been here my whole life. 38 yrs. expensive, overcrowded, rough job market, massive traffic, major class segregation, stupid sheeple, awesome beaches, great weather, nice mountains, proximity to everything, improving pot laws, good people, great mixture of cultures, and good fishing. i love it. and i hate it...

Nice weather mostly. Nice pot growing climate. Scary earthquakes. Pretty women (those that haven't bought into the "plastic is fantastic" body mutilation). Nice ocean view.

Nice thread

I have never been to california

the name is pretty unique, there is only one california

when I think of california, I don't think of a promised land

I know there is hollywood, big money, and I know how that can influence the area
(can or could)

I don't like the idea of living in a place where shit is crazy expensive, where people live in luxury (while there are people around the block who don't have food), that sounds like the kind of place to me, I know everywhere can be like that but, the idea we get of california

is that there is a lot of money, and like someone said, plastic fantastic

but I know california was also host to big movements, hippies, and host of a big movement
marijuana and mmj

what you guys have or had going on there, quite unique

I also know california has a lot of prisons, gang bangers, violence

when I think of california... I don't think of mother's arms welcoming me

I think of crazyland

oh and I think of great weather, skateboarding, surf

I don't fancy much the red hot chili papers, but naming an album californication and constantly talking about california (and being aired on the radio) lol, can't help but put them together

a dog eat dog place
where you go to make it or to scrape by, like ny

but the weed situation, quite something

mmj for the sick, everyone should be for it
a movement blessed by god

Born and raised in SoCal. I am torn between Cali and Washington State. I lived in both Los Angeles and Santa Cruz while in Cali. North of Seattle in Washington.

I find the weather and my job are the only things I really like in Cali. I work in TV/Film Post production so I miss that in WA. I do feel that the Cali I grew up in is gone. Cali is broke and dumb. You are not really free here either.

I often think of moving to Northern Cali but am heading back to WA this June to look for property. I am sure I will be moving back soon.

Bottom line is Cali changed for the worse over the last ten years or so. I don't see it getting any better.

Wow I could write a book but ...to be brief Craven summed it up pretty good EXCEPT on improving pot legistlation. IMHO it is limping along which is fine with me I love it the way it is all fudged up....I would also stress EVERYTHING here is more expensive by factors that made my new friend from Georgia pack everything in a U-Haul and move back to Atlanta after spending 6 mos here finding no work and loosing all his savings ....(shrug) I tried to warn him.

Hey 818 I was born in Seattle, but we only lived their my 1st year, been in Cali ever since....I think WA has it shit together a LOT better than Cali does and their real estate values are MUCH better shape than ours and the San Juans (I used to live in Friday Harbor) are just awesome!

all my friends up in WA talk so much shit about living in seattle, and always come down to cali just awestruck...

if you have money cali is a fun place...otherwise its a non stop grind just to pay your living expenses..

they also find ways to tax the shit out of you through excessive law enforcemnt, stop lights with traffic cameras, coddling to illegal immigrants and welfare communities, the list goes on and on...if you do come out here make sure to visit the tenderloin in san francisco its a wonderful place this time of the year.

One man, in my opinion, is the best person to help us understand California--Huell Howser.

Yes, he's gay as a $3 bill, but he's involved, and I love his interviews. I've learned more about my state just watching his series "California's Gold" than by any other means/method. I learned about the area where I live (see my sig) BEFORE I moved here, through his program, than I ever could have just living here.

There are many Californias, too. There are the urban centers of San Diego, greater metro LA (I suppose the OC could be included in that, along with the valley, eh?) and San Fran.

But then we have the deserts, which are peopled by a very different kind of folk as compared to, say, West Hollywood or San Gabriel. We have the coastal region, and each area is different from the other, though they certainly have the very wealthy pockets like La Jolla (pronounced "la HOI-ya", not "la jolla") and Malibu.

The Central Valley and farming regions are completely unlike the farmed/ag regions of SoCal I became so familiar with growing up there since the mid-70s.

And we have the mountain regions, the Sierra Nevada, San Gabriels, and volcanic regions up north, once again completely different from what you'll find in terms of scenery AND people from what most folks think of when they think "California."

I never experienced mountains like these until 2003, and I was AMAYZED. Say it like Huell! "That's amay-zing!"

Unfortunately, he's not a native, he's from Tennessee. There's a charitable organization called The Native Sons (and Daughters) of the Golden West that my father-in-law and husband belong to. My sons and stepson could belong as well. Their cause is helping children with cleft palate.

I do miss boating/fishing the San Juans.

I really am torn between the two sates. I just know Cali isn't ever going to be what it was. It is not a liberal state. I have many more personal freedoms in WA.
