Ahh, so you have to drink right? There seem to be a lot of water purifiers out there today, but before you choose I would recommend thoroughly reading reviews. I can't tell you how many water purifiers I looked up that people were relying on out in the jungle/bush that did not work at all, broke because it had too many operating parts, or only worked a couple of times because the filter would clog up.

I never have used this device, but I will be ordering it soon. It appears if you haven't heard of Katadyn purifiers for expeditions you have not researched enough. This company has been around forever and appears to have the simplest, most reliable, and time tested water filter on the market. Just watch the videos of different water filters and then watch the one for this one...

Water treatment products are in high demand for outdoor enthusiasts, international travelers, and relief agencies. Few are better for long-lasting continuous use, however, than the Katadyn Pocket water microfilter. Made of heavy-duty materials, the Pocket features a silver-impregnated ceramic element that's effective against bacteria and protozoa even in extreme conditions. Unlike disposable filters, the ceramic element can be cleaned several times, even in the field. More importantly, the element filters all microorganisms larger than 0.2 microns (0.0002mm), producing clear, drinkable water no matter where in the world you are. The pump also includes an improved, round pump handle for better ergonomics and an outlet hose that attaches to water containers with a single clip.

The Pocket hails from Katadyn's Endurance series, a high-quality line of filters that produce up to 100 times more water than standard water filters. The Pocket is so tough, in fact, that it's the first choice for extreme adventurers like Mike Horn. Plus, it's the only water filter with a 20-year warranty. Other features include a measuring gauge that indicates when you should change the filtering element, a cushioned base that makes it easy to pump on all surfaces, a prefilter, and a carrying bag.

Why Water Filtration Is Important
The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes 80 percent of all travel diseases to contaminated drinking water. Drinking water contains three groups of pathogenic microorganisms: viruses, such as hepatitis A, Norwalk virus, or poliovirus; bacteria, like e-coli, salmonella, and cholera; and protozoans, such as giardia and cryptosporidium. Tap water and ice cubes are usually the culprits when traveling, but even bottled water can be questionable. The backcountry is also a source of waterborne illness. A pristine stream may be safe one day and contaminated the next, as microorganisms stemming from human and animal waste are typically spread by rain and runoff. As a result, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends treating water from every source in the backcountry.

Specifications:

Usage: 1 to 4 people
Capacity: 13,000 gallons
Dimensions: 2.4 by 10 inches
Output: 1 quart per minute
Technology: 0.2-micron ceramic depth filter (cleanable)
Weight: 20 ounces

About Katadyn
The Switzerland-based Katadyn has been producing high-quality portable water systems since 1928. Katadyn products are used by militaries, health organizations, and outdoor adventurers worldwide, making it the global leader in portable water treatment. With subsidiaries in the U.S., Germany, France, and Singapore, Katadyn products are used wherever safe drinking water isn't available, whether for travel, camping, or humanitarian applications.

Product Description
The most rugged, longest lasting microfilter available. Chosen by the U.S. military and expeditions due to it's extreme durability and dependability. For those who want the best.

So many good reliable reviews on this one that I had to choose it. From veterans, archaeologists, to nature expedition extraordinaire's all recommend this from first hand experience. There are plenty of videos online of it being used. It is small compact and has few operating parts which means it is way less likely to break. Quite few other devices just as expensive had so many complaints about parts breaking...Careful what you select.

There are also cool pens that you stick into water for a few minutes and they kill all the microbes and while I liked these contraptions I did not like the fact they relied on an energy supply (regardless of the solar rechargeable capabilities) and I simply woudl not trust using just it regardless of what the manufacturer and other people espouse I would only use it in conjunction with the Katadyn for complete relief of worrying about what you are drinking.

I found the most crucial thing in these sorts of expeditions is clean water because dirty water can literally have you keeled over in a tent for 20 days. Screw ice cubes and untreated water. i would also be extremely cautious and not use it in the view other with the exception of your guide. Remember this is something that is absolutely priceless to many in countries with no water so instead of getting robbed use it discretely and if you want to give it away at the end of the trip I am quite sure the guide would be indefinitely loyal to you should you ever wish to return...

