Red Bone Coon Hound

I have a dog already, a male pit bull that is my pride and joy. He is my best friend and we spend a lot of time together. A lot of my plans are customized to bring him with me.

Anyway... I have a new dog. I come home from work the other day and there was a dog in my living that belonged to a relative of my girl friend. She had to move back home with her parents and since our record is so good taking care of dogs we were the obvious choice.

My initial reaction was a flat "oh Fuck no". I was serious. My dog is like me, a laid back guy. My dog and I have a lot in common in that we are both a couple big tough guys that don't have to prove anything. If shit goes down we are there, but we don't have to go announcing it every minute. My dog can walk as far as me and about the same speed. We are the perfect match. But now we have a coon hound, a young one that has not even outgrown chewing on shit. The whole balance of the universe has changed. She runs around and sniffs or licks everything she sees. She wants to go 24-7 and she wants to go full speed. She actually runs into walls and shit. Now that there is a female here my dog thinks he has to be Billy Bad-Ass. He sees another male dog go walking buy and he has to make this dog go away. He don't want some other dog getting near his bitch.

Now at first I said, fuck no. That was a week ago. Yesterday I took her and my boy to the waterfront in the city for a long walk and run. Now it seems like I have another fucking dog.

Oh and I would show a picture of my pit, as I am so proud of him, but he has distinguishing marks I am afraid to post here. The coon hound looks like every other coon hound you ever seen. In fact if you go to google you will see a photo of a dog that looks Just like her.

Just wondering, do you know what the ancestry of these coon hounds is? By the floppy ears on that one she must have some bloodhound in her ancestry.
I think she looks a bit like a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Honestly, your guess is as good as mine. Google is always there for anyone that wants to really know.... just about anything.

I use Google a lot in my work (Artist/broker/sales)

Hey man those hounds are built to run all night long. The more exercise she gets the calmer she will be. And she will have prey drive out of this world.. Squeaky toys really turn her on??
She's a beauty
Good luck

Huligun,

That is definitely a Red bone.

My father and I used to run them when I was a young one.

They will run all night if you let them, and there are raccoon's to run.

My father would lay his jacket in the field next to the woods we were running and we would come back in the morning to find them lying on the jacket he laid down.

Very hyper though.

Best regards,

Newd

OK, I'm a jackass for not reading your post more thoroughly.

I have to be honest bro, I am an animal lover, truly, and I'm sure you love your pit, but please don't underestimate what they are capable of.

I don't know how old your son is and it's none of my business, but pit bulls are bred to kill. Plain and simple. I don't buy into media hype, but you cannot deny the reality of their records. It's not their fault, but it is a reality.

I will never be the parent that say's "If only I had known."

Best regards,

Newd

Check your facts newd. Pits are no different than ole Red Bone there. Stronger jaws but the same drive. Your dad knows what a coon hound is capable of.

nice gyp huli........prob is with hounds at least working lines ....you gotta work 'em......I've run hounds for years on longtails, bob's, bear, fox and coon.....lot's of hours enjoying the woods and finding grow spots that you'd never locate till the dog trees.........

newd.....what a joke stating something as ridiculous as bred to kill......bred to catch is more like it.....and with all the pit's I've had since 70's most all are extremely lovin' towards people......................but love catchin' hogs...........

that's gonna be a great addition to the family hulligan, she'll bring some fresh energy into the house, I know my newly adopted sweetie did the same at my crib. Alice (my 9 yr old Springer) loves her new friend and I'm sure Scooby's loving her new accommodations.

my pitbull seems to be bred to love, she licks and jumps in lap 24/7 a real pain in my ass, I just adopted her on Patty's Day.

an old lobsterman friend of mine Zeke from Jamestown RI had a pitbull named Joe way back in the early 80s, his dog (a male) was the same in your face kissing n' lickin' you kind of dog from the first time Joe had even met me or anybody else, pure goodness.

you're in more danger of my dogs wagging tail then her mouth full of teeth.

you get out exactly what you put in.......

A sheepdog is bred to herd sheep and if you get a good one it will do it all by instinct, without any training.
A pitbull is bred to kill other dogs, and while you may be able to suppress those instincts for a while all it needs is for something to trigger it and it will attack to kill.
All the pampering in the world wont eradicate those instincts.
And don't forget they are banned in a lot of places, not for nothing, but for their long record of fatal attacks on people.

