Maybe the NFL could go two hand touch?
That way none of the grown men who know the risks and choose to accept them will get hurt.

Gotta protect those 1%ers from themselves after all.

And can you believe a football coach would curse in the locker room before a game?
Im personally appaled at the very thought of a coach cursing and using hyperbolic statements to whip his team into a frenzy!!!!
I mean ffs football has never been violent and surely vulgarity and violent rhetoric have no place in a locker room!!!

Football is a GAME....which is NOT war, but a SIMULATION of war. It's supposed to be war except without, you know...mother fuckers getting maimed, scarred, and killed......right? Starting to make sense now?? They didn't used to wear padding at all. They only started wearing it to help prevent players from getting hurt. Imagine that.

The problem is, apparently some jackasses and armchair morons think these safety precautions gives them license to intentionally try to hurt and cripple. What the fuck? Like since your car is equipped with crumple zones and seat belts, its cool for me to drive like a fucking maniac and purposely run you off the road into a tree. Makes total sense.

From a sportmanship standpoint, this is un fucking acceptable behavior. Really, the fact that I have to sit here and beat this concept into someone's mind astounds me. Where did you grow up dagnabit? In the ghetto?

If I had to pick out THE biggest problem America faces today......I'd have to say it's the part of our culture which glorifies violence, killing, death, and destruction. I don't watch much TV or listen to the radio much but when I do I am sometimes shocked by how normalized this stuff has become. It's not healthy. We watch a video of someone getting his fucking head cut off or dying in a million other horrific ways, and it's like mother fuckers just laugh about it. I feel somewhat like Jesus must have felt all those years ago, shaking his head in disgust at the sin and wickedness of the Jews.

America is changing, and not for the better. Some of the responses to this thread greatly disturb me, not only the hateful and vile stuff, but also the "meh" attitude as if "well, maybe it was justified" or "not a big deal." I don't and won't accept that standard of behavior for myself or for my comrades. That is a low down and dirty way to act. There is no excuse for what that guy did.....period.

I weep for this country's future, because I know there's only two ways this nation can get off the path of evil and back on the right track...the easy way, and the hard way. Right now it looks like the arrogance and stubbornness is at overwhelming strength, so the hard road is looking most likely. The only way things will turn around is if we start by embracing basic respect for our fellow man, growing a sense of dignity, and setting standards for ourselves and our behavior.

gingerale, your post was going pretty good in regards sport's ethics, then you wrote this bullshit. lol...

obviously, you will rant at others for what you perceive as wrong, yet you do not see your own foulness.

what does it say in the gospels again? something like clean your eyes before you go around trying to clean someone else's eye?

yeah, that.

Looked to me like a school or college team, in which case it governing body should have seen the vid, and took what sanctions it needs to get that bum outta sports. But it also is a statement about todays social mores where its "what ever it takes to win". Sports or finances its all about the win, consequences be damned. Then when he gets to pay for his hit, he'll cry its taken out of context or it was all a jokes and if anyone is offended I'll sorta apologize. just saying....

yeah, maybe I've been a bit misunderstood here. I can be completely wrong, maybe that guy standing on 2nd base with his back turned to his attacker wasn't as innocent as he looked but Good Stuffs explanation I found laughable; when you try dragging in growing as a defense to his posture???

you can disagree with me here, that's fine, look @ the video one more time paying attention to the intent @ point of impact, come back and remind me of the relationship of that hit and anyone's attitude as it pertains to growing.

nice try though Hydro.......

Cheap shots in sports!!! Oh no!! Get out my ALL CAPS and bold

Here is the relationship between growers and athletes accused of poor conduct. Third parties like yourself get all up in arms and scream for someones head. You are demonstrating MOB mentality and stirring people up.

Third parties like yourself decry ANY defense or explanation AND third parties like you cry for government intervention and government punishment.

Sports fights cheap or not are handled by the teams, players, and leagues. What is the difference between back turned and a 98 MPH fastball thrown at a player? By the time the guy figures out it isn't going to be over the plate he is beaned. Should all pitchers that intentionally throw at batters be banned for life?