But why not just use the time tested pills and liquid purifiers that are extremely cheap and have been around forever? Everyone says they taste terrible. The water is much better tasting from a handheld purifier and it actually has a filter on it unlike the pens and the pills. You can literally throw it in a swamp and start pumping fresh water and it pumps pretty damn quick, I was amazed from the live videos.

BTW...

You NEVER ask for seeds... just for weed (insert name) and pray that you get the real thing and find viable seeds.

Smoke it and if the high is killer so the seeds.

Just common sense.

Go to Pakistan and get some of that Kush that was growing a long side Ben Ladin's hide out. I can just see it now, Ben Ladin Kush lol

I bet Iran is sitting on some sweet herbs, untainted by westerners at that. You know they aren't smoking Dutch in Iran. That's the shit jesus was smoking.

Haha yea that may not go over so well for marketing lol...Maybe if the plants you took seeds from were fertilized with his blood and meant to be burned as a negative effigy upon finishing flowering heh. GL surviving Pakistan for more than a day or two before you are kidnapped and beheaded cuz your white Irish ass just don't fit.

I do keep hearing Iran, but with the government running around threatening to blow up entire populations of countries, the beheading of tourists, the jailing of tourists, the stoning of foreigners, the mass murder of their own people, and 90+ kids stoned to death with cinder blocks the other day in neighboring Iraq for dressing like an emo kid I think I will pass on Islamic states.

No validity to safety for foreign tourists in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran? Joking right?

Real peaceful and welcoming? Is the translation fake? Love the videos of his thoughts on gay rights. The country is a leader of diversity and freedom, right?

I take it you recommend a white t-shirt khaki shorts only for going into a jungle hah? I am guessing since you seem to think every media is corrupt and lying about the state of certain countries that all the guide sites are lies too. Funny seeing as how every guided tourist company and traveler whose actually done it would disagree...Is the tent an extra that could be left? Certainly, most people recommend a simple duffel bag back pack and few changes of clothes as well as the basic necessities for being in the bush...Anyways moving onto topic at hand without burying my head in the sand to the obvious state of many countries...If other people want to travel to war-zones like Mexico and and many of the Islamic states have fun...Look forward to your wonderful stories of how well your treated when you get back.

P.S. since your obviously so well traveled do share your in-depth knowledge :D

Speaking of fire starters....

This is another absolute necessity on many safari sites. Simplicity is key here.

picture.php

The StrikeForce fire starter by Ultimate Survival Technologies is an exceptional all-weather system for backcountry travelers.

Scrape the hardened steel striker down the alloy flint bar for a spark that is three times as hot as a standard match
Weighing in at less than 4 oz., the StrikeForce stows easily on every adventure

Made in USA.

Item 775077

You can buy the little yarn/woodchip fire starter balls to help you get a fire started. I recommend these to have, but not be dependent on. You should learn how to start your own fire's with things that will be around you where you are traveling to. You are most likely going to be in the bush for weeks...Learn to do it your self. This is the easiest and most widely recommended tool for starting fires. I already have one of these and they work great. It's cheap and lite so bring two.

Pretty much any place that Arjan and the Greenhouse Seeds crew haven't been to...

But if they can survive there isn't that a good sign, lol? I was thinkin damn my ego was destroyed a couple sheets of acid ago so if they lived through it how the hell could I end up stiff in a river with a croc munching on me for pissin off natives? Honestly, they were rather inspirational in my coming to the decision that traveling abroad is not such a big deal and having visited several travel blogs I feel even more confident...They couldn't even get the hippies right in California with all their beans, t-shirts, and lanyards they tried to SELL them, heh. With that said I did find their video trips inspiring and I truly hope they do something good for cannabis industry with their expeditions and I do wish them much success on a noble cause regardless whoever is doing it.

Ah Pakistan.
It's a magical place.
The water is safe - the brown color is vitamins.
They're especially friendly if you remember to bring Muhammed portrait t-shirts with you to hand out.
Chat up as many chicks as you can too. Remember, they're shy, so be persistent - Don't take no for an answer.

Here's a photo from a pro-American square dance I visited. If you see people like this you are supposed to join arms with them and spin around in circles singing "Obama love you".

Yunnan province, China
New Caledonia??