You Sir are a fuckin moron. Your bias against pits has been well documented here. You are not invisible. You are not a grower. We see you for who and what you are.

Maybe you forget what they were bred for.
Give you a hint: "Pit" refers to the pits that dogs fought in.
That is what they were bred for, nothing else.

they were originally bred to bait bears and bulls hence the name bull terrier, that surely sounds like something else. Next they were thrown in pits with rats to kill (a terrier trait) and then they were finally matched against other dogs.

for you to have such tunnel vision invites me to wonder if you think all Germans named Adolf are Nazis or if every one of Hitlers descendents are Nazis, no, I imagine you're a bit smarter than that. there's really not much to a name or an unproven fighting lineage, or do you believe EVERY pitbull had at one time fought?

http://thebullybreedblog.com/2011/11/28/pitbull-myths-and-bully-breed-info/

“DO PIT-BULLS SNAP AND TURN ON PEOPLE?”

MYTH!

This is a joke and its a shame anyone ever believes it, people ask me all the time, do PitBulls snap? I have heard about the notion that ”the Pit-Bull’s brain never stops growing and eventually it gets too big for the skull and the dog explodes into a fit of rage” which is ridiculous and proven not to be the case. I guess that is a Bully Breed myth wrapped inside a myth! This is insanity! Now lets have some common sense talk, the most basic thought that comes to mind is, “Well, would you expect your Yorkie to snap one day?”.

I surely wouldn’t expect honest thinking people to believe this myth. The facts about PitBulls and Bully Breed dogs are that they are no different than any pure-bred or rescue dog breed in existence. Even if a Bully Breed becomes aggressive there are always warning signs preceding any type of attack.

The question ”Do PitBulls snap” and go crazy, attacking anyone in sight, is a ridiculous one. It is a myth however that can’t be “proven” so-to-speak in the same way that you or I can’t prove that a rabbit doesn’t talk when nobody is around to listen. Its just more ‘PitBull Bull’ that makes for sensationalist stories that are based on no factual data or evidence to ever suggest otherwise. Getting these truths out in the open will serve well in our fight against Breed Specific Legislation.

PROOF: Aggression in a Bully Breed, or any animal, is never an action in itself, rather it is a reaction to a specific circumstance. Like stated there are always warning signs preceding an attack and even a dog trained to attack first needs a command to engage. Essentially, PitBulls and Bully Breed dogs are a reflection of their owner and the training they have received. Their temperament is a result of genetics and the environment in which they were raised. Whether a mud-blood rescue dog or a “best in show” pure-bred, the facts about PitBulls are that they cannot just “snap”. So if we are talking facts, this is not one of them.

Well I am no expert on the breed, but if my Pit Bull was bred to kill it has been taught to love. He really loves little kids and women the most. Some men he give a warning growl to. If he is defending a dwelling he will make some seriously aggressive moves and sounds if an intruder comes in. But walking on a leash he just wants to piss on everything and if someone wants to pet him that is usually okay. He has chewed up a couple foolish male dogs that attacked him, but nothing too serious. We were able to break it up soon enough. So far the only thing that I know for sure he killed was a skunk and an oppossum. The skunk story is worthy of a thread of it's own! I smelled skunk on him for a year!

The Red Bone is one of the most insane and energetic dogs I have ever had. Worse one of all was a German Short-hair that I kept for about 10 months and finally gave to someone that hunts with them. This dog isn't that bad. But she does LOVE to run. She runs like a deer. You can barely see her feet touch the ground. A site of beauty.

I love all dog will hurt someone if I see them abuse one. I am a peaceful lover but if I see someone hurt the innocent or handicapped I can turn medevil fast. Dogs are just dogs. They do stupid shit, but just need to be trained. My pit is trained and I love em. This coon hound chewed up a favorite shoe of mine the other day. I was mad as hell, but it passed. I would be madder if my girl friends daughter snatched a handful of my buds without asking (she does it all the time). Just have to go with it.

Thanks everyone.

And as far as the breed being bad (pits) that may be true. Not everyone should have one. Kind of like a Porche. A Porche will kill you in a heart beat. Certain kinds of airplanes are that way. That plane that JFK Jr crashed, a Piper Saratoga is called "The Doctor Killer". So if you live in a place that is not a good fit or are not good with raising dogs don't get a pit. But don't trample my right to own one in some stereotypical way. My dog is with me all the time and is trained to love people. He may defend himself against a male that attacks him, but so would I. He never runs off looking for blood. It is all in the training.
