I too have received a counterfeit $20. from a bank...I naively took it back to the bank I had received it from...
They of course took the bill, but didn't give me a real one in exchange...
I 'ate' the fake and got a visit from the Secret Service a week later!

This discussion does make me wonder, how many fake bills have passed through my hands without my noticing, spending it unknowingly? 
Thankfully this was a number of years ago, I was just a kid and wasn't growing yet;
but I was an "outlaw med user", in very unfriendly territory, so it still gave me quite a scare!
I got a knock at the door, he identified himself, and asked about the bill I found/turned in at the bank;
I explained that I noticed the bill after cashing a check, and thankfully that was the end of it.
However, were this to happen again, I think I'd handle it a bit differently...
I think I'd probably burn the fake bill or something, and just take the loss, since it'll be your loss regardless...
Well, unless one were to knowingly "spend" the fake; but that's just not my style...not to mention that it seems kinda silly, to put yourself at risk over $20-100.

Back when I was making fortunes for other people, I was passed $1k in fake $20s in a dark Safeway parking lot. Some guy we'll call "Ray".
I got home and noticed it, and about had a heart attack. Just got nicked for a QP.
Not 5 minutes goes by, and my phone rings, and another buddy is telling me that Ray is trying to sell him a QP for $1k. I told him what happened, and he agreed to use the fake $20's to buy my weed back from Ray.
It went off without a hitch, he does the deal behind a bar downtown in low light conditions, I get my weed back and Ray is stuck again with his fake bills.
About a week later, I was walking downtown and saw Ray sporting a ton of different bags from the mall, clothes and shoes and video games. I knew he'd been busy passing the fake bills...
I probably should stop there cuz I don't want to sound like a total thug*, but it did get even crazier.

this lady came in the other day and tried to buy a $4 item with a $100 bill. Right off the bat i knew the bill was bad, first off it was like the size of monopoly money lol, and second it felt like regular paper, it was horrible. I was looking for my counterfeit pen and i guess she figured that out, snatched the bill off the counter and ran out the store.
Anyone ever try scanning/printing a bill, i tried it before(back in my junkie days) and when it printed it came out saying something about fighting counterfeit bills and gave me the link to some website.

I was given 3K in fake money once. I thought it felt a little off, but it was from someone who I trusted. I brought it home, checked all the watermarks, even used the pen on it, and all seemed fine.
A few days later I went to meet my dude, and handed him that 3 with about another 20 . Anyways, he calls me in a few hours telling me that HIS guy knew the bills were fake, as he had gotten them before.
They were all 50s, and the way he could tell they were fake was because one of the dots in the middle of the 5 in the corner was missing. Shit was fucking nuts. All turned out well, did not take the loss as it all got sorted out. Crazy thing is I kept one of them, and left it in my pocket one day when I did wash. When it came out, the bill had peeled apart. EAch side was a different piece of like paper with plastic on the inside. It was fucking really weird. Definitely some high tech shit.

I know a guy that is in jail right now for ten years for passing fake 5 dollar bills. He is a bright one that just cannot stay out of jail. It is like he has to be in jail or something and keeps coming up with newer and more creative ways to get there.

yeah its automatic built into the scanner firmware. if you scan money it gives you that message and the bills will have watermarks added to them so they can be traced back to the machine.

The only solution to end fake money is to go to a cashless society. We are almost there. Once that happens every transaction you make will be under the scope of big brother. Only legit transactions will be allowed. If you owe someone something it will automatically be removed from your account.
