Home grown tobacco UK

Its not difficult to grow, it just takes a while for the seedlings to get big enough to grow at a decent pace. Its like watching paint dry in the early stages :)

I started late this year but these may get to 4ft or so before the first frost hits, unless the slugs and snails get `em first :)

Got the environment right this time , pelleted seeds left on top , sprayed to keep damp under ziplock tents , 18 hours indirect light , popped in eight days at 78 f in a propagator.

What a fucking performance compared to weed.

Couple of hundred plants from the three pelleted selections if i prick them out carefull.

i started mine under the 600w hps. that got them nice fat leaves quick. then i just gave it living room light (direct window light at best position)

they got pretty big, considering how far north i am. but im sure it was mainly the hps that gave me such nice leaves on them.

you want to pinch the flowers , that way the plant focuses its growth on leaves.

which is the point with tobacco.

id pick the best plant though and allow it to have a few flowers, each flower gives you hundreds of seeds.

i didnt bother with individual containers for each plant, they got pretty big anyway, very beautiful plant that way. very thick and full. just used a large container, 25l probably. some "indoors trashcan" that i got in ikea.

im not gonna bother with smoking it, till its cured for at least 1 year. (maybe 2 or 3)

if you want it cured sooner, you can build a kiln

just google tobacco kiln making or something like that.

Interesting topic! An older friend of mine got cheap(read, smart) years ago and tried growing it right in the tobacco heartland of Virginia. He had terrible luck, but I'm unsure if it was the plant or him. Very surprised to hear you can grow it inside. It has a real reputation here for tearing up the soil.

tearing up the soil? (unfamiliar with the expression)

they didnt grow huge, 2 feet plant, maybe 2.5.

plus i also had them 2-3 weeks under the 600w hps.

plus it was a good summer, they got plenty of light at the window.

not bad yield though, probably got all in all 2-3 shopping bags of leaves.

if you are talking about them using alot of soil, i did have them in large containers, at least 25l maybe more. lol might even have been 50l now i think about it... were rather large trashcans considering they were supposed to be indoors.

Tobacco depletes the soil more so than most plants. Much of the deforestation early on in the Southern colonies was caused by tobacco. Farmers would plant a field for a couple years, then have to move on to new land to keep up the productivity. Led to a lot of bad slash and burn practices.

The company that supplied the seed reckon an ounce of smoke per plant for midlands UK in 25+ litre tubs , which means i need more than i can grow to be self sufficient , but at fifteen pounds for 50 gram every little helps.

Could hardly be worse than most rolling brands , ornamental nicotiniana grows well here but mouldy by the end , could bring a dozen into a greenhouse when the toms finish.

With decent compost and a heated prop its amazeing how much faster things get going , those rootrainer pots were good with sweetcorn last year , larger sizes suit cana.

I used to be a pipe smoker, and have always wondered if some of the cooler curing processes for tobacco couldn't be applied to cannabis. I wonder how the cavendish process would suit cannabis.

They are a bit fiddly to prick out but recover fine , nearly all the pelleted made it , very few bare seeds did , with this species the coating seems to be an advantage worth paying a little more for.

Its the same coating that GH use by its look and feel.

Could have used shallow pots , surface rooting at this stage , two hundred plantlets in total , overkill but will have plenty to pass around and trade down the allotment.

Two weeks after transplanting the growth rate has just taken off , some have been in 12/12 HPS , most in 20/4 cfl , little difference seen.

Was hopeing to have them in the greenhouse by now but had a late frost last night , way too many plants and started too early this time , last year was too late.

Have noticed that mites are not present , or feeding , on the tobacco plants spread amongst cana which has a low level infestation.

Tomatoes alongside are being nibbled a bit but the peppers are being worst hit , will not grow them indoors again with cana.

Fucking gorgeous tobacco so far!

I've seen the 1000 year-old tobacco from this company grown in full sun. It's got a real presence to it.. Beyond resinous massive leaves, tiny yellow flowers. Did pretty well outdoors with no cover in a cool night climate. Pick off all the flowers as they start to bud. I was also told to always direct seed tobacco, but some of us don't live in bloody Ecuador....I also have some Hopi Tobacco seeds, wish they were pelleted.

If you think tobacco seeds are small, you should see Rabbit Tobacco (Gnaphalium obstusifolium) seeds!!! They can squeeze through the zipper in a plastic baggy.

Hi Nader , eyesights failing and can barely see them , thank god weed has decent sized seeds.

Once they get going they are tougth , fibrous mat of roots allows easy seperation on repotting and they recover fast , doing well under 12/12 sodium and 20/4 CFL , can be vegged pretty much anywhere and will stand a near frost.

Sold a hundred for a pound each at a boot fair last weekend , lots of interest and could have sold a whole lot more , but the space they take from their spreading habit makes other plants more profitable.

This is a Black sea strain , tall and thin leaved tougth landrace type , letting a few flower for seed.
Real problem with slugs in a recent wet summer , but no other pests touch them , even root aphids that must be present in the recycled compost i used before i realised i had them.

picture.php

The leaves have a wonderfull musky smell and are very stickey to touch , fast dried and uncured samples smoke like pipe tobacco , enougth nicotine to race your heart and make you fall over cougthing up blood , hopefully better after proper cureing or its downgraded to insecticide.

The commercial Virginia and Burley are milder with huge leaves very suitable for blunts , these wraps are very overpriced in the shops and i reckon i can do better for pence.

im sure this will be deleted just like farm hero since tobacco is POISON so says someone controlling the board.

im interested to try the virginia gold or light for personal blunt wraps. glad there are a few people working with tobacco for themselves. and not letting the big name companys charge u for tobacco ur gonna toss anyways. stay safe.

Tobacco is a holy and beautiful plant just like Ganjah.. Every seasoned smoker should at least once in their lives enjoy a fully cured blunt made with their home-grown tobacco leaf, home-grown sticky bud and stuck together with home-made BHO instead of vegetable gum.. Ahh the finer things in life :) I also collect tobacco seed along with most other seed. I don't really make an effort to grow it, I have golden virginia that I planted years ago and seeded my garden of pot plants. Every year I have tobacco come up wherever I stay. It is a good barrier plant to plant on the windward side of personal ganjah patches for pest control, think of living, outdoor, stinky sticky-strips that you can also smoke! haha I love growing plants that get me high...well done Foomar!!! Show us the way !

Awesome selection you got there. Have you got any pointers to help with the cure which is where it is all at with the 'baccy. I'm still learning and the nitty gritty information is in short supply. Weed has much more information available!
