Just "got into" Terence Mckenna where to start of his audio recordings?

just got into him because a friend was speaking disparagingly about him and Graham Hancock, a man who i think is discounted because of his completely outside the box thinking on human history and i wondered if mkenna was a similar character.
i just read Food of the Gods and surprisingly liked it. and i would like to listen to some of his lectures, speeches , presentations as i've heard he's a good public speaker but looking online i'm overwhelmed by the amount of stuff available, is there a greatest hits or something like that? if not is it best to start at the beginning at the earliest recordings and go forward?

also how much did his topics and theories change? if i listen to a 1988 recording how similar will a 1995 recording be

McKenna! the memories :D cool dude, I used to really dig a lot of what he said, nowdays I can disagree with him on a few counts; but on the entheogenic use I still agree.

the transcendental object at the end of time, that recording I still remember, good place to start if you asked me... angels, aliens and archetypes... this is a good source for audio http://deoxy.org/media/McKenna

have fun and always take some stuff with a grain of salt. he gives many references and it is great if one researches them fully.

are you saying someone taking mind expanding herioc doses of the most powerful psychedelic drugs ever, might have a confusing not 100 % true theory or two, in a attempt to make sense of a chaotic trip?:dance013::smoke out:

I'm surprised you didn't ask about his "timewave" theory, which supposedly indicates a HUGE change coming in 2012... But that's whole 'nother thingy...

Personally I don't accept his timewave theory as having any accuracy because he changed it when he realized it wasn't coinciding with real events.

If you want to learn more about his timewave, here's a start:
http://alternativeculture.com/spirit/timewave.htm

I got to see a lecture by him at Ft. Mason in SF once. He was a really fascinating guy, and wrote excellent books.

20 years ahead of his time, at the time, or maybe 30.

His work on the I Ching is what got me excited, but you're into the hallucinogenics, I understand.

He wrote a book on how to grow mushrooms, but there are new and better techniques for growing schrooms now,

We all have to walk our own path so someone else's opinions, ideas and actions can only take us so far. Certainly valuable resources but the heavy lifting usually rests on the individual, as it should.

Start from the beginning. I know it sounds daunting but like eating an elephant, do it one bite at a time.

I enjoy his lectures and writings in the same vein as Hancock, Hoffman, Campbell, et al; It's food for thought. Something to kick start your brain to accept the vantage point of new and unique perspectives.

I would agree with you, however I believe icmag has a policy against allowing the discussion of other drugs... Correct me if I'm wrong, cause I've been gone awhile.

Usually threads about psychedelics get binned as I recall.

yes i agree his timewave zero theory is bullshit so far as i've read it. he places too many dates completely randomly ,if i understand him right on a speech i heard his first calculation placed the date on sometime in 1973 so he just recalculated and coincidentally came up with a new date,

Hrpuffnkush i like your cup analogy and i agree mckenna and others like him have doe that but they then dump your cup into a dirtier jug

I enjoy reading and listening to his stuff

I don't take it all as truth but he definitively states some things that I believe are..

you know the peacock spreads his feathers like that to attract females ?
apparently females are attracted because to her it's a very courageous thing to do,
because it makes him very visible to predators but he still does it anyway

Terence McKenna - Discussion on Cannabis Part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBQCWVAmEik

i decided to try this one and i figure this can be posted no problem, very interesting he apparently liked Lebanese red hash because of it's high quality and it though the plants are usually indica dominate hybrids, they are hybrids and have a nice uplifting, mentally stimulating effect along with the indica stone.

i made extra note of that because i have several northern lebanese hybrids that i consider heavily sativa (in effect at least) dominate strains that appear indica like due to a acclimatization to the areas condition where a tall sativa is less suited. just made me excited to know i'm smoking the same kind of hash and weed as this guy preferred

Actually the interesting part of McKenna's timewave is the novelty curve.

McKenna posits that the timewave portrays the different levels of "novelty" occurring in the world.

So he believed that we are heading for a time where "novelty" is off the charts.

The timewave predicts it will happen in 2012 (after he adjusted it to make it so).

So what does he mean by "novelty"?

Supposedly it's a time when unprecedented things are happening all the time.

So for instance there could be earthquakes larger than any seen in recorded history.

There could be solar storms, like the one we just experienced, but perhaps bigger than any ever seen before.

The could be biological warfare. So far we have experienced nuclear (hiroshima and nagasaki) warfare and chemical warfare (WWI, Kurds in Iraq), but not biological. Most scenarios with weaponized biological warfare paint a grim picture, esp if it's something there's no cure for.

Actually we DID experience the first biological warfare, right in the USA. Anthrax mailed to Senators and media. But nobody dared call it by its name, Biowarfare. Of the domestic type. And I don't for a minute believe the guy they blamed for it (who is now dead), did it. He was just the fall guy. It was all about scaring politicans and America into going to war. Only liberals were sent the anthrax... and it worked. Liberals voted for war. And nobody has been brought to justice for it.

Anyway sorry for the rant... had to get that one out...

So you get the idea of what kinds of novelties might be in store for us... if you can believe Terence McKenna...

the drysift is usually blonde, with a darker tint when it's more oily, but everything else is reddish brownish green

evolution has no direction the peacock does'nt mean to do anything to get chicks, just like you don't purposely spray pheromones
