First marijuana seller convicted under U.S. federal law.

On the day the Marijuana Tax Stamp Act was enacted -- Oct. 2, 1937 -- the FBI and Denver, Colo., police raided the Lexington Hotel and arrested Samuel R. Caldwell, 58, an unemployed labourer and Moses Baca, 26. On Oct. 5, Caldwell went into the history trivia books as the first marijuana seller convicted under U.S. federal law. His customer, Baca, was found guilty of possession.

Caldwell's wares, two marijuana cigarettes, deeply offended Judge Foster Symes, who said: "I consider marijuana the worst of all narcotics, far worse than the use of morphine or cocaine. Under its influence men become beasts. Marijuana destroys life itself. I have no sympathy with those who sell this weed. The government is going to enforce this new law to the letter."

Caldwell was sentenced to four years of hard labour in Leavenworth Penitentiary, plus a $1,000 fine. Baca received 18 months incarceration. Both men served every day of their sentence. A year after Caldwell was released from prison, he died.

hopefully, this evil being Foster Symes has been rewarded accordingly for his deeds in this life.

Good thing they nipped the marijuana thing in the bud.

you know one thing that's been brought up before

is all the humor associated with marijuana in the news

like for exemple : everything goes to pot, canada goes to pot

the media has a way of taking things not seriously with weed, mocking the subject

I think cracking up jokes about this case is not appropriate (imho)

guy went for 4 years, and died after coming out of the pen

guy has this innocent farmer look on his face

I dunno to me, it's a scandal

honestly we should expect some pot smokers/growers to start shooting up people

treat good people like criminals, your sure to breed a few crazies

Think of all the lives ruined by Henry J. Anslinger's lies and fabrications and William Randolph Hearst's propaganda. One to make a political name for himself and one to protect his interests.

Henry lived well into his eighties, however he died blind and with a hugely enlarged prostate.

there was undoubtedly a new hell created for the beasts that came up with the drugwar.

and all who support it.

and if not, damn it , thats the first thing i will create in the afterlife.

anyone looking for cozy torture jobs in the afterlife? (i wont have dental, but i will provide free pitchforks (dipped in chili and salt))

though i cant actually imagine monsters like that having a good life.

henry anslinger should have died of diarrhea. (in between being raped by genetically "enhanced" gorillas.)

lol,...

generally i feel empathy for people hurting (my tears are dried up though)

but at the thought of anslinger and his ilk being raped to death

i cant help but laugh.
