What once was

I would love to know more about the story behind Thai Power's Iso 2 . A device ahead of it's time. Out of the box, it was a nice little vehicle. With the addition of the "purification kit", it became a honey truck. Simple, effective, safe. With the passage of time, I have come to feel that it was one of the most underrated product I had ever seen. If anyone can tell me anything about the history or people behind it , I would be most appreciative .

A different question, same era , early to mid seventies . Any one here recall a tiny little device sold as the "No toil oil well " . A little attachment device which allowed one to put a one or three gram vial on a standard pipe stem . It was very effective and less than five bucks at the time. Again, I would much like to know the people or story behind the device

There are a lot of really good minds here on ic with old stuff saved up, so hopefully someone can help. The small amount of information on oils in the 70s/80s I've read came from Clarke's "Hashish!", but it seems that much of the history has been lost. I've asked older smokers in my life, but it was nothing any of them came across in the NE.

The ISO-2 was a soxhlet reflux boiler. About 24 ounces of ethanol was poured into the lower chamber and a basket with a coffee filter and about an ounce of bud sat above it. The boiling alcohol condensed in the heat exchanger on the top and rained down through the plant material, collecting the resins in the lower chamber.

The basket of bud was then removed and a collection cup put in its place. After the collection cup had collected the alcohol, the oil was harvested from the bottom.

PS: Soxleting with a polar solvent like alcohol extracts a car load of chlorophyll, so to get a honey colored oil with this type of rig, would require a non polar solvent like naphtha or hexane.

Grey Wolf, your description sounds very little like my experience. In trying to reconcile the two, a couple of thoughts come to mind . One , you might not have been an original purchaser, and were not provided with all the accompanying gear which went with it . Two , the unit which you have has had the soxlet basket modified . The basket was the units sole weak point. I had to modify mine the week I got it . The original basket had a capacity of 4 to 6 ounces. The unit claimed honey oil with nada but isopropyl alcohol (which came supplied with the unit) with the addition of the purification kit - which could be ordered from the back of the manual . No additional solvents were needed. The claim was not false. The darned little thing is the most amazing and versatile machine.
I imagine you already have what it takes to make up the purification kit . I do not have access to my manual at the moment, but should in the near future. I am a little tired right now , but will be happy to describe the simple but effective purification procedure when I next am on.

I've never owned one, just investigated one to see how it worked.

The original I saw was being used with ethanol, and produced a green oil. I threw in the part about using a polar solvent, because some folks ran white gas stove fuel (naphtha) instead of alcohol.

The owner made no mention of a purification procedure or unit, so
I look forward to learning how they did purify a polar extract.

IIRC, the old "Cannabis Alchemy" said to run it through activated carbon to make honey oil...

Thank you for your response. I suppose I should also thank you for your postings. Never seen anything by you which did not reflect decent and positive values. Your efforts to get extracts to those with real need is to be commended. I wish that more of that kind of approach with canna could be a standard.
The content on the purification kit : Activated charcoal, Buchner funnel, 500 ml Erlenmeyer flask with sidearm for vacuum adapter, an aspirator, 3 feet of braided hose, and filter papers. To be supplied by user: a one gallon jar. The procedure itself is just a water wash followed by norit. It was in a nutshell: basic extraction then put the extract back on 33% of the original cannabis. Put it in the gallon jar and add water, shake filter, repeat 3 x allow to dry when done. Extract with iso, filter and dry again. Weigh the extract, match 50 % the weight of the extract with norit. 10 x volume of combined extract and norit for isopropyl. Slurry is fine. Filter and extract for the goods. Once is usually enough. Tedious process, but is safe and effective.

Karma as a cosmic dolt slap? I have many times looked for info on Thai Power Inc, only to draw a blank on a regular basis. I finally post here, and with in hours, I run across that which I had looked for. The man behind Thai Power is the author of Cannabis Alchemy.

Yeah, after water washing it with Petroleum ether, which appears to be a mixure of pentane, hexane, and heptane, and then redissolving in 10 volumes of alcohol. To that he added half the weight of the oil in Norit (activated charcoal), and then filtered it.

Attached is an MSDS for Petroleum Ether, which gives the chemistry, but any of the alkanes in that range will work.

Are you refering to Hoye or Gold?

Sounds similar to Golds procedure, except for the starting with a petroleum ether and water wash part.

I am not sure which is the pen name. What I found, was a digital of the book which was printed well after mine- which makes sense, as I had bought it when it was first out. Here is a cut and paste of what caught my eye.
Appendix A
Letters
D. Gold invented a machine called the Isomerizer,
followed by the Iso II. The following letters were received byThai Power, the manufacturer of the machine.

A link to the site that was cut and pasted from, it was about 35% the way down the page:http://www.scribd.com/doc/50013522/7/Appendix-A

the 2nd half of the book is an advertisement, but some of the descriptions of the red Mexican oils are mouthwatering.

about 15 years ago when i lived in UK, lettuce opium was readilly available, legally in headshops. i tried it several times and i gotto say the ones i tried were fairly mild in effect.

Back in my teens, "lopium" was sold in all the head shops- "mild" may even be an understatement. Infinitely safer than the Spice and bathsalts of today tho'...

We tincture up a bunch of Wild Lettuce every year to use in cough medicine-works pretty well for that.

There are alkaloids in a lot of greens/lettuce that have a sedative effect.

But you can milk latex from various species of greens.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactucarium
Lactucarium is the milky fluid secreted by several species of lettuce, especially Lactuca virosa, usually from the base of the stems. Lactucarium is known as lettuce opium because of its sedative and analgesic properties. It has been reported to promote a mild sensation of euphoria, but Lactuca virosa is poisonous,[1] and at least one fatality has occurred during an attempt to use it for intoxication.[2][3] Because it is a latex, Lactucarium physically resembles opium, in that it is excreted as a white fluid and can be reduced to a thick smokable solid.

Lactuca virosa is not normally toxic in any way- wondering if the death referred to above was due to a mistaken identity.
It's even safe for little kids...