Ahh Yunnan, China! That's a good one and I considered until I looked up the drug laws. I was a little worried about getting caught in China, because their drug laws are very strict, but it seems like one of the better places to go in Asia for land races. I thought about Indonesia too, but being an Islamist state it has a severe death penalty for MJ and all narcotics.

http://www.ecodccu.org/English/Model%20Legislation/anti_narcotic_drugs_law_of_iran.htm

The Anti Narcotic Drugs Law of Iran

Article 1

The following acts are considered as crimes and the perpetrator shall be sentenced to the punishments prescribed hereunder.

1- Cultivating poppies, absolutely, and cannabis for the purpose of production of narcotics.

2- Importing, exporting and producing any kind of narcotics.

3- Keeping, carrying, purchasing, distributing and selling narcotic drugs.

4- Setting up or running places for the use of drugs.

5- Using drugs in any form or manner except for cases provided for by law.

6- Causing to escape or giving protection to drug offenders and perpetrators who are under prosecution or have been arrested.

7- Destroying or concealing evidence of offenders' crimes.

Article 2

Anybody who cultivates poppies or cannabis for the purpose of producing narcotic drugs shall be sentenced, in addition to his crop being destroyed, to the following punishments for each time according to the amount of his cultivation:

1- The first time, a fine in an amount up to ten million rials in cash.

2- Second time, a fine in the amount of five to fifty million rials in cash, plus 30 to 70 lashes.

3- Third time, a fine in the amount of ten to one hundred million rials in cash, plus 1 to 70 lashes together with two to five years of imprisonment.

4- Fourth time, death penalty.

Note In the event that it is proved that cultivation of poppy or cannabis has taken place under the instruction of the landlord(s) or the tenant or their legal Deputies, the instructor who was the cause (of the crime), if he is in a higher position than the agent, shall be sentenced to the punishments prescribed in this Article, and the agent who took the charge of cultivation shall be condemned to a fine in the amount of one to three million rials in cash and fifteen to forty lashes.

Article 3

Anybody who stores, conceals, carries the seeds or capsules of poppy or flowering or fruiting top of cannabis shall be sentenced to a fine in the amount of one hundred thousand to three million rials in cash as well as to one to seventy lashes.

In the case of flowering or fruiting top of cannabis the intention of producing narcotics from them must be established.

Seventy lashes in Iran doesn't sound too bad just some disfigurement of your back, but I do wonder if they can do more to you than the law requires. I am not to up to date with Iranian law so for those interested in going there it would be interesting to see what you drum up as punishment.

Indonesia is a no go as with many of its associated islands for me. It is a minimum 20 years for anything cannabis related and a death sentence for any trafficking.

http://goseasia.about.com/od/travelplanning/a/seasia_drugs.htm

What their embassy has to say:
http://www.china-embassy.org/eng/zt/mzpkz/t36387.htm
China defends executing drug traffickers:

http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle-old/347/china.shtml

It is dangerous anywhere, but most certainly more dangerous in some places than others. Just something some of you may want to keep in mind if you ever seriously venture out. Some countries drug laws make the U.S. look like child's play. I think it is very important to keep not only the countries current social situation in mind, but also their legislation.

Mexico, 'cause I know it very well and have family there. I would also hit the Nepal area.

R.Fortune

Man, do I wish I had family there ;\ Friggin awesome, have you actually tried to go or anything or biding your time until life has a little more normalcy in those parts? To be honest Mexico is my number one place I want to go, it's just the current state of things as I have said earlier. Hopefully peace will return sooner rather than later. I wonder what regions are best there any ideas?

Ojo recommended there too, maybe he's got some regional ideas.

Not sure of landraces though the cartels prolly get the beans from the Bou....

I used to bring my own stash pre 9/11 and the locals flipped over the stuff.
Ive gave away many beans to my friends down there over the years.

I would like to go to many of these places but under the condition my health and freedom will not be harmed(not gonna happen). The Islamic law used to be cannabis and opium was ok and alcohol was not. Pretty sure about that. They tried to outlaw coffee and finally gave up on that.

Huh? Tried to outlaw coffee? Can you cite a source for that info? Some of the best coffee in the world comes from Islamic regions. Yemen, Ethiopia and Sudan are major producers of "Arabica" coffee beans.