What about the catchers who tackle a batter from behind as he charges the mound? Should the catcher be banned for life for jumping the batter when his back was turned?

I really wish people would respect the choices made by other and recognize that ALL individuals are free to make bad choices. If bad choices are made then there may be consequences but those effected should determine what the consequences are.

You, I, this community, and the public are NOT effected by this dispute and WE have ZERO fucking interest in whether baseball hands out punishment THEREFORE we should be SILENT observers, knowing that our opinions don't hold power of law, or even an understanding of baseball disciplinary standards.

Go ahead an scream for lynching. Just don't be surprised when some sound like defense attorneys.

How many MEN in the history of baseball have received lifetime bans? Only one in my lifetime that I know of (Pete Rose), before you go doubling that list maybe the commissioner should get first crack?

To some, this has an element of humor. Everybody knows somebody they wouldn't mind seeing laid out like that. But generally speaking we all know it's socially (and sometimes criminally) unacceptable to sucker punch.

IMO, freedom of expression includes the right to socially/publicly abhor this kind of behavior.

We're free to express but we're not always free to act. Ben Franklin worried that interpretation of freedom itself would go to people's heads and eventually wreak havoc on society.

Give the kid a couple games suspension like we have been doing for last 100 years and move on with your lives.

Is the like first time you guys have ever seen baseball?

You never seen a bench clearing before? lol

sometimes people get punched, kicked in the face in those piles........shit happens like that in sporting events.

judged and sentenced.

basing ourselves on this,

what are the comments?

it seems the ones in a position to do something about it felt that such poor sportmanship deserved such punishment.

agree or disagree?

IMO, a running, full tilt sucker punch isn't comparable to anything anybody's comparing here. If I engage in a brawl, I expect to be engaged. Had it not been for video tape, we wouldn't even know what happened.

this effects my community if a player like this shows up to play a local team. to think otherwise would be shortsighted, OF COURSE it was my business.

and while I'm lmfmfao@y I can tell you this, 'this will definitely go on his permanent record' :pointlaug

Yavapai College and the Athletic Department aspire to the ideals of good sportsmanship and fair play. In no way do we condone the behavior as recorded in the video, which occurred on March 29, 2012 at the Yavapai versus Scottsdale Community College baseball game. The YC player involved was immediately suspended by the college and will be suspended from play for the rest of the season. The college has implemented this action and will continue to work with the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) on current and future sanctions following conference procedures. Per conference rules team members from both teams involved in the on field incident have already served their suspensions.

and hey, here's more:

Scott Farnsworth, the athletic director at Yavapai College, says O'Such "was immediately suspended by the college and will be suspended from play for the rest of the season."

"Yavapai College and the Athletic Department aspire to the ideals of good sportsmanship and fair play," Farnsworth says in a statement. "In no way do we condone the behavior as recorded in the video, which occurred on March 29, 2012 at the Yavapai versus Scottsdale Community College baseball game."

As with all nasty, non-game-related hits going on in sporting events, it's worth knowing whether the incident's being investigated by police.

Melissa Hodgdon, a spokeswoman for the Yavapai College Police Department, tells New Times charges have not been filed against O'Such, and it would be up to Bamrick if he'd like to press charges. Hodgdon says Bamrick has not taken that route as of yet.

A Prescott police spokesman tells New Times no one reported the incident to that police department, so it's up to Bamrick and college police.

again Hydro, I could be all wrong here.......

btw, recommending that people sit in silence instead of demanding action is exactly what those in charge pray we'll do.

Hockey has these all the times and sometimes slashing sticks to the face, cross checks, and sucker punches.

Baseball isn't hockey and Jr. college isn't the professionals. The punish may be justified and the act is certainly douchey but calling for the guy to face the criminal justice system is just way too far over the top.

The guy hit hasn't pressed charges, end of story. I bet there are many uncharged assaults outside of sports, let the government work on some of those first.

I keep imagining some of you defending Foghorn Leghorn for hammering the trash can over the sleeping dogs head.

Not the initial giggle, then the realization the shot was out of line. More like direct advocacy. :chin:
