Once You Go Organic You CAN'T Go Back

I don't know if I would say I had real problems, I guess it was more me being used to focus on my nutes, my ph, my ec, my ppm etc. Not having to do that freaked me out I guess lol. I just am used to what I do and want to make the full change finally.

I am doing that as we speak and I have the organics for beginners in my favorites. I already learned to NOT use perlite and inturn use DE which I have on its way.

Great resource here!

Hey Medmaker,

I had a question for the organic guys regarding DE if you don't mind. :)

Can you overdose your plants on DE??

I basically top dress it through a sieve to get even coverage on top of the soil for the first few weeks after i mix it to stop the dreaded fungas gnat larvae from hatching. It does seem to work very well but i end up using probably around 1-2 teaspoons per 5 gallon bag.. And this gets replaced every 3-5 days after every watering. Now thats alot of DE! I understand the other way to use DE is just to premix it in with your soil batches.. Ive never done it this way can anyone give some feedback on these matters?..

I have to say ive never noticed any adverse effects on any of my plants from using DE in what seems large quantites..

Also one tip for using DE, if your sprinkling it on the top for pest control make sure the soil is not really wet when you apply because wet DE does not work very well. :) Usually i just wait a few hours after watering to reapply DE.

Sorry for thread derail!

if you keep it up for too long, you'll eventually get problems.

a possible approach might be to change the conditions that lead to gnats

also, there are nematodes you can buy. They enter via the larva's mouth, and eat from the inside. If a male and female meet, they make babies and you don't need to reapply.

It's like you are really growing something, and not force feeding the plants with cockmeat sandwiches  hahaha

It's also good for the environment ;)

Hi!

I get your point about the plants being more in control and understand that the idea of microlife taking care of your plants can give you a warm feeling inside you :) I too have grown several plants in premixed soil without much bottled nutes, although I've used molasses every soilgrow.

But the myth about it being good for the enviroment.. And I don't mean to start a fight or anything but since a lot of you organic growers are infact using guano I feel I must say something before this becomes another organic circle jerk. And don't get me wrong, I love organic circle jerks! :D

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=90013

There's plenty more to be found on the subject by googling a bit.

This is one of the few companies that actually addresses this problem:
http://www.archipelagobatguano.com/

So the point I'm trying to make is what this wise man already said in the other topic

Wait...What? said:
Organic and Sustainable are two completely different things and one does not imply the other.

I'm currently getting into hydro too, with my organic plants on the side. It's just so much of a hassle to get everything you need around here and I don't feel like ordering worm castings from another country. Time will tell which one will be more sustainable for me :D

BTW In hydro I feed with 1,5ml / litre floranova bloom and nothing else. A bit of Liquid Silicon as pH up when needed, but really my system is stable and cheap as hell. I haven't even used my pH pens for weeks and I only check the EC when changing the res. Of course this is just me and my opinions but the point is you CAN go organic and go back :D

good thing for you, you aren't trying to start a fight.

guano? dude, I get my N from lightning. Pure, unadulterated lightning.

mess with me, you mess with N.

mess with N, and BAM! you just messed with LIGHTNING bro!

Haha! Oh yeah I forgot to mention I was talking about BAT guano, I haven't studied seabird guano much.

I don't know If I understood your first sentence correctly, there's a bit of a language barrier here when it comes to sarcasm(?).

I hope there's still room for me in the circle if I decide to go organic all the way someday :D Looks like madlibrettist just finished, there's an opening!

any suggestions on being able to accomplish this but on a perpetual schedule in any fashion? Leave roots in and repot near it? Just wondering how a perpetual style bed grow might work out IF even possible.

Just leave the roots and re-plant.

The two pictures below were taken an hour apart - and I'm now on my 4th consecutive crop harvesting and re-planting on the same day without any tilling.

Looks like I was too late, there he goes again.. The circle has closed

Mad runs a clover mulch and gets his N from the atmosphere as a result (nitrogen fixation).

I feel like guano, blood, and bone meal are a old school ingredients. They definitely are not being used as much as they were say 5 years ago. I still use guano because I still have some, but when it runs out I'm not going to be purchasing anymore. Alfalfa meal is $10 for 50lbs and works just as well as the N guano. Better yet, I'm going to plant a patch of nettles to use for plant meal when it warms up. Fish bone meal will replace P guano at half the price (assuming I can find it locally).

Pinecone, great words and now I wasn't wanting to buy the guano. I was in hopes of having bats ON my property as in free. I want everything from my property or CLOSE by because I do agree on sustainability of things BUT organic or natural. Now vegan versus this or that? I am still working through. I am actually still getting off the chem nutes SO one at a time.

I agree on the meals versus others and will research that as well. Anything that I can take shit out of and put something ELSE in, I'm all for lol. Organic or not, I am fine NOT smoking or eating shit.

With respect to the guano, I was simply responding to Teddy's critique. Obviously if you are harvesting out of your own bat roost, his critique does not apply. I eat meat and it doesn't bother me to use animal products per se.

I have no problem using animals, my thing is looking into things OTHER THAN shit itself if possible. I have no problem eating or using resources we were provided with including animals.

I will always be working in a aquaponics water source as well to test once setup as well. Odds are that will be a solid source of decent poo and other goo lol.

I just want to keep testing things, see what the end flavors are and go from there. Until you try, you never know you know.

sidenote

I tried giving one of my buddies my nutes but went into TOO MUCH as to why I am switching and now he wants to switch and unload HIS NUTES haha. damn it... should have gave him the nutes and moved on BUT hell I just helped someone else get off the chems so that is a plus in my book.
