye on the Server fund donation...

I grew this strain from Tropical seeds when they reproduced it (the original was sold from African seeds co.)

I did move it to greenhouse the last 2 weeks of flower and it finished mid nov but could have gone till end nov.

Its a very clear head high, positive and creative.

What a nice tread, I congratulate you for your efforts in preserving that strain. The African sativas seems to always keep a secret or two. I am glad that you send some of this seed to ICMAG Server Fund, hope that you pass the seeds to the ones that can appreciate as well.

Nice to see those malawis alive and well. Truly a legendary line of tropical landraces. I agree with the spanish Malawi from ACE, really potent stuff although with a heavy couchlocking effect which is weird.

I've heard that some of the best malawi available was the one offered in the past by Dr Greenthumb, or maybe it was Greenhornet??? The swiss seedbank which also used to sell Sri Lanka, Thai82 and Vietnam Tourist. Those are also some lost gems indeed!

Looking forward to see some more pictres about those AfroMalawis!
